Ex TUI flight attendant facing jail after ‘trying to smuggle £1.2m drugs'
A former flight attendant could spend decades "rotting behind bars" after she was allegedly caught smuggling £1.2million worth of drugs while travelling.
Charlotte May Lee was arrested after arriving in Sri Lanka from Thailand on Monday, May 12. The 21-year-old, who previously worked for TUI, had left her home in Surrey for the Far Eastern country two weeks ago, following vague remarks to friends about meeting a man while there.
However, at Bandaranaike International Airport in the city of Colombo, her two suitcases were found to reportedly have been filled with 46kg of a highly addictive drug known as kush.
The synthetic substance is made from a combination of drugs, chemicals and even human bones, reports the Mirror.
A friend of Lee's family told the Sun on Sunday : 'We're frantically worried. She was arrested then seemingly abandoned and is rotting in a jail cell. She's very scared.'
Another friend said: 'She's been told if convicted, because of the size of the drugs haul, she's looking at between 20 and 25 years in jail.
'British Embassy staff warned her she's going nowhere soon.'
Kush is 25 times more potent than opioid fentanyl, and is often cut with deadly chemicals. It was first discovered in Sierra Leone, West Africa, around four years ago, however no official statistics exist on the exact number of related deaths.
What is known is its horrific effects on users' mental health, with figures from the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital showing a surge of nearly 4,000 per cent in kush-related admissions between 2020 and 2023, totalling 1,865. Around 63 per cent of current patients presented with issues linked to taking the drug.
A National Task force on Drugs and Substance Abuse has been established to tackle the crisis. Centres are expected to be opened "adequately staffed by trained professionals to offer care and support to people with drug addiction".

Lee's case is similar to that of fellow Brit, 18-year-old Bella May Culley, who was detained in Georgia on May 11 carrying £200,000 worth of cannabis.
She had vanished and stopped contact with her family while travelling in Southeast Asia, before turning up in the ex-Soviet country.
If found guilty of the drugs offences, she faces a long prison sentence- potentially life behind bars in the worst case.
Her grandfather William Culley, 80, previously revealed: "She went to the Philippines to see somebody, a lad there, who she used to go out with a couple of years ago, who was working out there.
"She said, ' I'm going on my own, but I'm meeting Ross out there.' Or Russ, I'm not sure what his name is. He was working out there for his father's company or something – but now I wonder if what she told me was true."
He added: "Last night they were told they could see her in the morning. They said they'd ring me straight after they had seen her, but I haven't had a call. They must still be waiting."

Second Brit tourist found dead and 'naked' in holiday resort horror
A "naked"British tourist has been found dead in the party resort of Albufeira. He is thought to have died in a drunken fall after crashing down steps in the Algarve holiday resort's Old Town. The alarm was raised just before 7am on Wednesday, with news of the incident only emerging today. Respected Portuguese daily Correo da Manha is reporting the tourist was 'completely naked' when he was found at the bottom of the steps in an avenue called Avenida da Libertade. An autopsy has already taken place but the results have not been made public. Portuguese police are understood to have ruled out any link to a crime and are said to be treating the death as a tragedy linked to excessive alcohol consumption. It was not immediately clear today where the tourist, who is aged in his twenties, had been heading from and to and whether he was staying at a hotel in Albufeira. No explanation has been given as to why he might have been naked, although police have not yet confirmed he had no clothes on. On Wednesday the body of a Scottish tourist who had been missing for seven days after vanishing during a night out in Albufeira was found. Greg Monks, 37, from Glasgow, had been gone out drinking at bars in the raucous Albufeira strip after flying to the resort hours earlier with friends for a stag do. He is thought to have jumped over a wall and fallen down a steep cliff after becoming disorientated as he tried to head back to his holiday hotel.

Drug dealer who splashed out on life of luxury ordered to pay back just £96,000
Danielle Stafford, 31, splashed out on tens of thousands of pounds on glitzy watches and Louis Vuitton bags. A drug dealer who splashed out on a luxury life has been ordered to pay back just £96,000 after her operation was unravelled by pure chance. Danielle Stafford, 31, formerly of Hallgate, Cottingham, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in April 2023. She admitted to three offences of being concerned in supplying heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis, and another of possessing cash as criminal property, on dates spanning October 2017 to May 2020. She was sent down at Hull Crown Court. The court heard how Stafford, a University of Hull graduate and former engineer, had splashed out on nine watches and three Louis Vuitton handbags. The case was heard again at the same court recently, where prosecutors determined how much money Stafford made from her criminal activities. Prosecutor Nadim Bashir said a criminal benefit figure had been agreed at £96,263. Stafford has been ordered to repay the funds within three months. If she fails to do so, she will face more jail time. Stafford was snared by cops after she was clocked speeding in 2020. The motor was stopped by police, where she "immediately lied", telling cops: "Ill be honest, I've got this" and went on to hand a small silver wrap containing two buds of cannabis skunk. Police went on to find cannabis on her, including a food bag containing cannabis skunk and, from a pocket, another food bag containing cannabis skunk. While on the way to the police station, Stafford was seen "fidgeting" with her jogging bottoms and was asked if she had more drugs hidden. She then pulled out a bag containing a large amount of small bags of cocaine. Police said there were 56 wraps, valued at £2,800. When police searched her property in Cottingham, they found cocaine valued at £13,500 and an estimated £4,100 of heroin in a jar. Stafford denied knowledge of them. An estimated £2,500 of herbal cannabis was found in an empty banana box and bank notes totalling £670 as well as £2,350 and £1,480 in cash. More cash, valued at £7,580 was found in a safe, but she denied it was hers. Mr Bashir said Stafford was an "enthusiastic" cannabis dealer and had become a cocaine dealer. He added: "The natural result of this was that she was able to accumulate a substantial amount of wealth, including purchasing an investment property, a house to rent. Cash found in her home address amounted to £26,917. "The contents of her home address in Hallgate, Cottingham, is strong evidence of the nature of her drugs business. The amount, type and value of drugs found at her home were substantial. The drugs alone were street valued at £33,600. This is sustained drug dealing."
