Three Texarkana-area mayors talk about the state of their cities
TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS)—At the annual State of the Cities breakfast, the mayors of Texarkana, Ar., Tx., and Nash all agreed that their cities are open for business.
'I think that that is something that we've really been working on hard, at least the 7 years that I've been mayor, is having something that businesses and industry are interested in,' said Texarkana, Ar. Mayor Allen Brown.
$2 million awarded to Miller Co. industrial site
Brown pointed to new housing developments, grant funding to further improve the new airport terminal into a hub for passengers and businesses, and their efforts to bring companies to the REDI Arkansas Manufacturing Center.
'Which is 1340 acres that's being marketed even today in a show in Georgia. So we have a lot of opportunity for people to want to live and work here,' said Brown.
Texas-side Mayor Bob Bruggeman spoke about downtown revitalization, including the opening of the Lofts at the Grimthe, a conversion of another historic building into housing.

Bruggeman also touted the work being done to build out the Texas A&M Texarkana campus, improvements to city sport facilities, and road projects near local schools.
'We have infrastructure in place. Quality of life is something that we look at and analyze on a on a daily basis as far as providing… for families who live here in our community or those families who are looking at perhaps moving here to Texarkana, USA,' said Texarkana, Tx. Mayor Bruggeman.
Nash, Tx. Mayor Robert Bunch highlighted the work to develop a downtown district. They are making a stretch of East New Boston Road more walkable and attractive with a new boutique hotel and a farm-to-table restaurant.
Mayor Brown also invited students from North Heights Community School, which has a micro-society that includes its own version of a city government. So, technically, North Heights Mayor Scout Watts was the fourth mayor in attendance.

Popular home goods chain files for bankruptcy amid tariff trouble
At Home, a popular home goods retailer with 260 stores across 40 US states, has filed for bankruptcy, citing the backdrop of tariff increases and a slowdown in consumer spending. The Dallas-based company announced Monday that it had entered an agreement with its lenders that 'will eliminate substantially all' of its roughly $2 billion in debt and provide $200 million in fresh funding to keep At Home operating while it navigates the Chapter 11 process. Brad Weston, At Home's CEO who joined the company last year, said in a statement that the company is 'operating against the backdrop of an increasingly dynamic and rapidly evolving trade environment as we navigate the impact of tariffs' and that the changes 'will improve our ability to compete in the marketplace in the face of continued volatility and increase the resilience of our business for the long term.' Businesses across the United States are grappling with uncertainty about tariffs, including on the countries from which At Home sources its products, notably China. At one point, American tariffs on that country were as high as 145% before an agreement last month to temporarily lower that to 30%. A pullback in discretionary spending in the US in recent years has also spelled trouble for the home goods industry, with The Container Store, Bed Bath & Beyond and Big Lots all filing for bankruptcy. At Home, which sells a wide variety of items such as furniture, rugs and other home accessories, said it would continue to operate as usual, including fulfilling orders, paying vendors and maintaining its loyalty program during the Chapter 11 process. However, the privately held company hinted that it might close some locations, saying that a 'majority of our stores will remain open.' The Wall Street Journal recently reported that around 20 At Home locations were set to shutter. Upon exiting Chapter 11, At Home 'will move forward with new owners and a meaningfully strengthened balance sheet,' Weston said.

Trucking's English-Language Rule for Drivers Will Backfire
Foreign-born truck drivers may need to bone up on their English-language skills by June 25. That's when authorities have the green light to bar holders of commercial driver's licenses from the road because they don't have a sufficient grasp of the language. Large trucking companies, which normally decry driver shortages, have been pushing for this change, citing safety reasons. The Trump administration was more than happy to rescind a 2016 directive by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that suspended the lack of English-language proficiency as a reason for putting a driver out of service. 'America First means safety first,' Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said when he signed the order during a May 20 event in Austin, Texas. 'Americans are a lot safer on roads alongside truckers who can understand and interpret our traffic signs.'
