NEW DELHI: A paternal grandfather is among three persons arrested for allegedly kidnapping his two-year-old grandson — a relative of Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Devendra Patel and demanding a ransom of 1.5 kilograms of gold, officials said on Friday.
The child, son of Yogendra Patel (nephew of MLA Devendra Patel), was abducted from his home in Paloha village under Begamganj tehsil in Raisen district on Thursday morning. He was rescued later that night from Tamia town in Chhindwara district, around 200 km away.
Superintendent of Police, Raisen, Pankaj Pandey, said the main accused is the child's paternal grandfather, Arvind Patel.
'We formed 11 police teams to trace the child.
Based on leads, we tracked him to Tamia, from where he was rescued from the house of Arvind Patel's friend,' the SP said. The child was safely reunited with his family.
According to police, Arvind Patel, along with his relative Rakesh Patel and a third accomplice, plotted the abduction and demanded 1.5 kg of gold as ransom. A van and motorbike used in the crime have been seized.
The boy went missing around 11am on Thursday. Treating it as a kidnapping case, police launched a massive search using drones and sniffer dogs to track down the accused.
Congress MLA Devendra Patel represents Silwani in Raisen district.

New CFSL building in Rajarhat will bolster evidence-based justice across eastern India: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a new building of the Central Forensic Science Lab (CFSL) at Rajarhat in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district and said it was a significant step towards building a data- and evidence-based justice system in eastern India. 'It is a significant step towards building a data and evidence-based justice system in India. The state-of-the-art facility, built at an approximate cost of Rs 90 crore, is poised to serve not only West Bengal but also all North Eastern states, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam, handling complex cases from across the cluster,' he said. Addressing the gathering, Shah talked about the pivotal role of forensic science in the modern criminal justice system, especially with the introduction of the three new criminal laws. 'The new laws have laid special emphasis on evidence, documents, forensic science, and punishment of the guilty based on them,' he said. 'This FSL will play a special role in explaining their importance, implementing them, and delivering the right evidence to the specific police station.' The home minister also spoke about the central government's vision of creating a nationwide network of forensic science labs, serving clusters of three or four states. He announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs would dedicate the next one to two years to developing the overall infrastructure and training for this initiative. 'A nationwide campaign to disseminate forensic information to police stations is set to commence from January 2026, aiming to fully inform the country's criminal justice system. This enhanced forensic infrastructure would significantly streamline and expedite the investigation process, leaving no room for doubt and ensuring that the guilty are punished and the aggrieved receive justice,' he said. Shah urged all police stations, courts, and public prosecutors to understand and utilise the new system to its full potential, facilitating scientific conclusions in complex cases with expert assistance. The new Rajarhat CFSL building will house facilities for various forensic disciplines, including biology, serology, DNA testing, narcotics, chemistry, computer science, psychology, and physics, ensuring comprehensive expert support. Shah stressed the importance of staying 'two steps ahead' of criminals, especially with financial transactions, communication, and identity increasingly moving online. He cited examples of how DNA identification has solved decades-old cases and how mobile forensics, call data, apps, and psychological profiling are aiding in uncovering the source of crimes. 'Our criminal justice system is moving in a new direction,' he added. Shah also used the platform to mention the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), stating that these laws were made by the elected government for the people of India, replacing 160-year-old British-era legislation. ‘Screenshot every 5 min', no 'oppa': Smuggled phone gives chilling glimpse of North Korea regime

A phone smuggled out of North Korea last year has uncovered fresh evidence of the lengths Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un's regime is going to for censoring information from outside the country and suppressing cultural influence from South Korea. The device, obtained in 2024 and recently analysed by the BBC, shows that Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un's government is not only banning foreign media like South Korean TV dramas, but is also using technology to police the very language North Koreans use. While phones in North Korea do not have access to the internet, South Korean shows and entertainment are still being covertly smuggled across the border—aimed at revealing the freedoms and prosperity of life in the neighbouring country. In response, the regime has intensified its crackdown. Not just this, footage from the smuggled phone demonstrates how the North Korean government also automatically censors common South Korean slang. For instance, when users type 'oppa'—a popular South Korean term used by women to refer to their boyfriends or older brothers—the phone changes it to 'comrade' and issues a warning: 'This word can only be used to describe your siblings.' Typing 'South Korea' into the phone results in the phrase being automatically altered to 'puppet state'—the regime's official term for the South. Perhaps most troublingly, the phone smuggled out of North Korea was taking automatically taking screenshots every five minutes, without the user's knowledge. These image files are hidden from the user but accessible to authorities only, giving them a powerful surveillance tool to monitor behavior and punish those consuming banned content. The revelations offer a rare and chilling glimpse into how North Korea's authoritarian regime is using technology not only to isolate its citizens from the outside world, but also to shape the very way they think and speak. Kim Jong Un's regime is known to be one of the most secretive and repressive in the world, marked by absolute control over nearly every aspect of life in North Korea. Since taking power in 2011, Kim Jong Un has maintained an iron grip through widespread surveillance, harsh punishments for dissent, and a strict ban on outside information. The regime favours ideological loyalty and uses state propaganda to glorify Kim Jong Un while demonising foreign influence, especially from South Korea and the West.

Assam: 81 ‘anti-nationals' arrested for ‘sympathising' with Pakistan after Pahalgam attack, says CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 81 'anti-nationals' have been arrested till now for 'sympathising' with Pakistan following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Phalgam. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the latest arrests included a person named Mohammed Dilbar Hussain from Sonitpur and another named Hafizur Rahman from Kamrup. 'Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking action,' he added on X. The attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Since the attack, the BJP government in Assam has been arresting persons accused of 'defending Pakistan' through social media posts or public remarks. 81 Anti-Nationals are now behind bars for sympathising with Pak | #Update | 1 June 1️⃣ @SonitpurPolice arrested Md Dilbar Hussain 2️⃣ @KamrupPolice arrested Hafizur Rahman Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking actions. — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) June 1, 2025 On April 24, Sarma had said that the state would take action against anyone directly or indirectly defending the 'horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam'. This came after Opposition All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for claiming that the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack may have been the results of conspiracies by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Islam got bail in the sedition case on May 14, but was detained again under the National Security Act on the same day, PTI reported. The Act allows for long periods of detention without trial and suspends important rights of the accused person, including the right to legal representation and immediate information about the cause of the arrest.
