Drive thump Rome
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Red Sox No. 24 Prospect Nazzan Zanetello launched two home runs and Antonio Anderson added a three-run blast of his own as the Greenville Drive powered past the Rome Emperors, 7–3, in the opener of a six-game series Tuesday night at Fluor Field. With the win, Greenville (26–26) pulled even with Rome (26–26) in the South Atlantic League South Division standings. Antonio Anderson and Zanetello went back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first and the Drive never looked back. Zanetello homered each of his first two at-bats — a solo shot to left-center in the first inning and another solo blast to left in the third — giving him four on the season. Anderson's homer, his second of the year, came earlier in the first inning with two men on, capping a four-run opening frame that set the tone for the night. Greenville's starter Adam Smith was sharp, tossing five innings of one-hit ball while allowing two runs in the fifth. The Emperors broke through with sacrifice flies from Ambioris Tavarez and a groundout from Bryson Horne, trimming the lead to 5–2, but they would get no closer. The Drive added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Red Sox No. 3 Prospect Franklin Arias singled home Andy Lugo as part of his 2 hit performance to extend the 2nd longest hitting streak in the Minor Leagues – at any level- in the seventh. Arias has recorded a hit in 13 straight contests; only 4 games shy of the active streak leader from the Rockies AAA squad. An inning later, Arias lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Brooks Brannon and make it 7–2. Rome's E.J. Exposito homered with two outs in the ninth off Jonathan Brand to briefly cut the deficit to 7–3, but Brand closed the door with a strikeout of Horne to seal the victory. Arias went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk and also stole two bases. Lugo added a double, walk, and a run scored. Zanetello drove in two and scored twice, while Anderson finished 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a walk. The Drive pitching trio of Smith, Darvin Garcia, and Brand combined to hold Rome to just four hits. Smith (4.73 ERA) earned the win, Garcia allowed one hit over two scoreless innings of relief, and Brand gave up the ninth-inning homer but finished the final two frames. Rome starter Herick Hernandez (6.07 ERA) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over 4.2 innings, including all three Greenville home runs. The Drive and Emperors resume their series Wednesday night at Fluor Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CHRB Food Fight? California's Top Horse Racing Regulators Clash After Humboldt County Fair Dates Request Is Denied
Guy Fieri tried, but even the Food Network star of 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' couldn't save horse racing in his small northern California hometown of Ferndale, the site of the Humboldt County Fair since 1896. Racing has been a mainstay of the fair most of the years since, but that is coming to an end in 2025. On Thursday, for the second month in a row, the California Horse Racing Board voted against approval of the Humboldt County Fair's dates request for three consecutive weekends of racing between Aug. 13 and Sept. 1. The regularly scheduled meeting was held in Sacramento at the California Exposition and State Fair Grandstand. Technically, the April vote, 3-2 against granting the dates, meant no action was taken by the board because a majority of four of the seven CHRB seats is required. One commissioner, Damascus Castellanos was absent from the April meeting, and one board seat was open because of the resignation of John Carvelli in February. Thursday's vote was 4-3 against the request, with chairman Dr. Gregory Ferraro and commissioners Dennis Alfieri, Thomas Hudnut and Castellanos voting no. Voting in favor of the Humboldt County Fair dates request was vice chairman Oscar Gonzales, along with commissioners Brenda Davis and Peter Stern. Stern was recently appointed to fill the vacant CHRB seat by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The vote came after presentations by representatives of the Humboldt County Fair, recognition that a number of local, state and Congressional politicians had written to the CHRB in support of approving a race meet in Ferndale, and pleadings from owners, breeders, trainers and track employees who said a meet would be beneficial to California racing and breeding. One speaker read a letter from the well-known television star Fieri, who annually attends the fair and whose food career was launched as a teenager with a pretzel cart on the fair grounds. In pleading for approval of the dates, Fieri wrote in his letter, 'To put it very bluntly, taking this meet away from Ferndale would be a bullet to the heart of the fair community. There's no other way to say it.' Speaking against the request for dates was Bill Nader, president and CEO of Thoroughbred Owners of California. Nader outlined the disastrous results of the short-lived Golden State Racing meet at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton last year, which the CHRB approved over TOC protests. That meet, Nader said, required a bailout from Southern California interests and caused severe financial losses to the California Authority of Racing Fairs, which had previously operated fair meets throughout Northern California. CARF ended up selling equipment needed to operate a race meet to a track in Wyoming and has refocused its business on helping Northern California fairs operate their off-track betting facilities. "We need to be very careful with how we govern and how we go forward to protect and preserve California racing," Nader told the CHRB commissioners. The denial of the Humboldt County Fair dates mean there will be no Northern California racing this summer. Since Belinda Stronach, owner of Golden Gate Fields, closed the Bay Area track in June 2024, the only racing was the short-lived Golden State meet from mid-October through mid-December. The CHRB last month voted 4-1 against a request by newly formed Bernal Park Racing to conduct a June 10-July 6 meet at the Alameda County Fair. Bernal Park Racing, an entity started by owner-breeders George Schmitt and John Harris, was set to operate the Ferndale meet if the dates had been approved. Schmitt spoke at the meeting and said he and Harris deposited $1.5 million to help fund the Humboldt County Fair meet and had spent over $100,000 so far on fees and other fairs have applied for 2025 dates. After the dates request was voted down, vice chairman Gonzales, who has clashed with chairman Ferraro in past meetings and was particularly critical of him over the Ferndale vote in April, called it a 'serious, serious, serious mistake that this board made." Gonzales asked the CHRB's executive director, Scott Chaney, the logistics of calling for a follow-up meeting to address the request again. "Commissioner Gonzales, how many votes do you want to have on this?' Ferraro asked. 'You've lost twice. Do you not accept the vote?' 'I don't. I don't, Mr. Chairman,' Gonzales responded. 'Well, that's your problem. That's not the problem of the board,' Ferraro answered back. As chairman, Ferraro can veto calls for a special or emergency meeting and said he would do so if Gonzales tried to have one scheduled. Later, during a public comment period, Gonzales irked Ferraro again, complaining about a back-and-forth between Ferraro and a member of the public. 'Are you being particularly rude today," Ferraro asked, "or do you just have a problem?' The meeting was then adjourned. If Fieri was there to serve lunch, a food fight might have broken out between California's top two horse racing regulators.

Tourists top Drive in 10
GREENVILLE, SC – Bringing hot bats to Fluor Field on Friday night, the Asheville Tourists overpowered the Greenville Drive in a 15-13 shootout. The Tourists (11-14) scored in seven of the 10 innings played and tallied four multi-run frames. While the Drive (11-14) made two separate comebacks throughout the night, Asheville kept its foot on the gas to overcome the adversity. Cristian Gonzalez and Alejandro Nunez each brought runs home in the first and third innings. Up 2-1 in the fourth, Garret Guillemette deposited a ball well past the right field wall to extend the lead. Righty Dawil Almonte made his High-A debut, filling in for starter Nick Swiney. Entering in the third frame, Almonte surrendered an inherited runner, before allowing five to score (four earned) in the fourth as the Drive jumped ahead 6-5. Firing back in the fifth and sixth innings, the Tourists found two more pairs to add to the scoreboard, while getting a solid performance from Matthew Linskey on the bump. The 6-foot 7-inch righty threw in three scoreless innings while racking up four strikeouts. Tying the game at six, Drew Vogel hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Then, Trevor Austin singled up the gut to regain the edge. Chase Jaworsky made it a 9-6 game with a two-RBI base knock to right. In the eighth inning, Nunez homered for the fourth time this year with a blast to right center field. With the game seemingly out of reach, Greenville struck gold and scored four more off a trio of hits and two walks in the eighth inning to tie the game late. No one scored in the ninth inning, and the game continued on into the 10th frame. Dishing out one final heap of runs, Asheville registered five more to jump ahead and seal the deal. Nunez cut the knot with a sacrifice fly to left field, making it 11-10. Two batters later, Gonzalez also scored another on a fly out. The dagger came from Kenni Gomez who, as the third Tourists of the game, hit a mammoth shot over the right field wall to plate three. Not going down easy, Greenville found the board for three in the home 10th, but they didn't have enough juice left. Closing the game with the tying run at the plate, Julio Rodriguez (W, 1-0) slammed the door four hours and two minutes after the first pitch for the win. Asheville scored its most runs in a game this season off 13 hits. Nunez led the team with three knocks, while he and Gomez each nabbed a trio of RBIs. Bush, Jaworsky and Guillemette also had multi-hit affairs. Both teams will battle once again tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. ET. Asheville has taken a three-games-to-two lead in the series, and looks to win it with more good offense Saturday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
