Golf-PGA Championship under way as Quail Hollow awaits McIlroy and Scheffler

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) -Sunny skies and soggy conditions greeted the early starters as the PGA Championship got underway on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club where the high-profile group of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele were about to begin.
Big hitters could have an early edge as intense rain earlier in the week has left fairways wet and, as a result, the par-71 layout that measures 7,626 yards is playing much longer, though conditions are expected to firm as the week goes on.
World number two McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam at last month's Masters, will be the first from his high-profile group to tee off when he hits his opening shot from the par-five 10th hole at 8:22 a.m. ET (1222 GMT).
Scheffler has hit his stride right in time for the year's second major having matched the PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record in his last start, while Schauffele is bidding to become the event's first repeat winner since Brooks Koepka in 2019.
Justin Thomas, who won the first of his two PGA Championship titles when it was last held at Quail Hollow in 2017, and Jordan Spieth, making his ninth attempt at securing a career Grand Slam, are among the late starters.
Among the other notable players with late tee times are U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, 2025 Masters runner-up Justin Rose and world number four Collin Morikawa.
European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald had the honour of hitting the first shot of the tournament when he set off from the first tee in the company of Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Germany's Martin Kaymer.

"We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games," he added referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. In an entertaining battle at the Andy Murray Arena, Zheng showed she could be a worthy contender heading into Wimbledon as she marched into her first semi-final on grass when she converted her fourth match point. Zheng has won singles titles on clay and hardcourts but she is still adapting to grass, with the 22-year-old showing a marked improvement in her match with Raducanu after she changed her shoes midway through a game when the Briton was serving. "I want to apologise for my shoes. I didn't want to fall two times, but I just don't know how to run on grass," Zheng said sheepishly. "I still don't know when I have to change the grass shoes. I think right now is the time, so it's the new shoes. I feel much better to run. "It was a really difficult match for me, especially (because) she has got more experience than me on the grasscourt. I'm just really happy to get into the semi-final for the first time on grass." Zheng and Raducanu were neck-and-neck in the opening set until the Chinese world number five finally broke serve to go 4-2 up. The home crowd largely favoured Raducanu but Zheng did not waver and the Paris Olympic champion claimed the opening set despite a fall on set point. Raducanu took a medical timeout for a back issue before the second set and that swung the momentum the Briton's way as she secured a double break to go 3-0 up. But Zheng quickly recovered and levelled the set, before going 5-4 up with an overhead smash that kissed the line, with the crowd gasping as one when they watched a replay of the point. Serving to stay in the match, Raducanu produced a double fault to give Zheng three match points which she saved before the top seed prevailed. MARIA UPSETS RYBAKINA Germany's Maria, who came through the qualifiers and also knocked out sixth seed Karolina Muchova in the last-16, stunned Rybakina 6-4 7-6(4) to move into a WTA semi-final for the first time in two years. A mother of two whose eldest daughter is 11 and travels with her on tour, Maria is ranked number 86 in the world. "Oh my God, it means so much to me. It's a perfect example to never give up and to always keep going, doesn't matter what, because I'm still here and I'm living this dream," said Maria, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2022. "I have my family with me, an amazing team. So much support and so much love, and we are really enjoying the ride together. Zverev is seeking his first grasscourt title and he was involved in a tight opening set which was tied at 5-5 when the German switched gears in the final two games to clinch it. But Zverev was far more dominant against his American opponent in the second set as he finished the match with 31 winners in a contest that lasted 90 minutes. "I'm in the semi-finals now and now I really want to focus on trying to do the best I can," Zverev said. "I know the opponents are going to get tougher but I'm really happy on the court right now I'm really happy in Stuttgart and I'm looking forward to the next two days." Zverev will play third seed Shelton next after the American, who was virtually unstoppable on his first serve, beat Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4, firing 18 aces. Shelton was so dominant in the second set that he did not lose a single point on serve while he won 100% of his first-serve points in the match, with victory ensuring he will break into the top 10 for the first time in his career. Engel had claimed his first professional victory on grass earlier this week when he beat James Duckworth, following it up with an upset win over seventh seed Alex Michelsen, but beating Auger-Aliassime proved to be a step too far for the teenager. "His serve was so incredibly good today that I felt pressure in my own service games," Engel said. "But it was great fun playing in front of this crowd again.
