Glenn Maxwell announces his retirement from ODI cricket; fans say ‘end of an era' as his ‘fiery knocks will be missed'

Mint2 days ago

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, 36, announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday, after an illustrious career of 149 matches over more than ten years. Known as one of the format's most thrilling players, he had the ability to dramatically change the course of a game with every powerful stroke. Fans say this marks 'the end of an era' as his 'fiery knocks will be missed'.
One of the users said, '#GlennMaxwell retired because he wants to give someone in his position a fair chance for the 2027 odi cricket worldcup... This is why they win so many tournaments. Team over an individual always... Champion thinking [sic].'
Another remarked, 'Happy retirement glen maxwell. We can't forget your 201* innings agents afganistan in odi world cup 2023 [sic].'
'It's sad to see another legend of our generation step away from the game today. Glen Maxwell's retirement marks the end of an era, and his fearless style and dynamic presence on the field will always be remembered. Thank you for the memories, Maxi! [sic]', 'Wish you could've given us an innings to remember as your last hurrah. Nvm. Thank you for the 'Mad Max' moments, Maxi! Your fiery knocks will be missed [sic], " were some other comments made.
While his tally of 3,990 runs in 149 matches and 136 innings at an average of 33.81, along with four centuries, 23 fifties, and 77 wickets, may seem modest to some, there are hidden metrics and records that highlight his true impact. Within these numbers lies a genuine match-winner in Glenn Maxwell.
According to Wisden, Glenn Maxwell has scored the fifth-most runs for Australia while batting at positions five or lower, and he boasts the best strike rate in that group, an explosive 123.36. Impressively, all four of his ODI centuries came from those middle and lower-order positions: one at No. 5, two at No. 6 (including that unforgettable double century), and one at No. 7. Only the legendary Andrew Symonds (six centuries) has more tons in that role for Australia.
Maxwell's power-hitting has been one of the most extraordinary aspects of his game. Among players with at least 1,000 ODI runs, he holds the highest strike rate ever recorded for Australia at 126.70. Only West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell (130.22) ranks higher globally, though he played significantly fewer matches, just 56 ODIs and 47 innings.
When it comes to six-hitting, Maxwell stands in rarefied air. Among the select group of players with at least 150 ODI sixes, only 17 across the history of the format, his sixes-per-innings ratio of 1.13 is second only to Indian opener Rohit Sharma (1.29).
When Maxwell first wore the World Cup winner's medal in 2015 on home soil, he had every reason to be proud, scoring 324 runs in just six innings at an astounding average of 64.80 and a strike rate of 182.02. Even prolific teammates like David Warner and Steve Smith couldn't quite match that rare blend of consistency and chaos.
Fast forward to the 2023 World Cup in India, and it is impossible not to highlight his iconic unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against a fired-up Afghanistan side. With Australia reeling at 91/7, Maxwell's heroic knock turned the game on its head, guiding his team to a miraculous win. Battling through crippling cramps, back spasms, and oppressive heat, his resilience in the face of physical and mental agony was so inspiring that even fans rooting for the fairytale rise of Afghanistan found themselves switching allegiances, just to see Maxwell's near-meditative masterclass get the ending it deserved.

India is very important for FIDE: President Dvorkovich

STAVANGER: Arkady Dvorkovich, the president of FIDE, the world governing body for chess, has a lot on his tray. The venue for the upcoming World Cup in India is yet to be decided. The threat to Classical chess is real. Will sponsors walk out if Magnus Carlsen walks out? Dvorkovich, currently in Stavanger for Norway Chess, answered these questions to select Indian media. Excerpts: On the World Cup venue in India and why it's yet to be announced The location will be announced by one of the top officials in the Indian government. It may be made public in the next few days. We love all Indian locations. I have heard about the argument about pollution (in New Delhi in November) but, again, if the Indian government says it's going to be in New Delhi, we would not fight against it. It's a decision of the Indian government. What I would say is it's always good to take chess to new places, it's good to expand chess activities. On whether the Indian government has assured visas to all eligible players irrespective of their nationality Yes, that's the condition always. They also know about it, yes. It was the same at the Olympiad in Chennai. It's not going to be an issue, I think. On the importance of the Indian market to FIDE I know the top guys at the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and they are really committed to promoting chess. India is extremely important because it's one of the biggest countries in terms of population and chess audience. Given the success of players, people love watching and following. And for us, those numbers are really big. We already have some sponsors from India. Every year, we have some important events in India. On getting sponsors even without Carlsen We are still able to raise very reasonable prize funds without Magnus. Magnus would maybe increase that but numbers were already better even after Magnus left. For instance, at the World Championships in Singapore, we had bigger prize funds than for the previous World Championships. Magnus is a factor but not a decisive factor in raising funds for chess events. On the Magnus incident where he punched the chess board against D Gukesh It's a bit unusual, yes. But if there are no complaints... I think normally an arbiter should do some kind of a soft warning for that. But I would not call what Magnus did disrespectful. It was emotional and he was really disappointed.

IPL 2025: List Of Major Trophies Won By Virat Kohli In His Illustrious Career

Last Updated: Virat Kohli, ace India and RCB batter, finally won the IPL title, completing his collection of major cricket trophies. Ace India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Virat Kohli won the coveted Indian Premier League title on Tuesday, to fill a cabinet that has the biggest titles in the world. Other than the World Test Championship final, Kohli has now won all the big titles and would definitely strive for a few more, as he goes through the fag end of his career. We take a look at the major trophies that Kohli has won in his illustrious career: ODI World Cup: A 22-year-old Kohli won the title back in 2011, when he was just three years into his international career. He scored 282 runs in nine matches in that tournament, at an average of 35.25 and with a hundred to his name, which came in India's opening game. He played three more ODI World Cups over the years and finished as semifinalists twice and runners-up once. T20 World Cup: This title took years to come for Kohli, and when it did, he hung up his boots from the format. The final of the 2024 edition of the tournament saw him play a match-winning knock against South Africa in Barbados as he took India to safety after an early collapse. India's first T20 World Cup title had come back in 2007, a year before Kohli's international debut, and after failing in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021 and 2022, he finally won it last year. Champions Trophy: This is the only ICC trophy that Kohli has won twice. He won it first back in 2013, as a 24-year-old, and this triumph remained India's biggest win till last year's T20 World Cup. In 2025, as the most experienced player of the batch, he won the title again, beating arch-rivals New Zealand in the final. IPL Trophy: While it probably wouldn't rank anywhere above the aforementioned, this eluded Kohli for the longest time. 'As far as the IPL trophy is concerned, you've made me wait 18 years to be able to lift it and celebrate my friend, but it's been worth the wait," Kohli wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. It took a mammoth effort from everyone in the RCB franchise to finally hand the star batter the coveted title. First Published: June 04, 2025, 12:45 IST
