Hit streaming show's creator announces massive change
WARNING: The Last Of Us spoilers ahead.
The creators of the hit series The Last Of Us have confirmed that a huge change is in the works for season three, as the story shifts focus to a character who has had little screen time until now.
The post-apocalyptic series, adapted from the hugely popular video game of the same name, debuted in 2023 as a two-hander between stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, playing a surrogate.
But – and again, spoiler alert – the second episode of season two offered up a massive shock (at least for viewers not familiar with the game), as Pascal's character Joel met a grisly end on-screen, leaving Ramsey's character Ellie to go it alone.
Ellie spent the rest of the season searching for Joel's killer, Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
Season two ended on a cliffhanger as Ellie finally found Abby, the screen fading to black during a violent shootout.
But then, the very last scene of the season seemed to suggest we won't be seeing much of Ellie in season three, regardless of whether she lives or dies: A flashback to Abby's character, several days earlier, as if to mark that the story will continue next season told through her perspective.
At an Emmys-hosted event to mark the end of the show's second season this week, The Last Of Us co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann opened up about the controversy surrounding Joel's death and hinted at what was still to come in the series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Druckmann said there had already been several failed attempts to adapt the video game for the screen: 'I think it was good to go on that journey to end up at HBO, end up at a place that leaned into those controversial decisions, I guess,' he said, referring to Pascal's character's brutal on-screen death.
'But the decisions are just what the story required, and even now, it's like I can't believe that they let us structure the series in this way. Meaning like we just ended season two, and season three is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.'
That information appeared to be news to even actress Kaitlyn Dever herself, who was dialled in to the event remotely and reacted with joy and surprise at the news (watch her reaction in the video above).
Now we have confirmation that The Last Of Us season three will focus on Abby instead of Ellie, the next big question is when exactly it will air – or rather, how long we have to wait.
There was a gap of more than two years between the show's initial, nine-episode season and its even shorter seven-episode second season.
GamesRadar+ reports that writing has not yet begun on season three, and fans can expect a similar two-year wait to see more of the show sometime in 2027.

The judge overseeing Harvey Weinstein's criminal trial in Manhattan has declared a mistrial on a rape charge against the former Hollywood movie mogul, after one of the jurors refused to continue deliberations. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, faced a retrial that began on 23 April after a New York state appeals court last year overturned his 2020 conviction. He was accused by prosecutors in this case of raping an aspiring actress and assaulting two other women. Weinstein, 73, pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. The jury found Weinstein guilty on one of the three counts he faced, which stemmed from his alleged assault of former production assistant Miriam (Mimi) Haley in 2006. The jury found Weinstein not guilty of a charge stemming from his alleged assault of Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress. Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber declared a mistrial after the judge said the jury could not reach a verdict on a third count, which charged him with raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. Weinstein faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced. He has separately been sentenced to 16 years in prison following a rape conviction in California. In a startling development, the jury foreperson told Farber other members of the panel were shouting at him and threatening him for refusing to change his vote on the rape count. Farber sent jurors home for the day to give them time to cool down and instructed the foreperson to arrive in court separately on Thursday. In closing arguments on 3 June, the prosecution told the 12 jurors the evidence showed how Weinstein used his power and influence to trap and abuse women. The defence countered the accusers lied on the witness stand out of spite after their consensual sexual encounters with the Oscar-winning producer failed to result in Hollywood stardom. A jury found Weinstein guilty in February 2020 of raping Mann and sexually assaulting Haley. Sokola's allegation was not part of that case. The conviction was a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. But the New York Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, overturned that conviction in April 2024. It said the trial judge erred by letting women testify that Weinstein had assaulted them, though their accusations were not the basis of the criminal charges. Though the conviction was thrown out, Weinstein, who has had a litany of health problems in recent years and attended the retrial in a wheelchair, has remained behind bars because of his California conviction. Richard Gere opens up about new life in Spain after quitting US
Richard Gere has hit out at President Donald Trump over his political agenda, claiming he has created a 'violent, crude, and ignorant' world. The Hollywood star, who quit life in the US and relocated to Spain with his wife, Alejandra Silva, 42, and their children, has been outspoken about Mr Trump and his policies that he implemented in the US. 'If each of us were kind to each other, the world would be different and better,' the 75-year-old told El Pais. 'Not all of us respond to wisdom, but we all respond to kindness. 'Even in the case of Trump, I'm sure there is something kind about him. People say he's charming in private. 'Yet the world he's created around himself is violent, crude, and ignorant. Many of the things he's doing we've never seen before.' When asked whether he believes Mr Trump's second term in office could 'irreversibly change the values of US society,' Gere admitted he 'worries' about it — claiming the president is 'cut off from' society's natural sense of empathy. The Golden Globe winner's latest comments come after he slammed Mr Trump as a 'bully and a thug' while accepting the International Goya Award in recognition of his ongoing humanitarian work. 'We're all part of a universe of overlapping pain and sadness and joy. … I see this world that we're in now forgetting that,' he said back in February. 'This very foolish tribalism is starting to take us over, where we think that we're all separate from each other. 'And we have unfortunately elected officials that don't inspire us in the way that we want to be inspired. I'm coming from a place now … we're in a very dark place in America where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States. 'But it's not just in the US, it's everywhere.' Still, Gere admits that there are plenty of things he misses about his life in the US — specifically, the people he left behind, including his adult son, Homer. 'I miss my family and friends. I was just in New York visiting my friends and my oldest son,' he shared. 'We went to Pennsylvania, to the small town where my father and mother came from, and we visited their grave. 'I need to somehow feel connected to my history, to my best friends, to stay in contact with all of it.' Gere moved to the European country with his family in November, after offloading their stunning Connecticut mansion in an off-market deal, Realtor reports. The 'Sommersby' actor noted that watching his wife 'blossoming' in Spain has been reward enough for making the move. The 'Pretty Woman' actor explained that he wanted to return the favour she did for him in upping sticks and joining him in the US when they began their romance. 'Alejandra gave me six or seven years in the US; she dropped everything to be with me and create a life together,' he said. 'But I could see it was important for her to come back, that she really missed her family and friends. She's blossoming here.' Although Gere noted that he has never lived permanently abroad, he said that he has created a sense of belonging in his new Madrid dwelling by ensuring that he has access to the creature comforts he needs most — specifically his 'office, piano, guitars, and books'. 'In a way, I've taken my world and put it here,' he said. While the family has quickly laid down roots in what El Pais described as a 'chalet in the exclusive Madrid neighbourhood of La Moraleja,' Gere's wife noted they are not set on spending the rest of their days in the city. She told the publication they plan to 'stay … for a few years,' describing Madrid as a 'city that has … a very special energy'. However, she has previously revealed the family had always planned to 'come back' to the US. She told the Daily Mail that they were already spending their time going 'back and forth' between the two countries in order to visit their loved ones regularly. 'For a few years [we'll live in Spain], and then come back. But we're always coming back,' she said. 'We'll come back here in the summer because we have the kids at camp. We just have to balance our lives there and here.' The family has retained a home base in the US, despite selling their permanent residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. That home is now set to be torn down in order to make room for a nine-plot subdivision. In his April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Gere revealed he planned to keep a property 'in the countryside in New York,' although he hesitated to share specific details about its location.
