Jack triumphs for Louth's Tredagh Academy in Manchester Box Cup
This renowned event attracted elite talent from across Europe and the UK, with finals day broadcast live on Sky Sports, underlining the high calibre of competition.
Three boxers from Tredagh participated and delivered outstanding performances across multiple weight classes.
Darragh Smyth competed in the U18 category and faced a formidable opponent from St Mary's BC, Dublin, in the semi-final. Despite entering the ring with significantly less experience than the current Dublin champion, Darragh delivered a composed and courageous performance over three fiercely contested rounds.
The bout was a technical and tactical battle, with both boys landing some heavy shots, but the decision was a narrow split in favour of the Dublin boxer.
While the result did not go his way, Darragh showcased immense skill and determination, earning the respect of spectators and coaches alike, while his opponent went on to win the final with a first-round stoppage.
Patrick Lavery faced a strong English champion in the Senior Heavyweight semi-final. After an evenly contested first two rounds, Patrick elevated his performance in the final round, landing powerful backhand crosses and lead hooks.
However, the bout ended in another razor-thin split decision in favour of the English boxer.
Patrick's opponent would go on to win the final, further underlining the quality of Patrick's showing.
Jack Newman's tournament began with a semi-final match-up against a southpaw from England.
This contest was halted midway through the first round due to a medical retirement by his opponent, following several powerful exchanges where Jack demonstrated his signature punching power.

In the final, Jack faced Cian Heaney of Celtic Eagles Boxing Club, Galway, who had defeated the local English champion in his semi-final.
The decider proved to be an electrifying encounter between two top-tier athletes.
From the opening bell Heaney pressed forward aggressively, only to be met with Jack's effective jab and pinpoint backhand counters. Despite an elbow to the back of the head resulting in an unexpected standing count against Jack, he recovered with poise and intensified his assault, exchanging heavy blows in a thrilling round.
Round two saw Jack dominate with accurate, high-tempo combinations, constantly breaking the Galway man's rhythm.
In the final round, both fighters traded in close quarters, but Jack's superior technique and fitness allowed him to edge the exchanges convincingly.
The Galway man also had some successes with his hard-hitting backhand in what was a truly epic battle, but ultimately the judges awarded Jack Newman a unanimous decision victory, crowning him Manchester International Box Cup Senior 80kg champion.
Tredagh Boxing Academy commends all three of their fighters for their discipline, sportsmanship and exceptional efforts.
Special thanks are extended to the families and supporters who travelled with the team, providing unwavering encouragement throughout the tournament.
Notably, all three boxers returned to training the day after arriving home – testament to their commitment and hunger for continued success.
The Tredagh junior team are in action next in July when 15 young guns travel to Manchester for the Junior International Box Cup to gain further international experience.
Tredagh Boxing Academy are always looking to recruit new talent and have classes for seven-year-olds right up to Senior level. Call 087-9944799 for further details.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson signs deal to buy John Textor's shares in Crystal Palace
Woody Johnson has agreed a deal to buy John Textor's stake in Crystal Palace, with a sale to the New York Jets owner likely to be ratified by the Premier League within four weeks. In a move that could be a major boost to Palace's hopes of playing in next season's Europa League, it is understood that Johnson's offer of £190m for Textor's 44.9% stake was signed on Sunday evening in the US. The 78-year-old, who has owned the Jets since 2000 and missed out on buying Chelsea in 2022 after making a $2bn offer, mustpass the Premier League's owners' and directors' test before he can complete the purchase. But it is understood that with Palace under pressure from Uefa to comply with its regulations on multi club ownership, the league is expected to act swiftly to aid their cause. A decision on the FA Cup winners' participation in the Europa League is due this week, although it is believed this latest development will be looked on favourably by Uefa. Textor has come under increasing pressure from Palace's chair, Steve Parish, and the other co-owners – Textor's fellow Americans Josh Harris and David Blitzer – to complete the sale as quickly as possible. The four Palace co-owners were part of the delegation that attended a meeting at Uefa's headquarters in Nyon this month and argued that Textor, the majority shareholder in the French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League, does not have a decisive influence at Selhurst Park despite being the largest shareholder. It is expected that Johnson's arrival should clear the way for Oliver Glasner's side to take their place in the league stage. It remains to be seen whether the former US ambassador to the UK, who has made no secret of his desire to buy an English football club, has his sights on a full takeover. Harris and Blitzer, who bought stakes worth a combined 36% in 2015 and have portfolios of investments across a number of sports, are believed to be willing to sell, owing to concerns about the ballooning costs of building a new main stand, which some sources are predicting could reach up to £240m. Textor, who failed with an audacious attempt at a takeover of Palace in May in a last-ditch attempt to assume control, is understood to have been reluctant to leave the club in which he has invested about £180m since buying a 40% stake for almost £90m in August 2021. Yet he had a major falling-out with Parish, who owns just over 10% but is the executive chair of the managing company that is in charge of Palace and retains the casting vote, over resistance to embracing his Eagle Football network that also includes the South American champions Botafogo and the Belgian side Daring Brussels. Textor is expected to turn his attention to another English club. The former Palace owner Simon Jordan revealed last week that he recommended to Textor buying the Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, who were last week hit with a ban on transfer spending until 2027 last week for the repeated failure to pay players' wages. 'I was talking to John Textor the other day, and if he comes out of Palace, I was saying to him that is the football club you should be buying if you want to buy another English club,' said Jordan. Textor failed with an attempt to buy Everton this year and has previously held talks with Watford's owner, Gino Pozzo, about investing at Vicarage Road. Guardian

I was told I'd never play football again after going blind in one eye, now I'm set to face PSG in the Club World Cup
ONLY two years ago, Georgi Minoungou was told he would never play football again. However, now he is set to line up against the champions of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain, at the Club World Cup. 5 Georgi Minoungou fought back from a horror eye injury to star at the Club World Cup Credit: EPA 5 The Ivorian winger underwent surgery in 2023 in his left eye after his eye grew swollen and filled with blood Credit: Getty 5 Doctors told him he would never play football again Credit: Getty 5 But in a stunning story the heroic 22-year-old stars for Seattle Sounders Credit: AP Seattle Sounders star, Minoungou, was hit by an eye infection in the summer of 2023 that left him without vision in his left eye following a series of unexpected events during a Marbella training camp. For many, such a severe setback would be life-changing, let alone spelling the end of a footballer's career. However, Minoungou has shown an incredible resilience and determination to forge a living out of playing football - even if it is something the 22-year-old is too humble to say out loud. Speaking to READ MORE IN FOOTBALL Ivorian winger Minoungou arrived in the United States in 2022 after a 20-hour flight to Washington from Czech second-tier side MFK Vyskov to join Tacoma Defiance, the reserve team of Seattle Sounders, on loan. All he had with him was a suitcase, a poor grasp of English and his footballing skills which he had been polishing at the age of two. But from humble beginnings in the small town of Batiebly, his football skills shone through and earned him a permanent move ahead of the 2023 season - the club's first-ever international transfer. He said: "There was already a contract prepared for me to join the first team permanently. Most read in Football "Everyone was happy – coaches, staff. Everything was in place. Then we came back from the game, and it happened." Minoungou had scored in a friendly against Swedish side Hammarby IF. Jude Bellingham reveals rivalry with brother Jobe at Club World Cup in cheeky interview However, just days after being described as a "special" player by assistant coach Predrag Radosavljevic, disaster struck as the Ivorian was forced to sit on the sidelines, before things got much worse. After a few training sessions, his eye had grown swollen and itchy. Three days passed and it became full of blood, and it had undergone a full colour change by the time another week passed. Minoungou recalled how one shocked specialist admitted they had not seen "anything like it in 38 years," and even described his look as having been hit five times simultaneously with a ball. Doctors eventually put him under the knife, where they discovered the nerves in his left eye were completely dead, speculating the origin could have been from a tumour or cancer, or even something he had had as a child - with as many as six MRI scans failing to pinpoint the reason. Hyphema was another diagnosis put forward, but it did not matter to, Minoungou who only wanted to play as he said: "I'd worked so hard for that first-team contract, and now it felt like my whole life was falling apart. "Then the doctor told me something that hit even harder: 'Georgie, I don't think you'll be able to play football again'." While his eye had been saved, his vision hadn't, and the emotional experience left him feeling like he had fallen from the 100th floor of a high-rise block of apartments. Doctors had prepared the paperwork to say he couldn't play anymore, but Minoungou asked them to give him a week to prove he could still play. And despite going against doctor's orders and only being able to see one side of the pitch, Minoungou had team-mates jokingly asking him if he was sure he could see with just one eye after he managed to dribble past everyone. It took around six months for the winger to make a full recovery, making his comeback on the pitch before he eventually made his Major League Soccer debut against He had to wait a little longer for his first goal, which finally arrived in November against Vancouver, but his hard work has paid off, and now he will have the chance to test his skills against one of the world's best in Nuno Mendes. The two-time MLS Cup champions take on PSG at Lumen Field at 8pm tonight. Minoungou, who still has to go to the hospital every six months or so for a routine check-up up concluded by revealing what he would say to the 2023 version of himself. He said: "I'd look at that version of me and say, 'Bro, you did great not giving up. "If you had, you'd have missed one of the biggest games of your life.' I'll probably face Nuno Mendes – and he's one of the best left-backs in the world right now. Man… it's unbelievable." 5 Minoungou will be able to test himself against European champion Nuno Mendes Credit: Getty Club World Cup 2025 Guide SOME of the world's biggest clubs are in action at this summer's Club World Cup in the United States!
