EPCC, United Way El Paso partner for student services
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Community College (EPCC) and United Way of El Paso will join a new partnership to offer services to students and the community at each campus, EPCC said in a press release on Monday, Feb. 10.
EPCC says resiliency navigators will be available to students and the community through United Way's program. The resiliency navigators will help students and the community with guidance to address financial hardship, referrals for housing assistance, assistance with filling out applications, and referrals for other programs.
Starting on Monday, Feb. 10, navigators will be available at every EPCC Student Parent Resource Center (SPRC). Below is the following schedule:
Mondays: Mission del Paso Campus, Room C 123
Tuesdays: Transmountain Campus, Room 1700
Wednesdays: Northwest Campus, Room L100
Thursdays: Valle Verde Campus, Room A2415
Fridays: Rio Grande Campus, Room E116
'Resiliency navigators collaborating across multiple sites at EPCC will be available to assist city residents experiencing housing instability and financial hardship. They will also offer support for those seeking to engage with United Way programs, such as the Family Resiliency Center for individuals impacted by the mass violence incident of August 3rd, as well as the Parents as Teachers program for parents of children aged five and under. The navigators will provide essential guidance, connecting individuals and families with resources and services tailored to their specific needs. Working closely with participants, our resiliency navigators will develop personalized plans to ensure that everyone receives the necessary support to achieve greater stability and improve their overall well-being,' EPCC said.

United Way officials encouraged by awareness of 211 services; ‘We're very excited about the results of the … survey'
Awareness of the 211 Lake County service offered by United Way of Lake County to help people with a variety of needs — from paying for rent or a utility bill, to escaping domestic violence, to mental health, to legal issues and more — is growing and exceeding expectations, officials say. Three years after it was started in 2019, a survey commissioned by United Way showed 21.5% of county residents were aware of the telephone service's existence. Three years later, Gale Graves, the organization's vice president of community impact, said people are substantially more aware. After the initial survey, Graves said a second study was ordered earlier this year to determine whether the efforts to let people know how the service can help were fruitful. 'We're very excited about the results of the awareness survey,' she said, 'In 2022, we were told 15% (awareness) would be good, and we did 21.5%. Our awareness in Lake County is increasing even more. With a third aware, we are drawing awareness across the county.' Awareness of United Way's 211 service grew 63.4% between 2022 and 2025, with 33.4% of residents surveyed cognizant of the assistance across Lake County. The organization is using the latest survey results to help it plan for the future. Though anyone in Lake County might need to call 211, Graves said a larger percentage are those living below the poverty level, 8%, or who do not earn a living wage, 26%, are knowledgeable. ''People who are not earning a living wage' means they are not earning enough to be able to afford basic needs like housing, utilities or healthcare,' Graves said. 'They are not able to afford all the basics.' Among people or families with income less than $50,000 a year, Jennifer Strom, United Way's director of marketing and communications, said in an email awareness is higher, with 43.5% of the subgroup knowledgeable. Strom said a large number of calls come from people dealing with homelessness and needing shelter, recovering from substance abuse, those with mental health needs or crime victims. They are referred to partner agencies specializing in their situations. 'Some of our partner agencies serve the Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities,' Strom said. For those not speaking English or Spanish, Graves said there are interpretation services for 150 languages including Polish, Korean, Hindi, Russian, Ukrainian, Tagalog, Urdu and Mandarin. Part of the reason for the growth in awareness exceeding expectations comes from United Way's outreach to the county's Spanish-speaking community. Newspaper and radio commercials were done in both languages, according to a press release. Materials are multicultural. Between Jan. 1 and March 31 of this year, 211 has reached 14,884 community contacts and 1,300 people have been trained to use the service, according to the release. The training is done in both English and Spanish. Graves said United Way regularly goes to community events and holds workshops to both increase awareness and teach people how to use the 211 service. There is also contact with community partners who specialize in particular needs. 'We talk to people to make them aware of 211,' Graves said. 'We do trainings with people to teach them how to use 211.' Community partners include Family First of Lake County, NIRCO, school districts, HACES, Mano a Mano, libraries, the YWCA and more.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) — United Way of Wayne County launch their 2025 Summer Resource Page, a guide to events and opportunities available for youth and families during the summer. According to a press statement, 'this new online hub was developed as a direct result of the March 31st Community Conversation hosted in partnership with Mayor Gaylor and the City of Goldsboro, where more than 70 community leaders came together to discuss the needs and gaps facing local youth and families. One of the key themes that emerged was the importance of better communication and accessibility around existing summer programs and resources.' United Way rallying businesses to become drop-off locations for school supply drive
LAFAYETTE, La. () — Summer has started, but it's never too late to start thinking about next school year. Those at United Way of Acadiana are kicking off their 'Stuff the Bus' school supply drive. This drive makes sure families in need are given what they need to make the next school year a success. 'Families have a hard time making ends meet and buying school supplies can be an extra financial burden for them,' says Holly Cope-Lynn, Market and Communications Director for United Way of Acadiana. United Way of Acadiana collects these school supplies to hopefully provide some economic relief for both students and teachers in the area. 'Half of every household lives in economic hardship, so that's half of our students, half of our teachers,' says Cope-Lynn. Teachers are increasingly dipping into their own pockets to set their classrooms up for success. 'Teachers spends on average $800 a year in their own funds to buy these supplies for their classrooms,' adds Cope-Lynn. This school supply drive is a huge undertaking and United Way is reliant on both community help and volunteers. 'It takes hundreds of volunteer hours, it takes hundreds of volunteers,' says Cope-Lynn. 'There are multiple phases, everything from businesses signing up to be collection sites to people actually bringing in their items to donate.' Some of the items collected include paper, pens, pencils, crayons, folders, Kleenex, and hand-sanitizer. At this time, United Way of Acadiana is attempting to rally businesses to become drop-off locations for these items. They need businesses in Lafayette parish, but especially other parishes in their five-parish service zone, including Acadiana, Iberia, St. Martin, and Vermilion. 'We get the school supplies to those school districts, and we need businesses in those parishes to collect school supplies,' adds Cope-Lynn. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Eventually, at the end of the summer, when all these items are collected, they plan to fill up their entire warehouse. According to Cope-Lynn, this is not an impossible goal, especially with the success the drive saw last year. 'Last year, we collected more than $100,000 in value in school supplies,' says Cope-Lynn. 'That went to 500 teachers in our five parish areas and that helped 30,000 students and that is serious impact,' adds Cope-Lynn.
