Enzo Maresca ‘very proud' as Chelsea book last-eight berth
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was proud of his team after beating Benfica in extraordinary, weather-hit circumstances to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The Blues eventually ran out 4-1 winners after extra-time in a last-16 tie in Charlotte which was suspended for almost two hours due to a thunderstorm.
Chelsea had been just four minutes away from victory following Reece James's stunning free-kick when the players were taken off the field at the Bank of America Stadium.
Benfica benefited from the break and forced extra-time with a controversial Angel Di Maria penalty after play finally resumed.

The game swung back in Chelsea's favour after the Portuguese giants had Gianluca Prestianni sent off and Christopher Nkunku gave them a decisive lead. Breakaway goals from Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wrapped up the win.
Maresca told DAZN: 'I'm very proud. The performance for me was top until the last five minutes when they stopped the game, and when we restarted (it was) a completely a different game.
'When you are inside for more than one hour it's not easy but, 1-1, we continued to play and, at the end, I think the reward was one that we deserve.'
The players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break.
Maresca said: 'Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult.
'But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy.'
Chelsea will return to Philadelphia, where they played two group games, to face Brazilian side Palmeiras in the quarter-finals on Friday.
'Now we need to recover players, recover the energy and go again,' said Maresca.
Moises Caicedo delivered an influential performance but will miss the next game after being booked for a second time in the tournament.
Caicedo said of the team's prospects: 'We believe. We know this a tough tournament but, the thing is, we're working hard and doing well. At the end, we're going to see why we (are still) here.'
Reflecting on the weather delay, the Ecuadorian said: 'We were talking in the dressing room. The thing was (to stay) focused the whole game. I'm so happy because we did it.'

It's a joke – Enzo Maresca unhappy at long delay in Chelsea-Benfica tie
The tie took almost five hours to complete after the teams were forced inside, with the Blues 1-0 up with four minutes remaining thanks to Reece James' free-kick, due to 'the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium'. On the resumption, Angel Di Maria equalised with a controversial stoppage-time penalty to take the game to extra time, only for Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to seal Chelsea's win. Game started Saturday and ended Sunday 🤣 — Trevoh Chalobah (@TrevohChalobah) June 29, 2025 Maresca, in his press conference, said of the long delay: 'I think it's a joke, to be honest. 'It's not football, it's completely something new, I struggle to understand. 'I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition. 'It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero. 'We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games, there is some problems for me personally. Meanwhile, in the dressing room. — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 28, 2025 'I'm talking as a manager because when you're two hours inside and you have to try to keep them (the players) in the game, they're speaking to their families outside for safety reasons, they're eating, they're playing, they're laughing, how can you keep them inside focused for two hours? It's a joke.' One of Maresca's players at least was able to make light of the delay, which saw the game finish at 1.40am UK time, with defender Trevoh Chalobah posting on social media: 'Game started Saturday and ended Sunday'. Players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break and Maresca told broadcaster DAZN: 'Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult. 🚲⏳ — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 28, 2025 'But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy.' Gianluca Prestianni saw red for Bruno Lage's men in extra time for a second yellow card as Chelsea booked their place against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals. The Blues could now come up against Palmeiras' Stamford Bridge-bound Estevao Willian, whose side defeated fellow Brazilian club Botafogo on Saturday.

Lioness chef who cooked for Harry Kane and Lucy Bronze lifts lid on England menu
Jodie Smith started out pot washing in a family friend's local pub, now she cooks for football royalty including Harry Kane, Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh A chef who serves up dishes for the Lionesses has lifted the lid on the tasty treats England will need to fuel a Euros win. Jodie Smith, 35, Hertfordshire, has been a personal chef to Harry Kane and Lucy Bronze and is one of several chefs that the FA work with to serve the various England squads. Having started out in a pub kitchen, Jodie, who grew up a Chelsea fan, told the Mirror she 'never imagined' she would end up cooking for football royalty. "I was at Wembley and watched the Lionesses win the Euros in 2022, I never thought then that I would be cooking for players this big," she said. As well as private events, Jodie has worked with Southampton and Tottenham football clubs before a contact put her in touch with Harry Kane. She spent eight months with the England legend's family in Bayern Munich before returning home and landed a job cooking for England's youth squads. More recently Jodie was taken on as a personal chef for Lucy Bronze when she returned from Barcelona to join Chelsea, and has also worked with fellow Lioness, Keira Walsh. Speaking about the kind of food the team will have out in Switzerland, Jodie said: "It's very demanding on a tournament because you have to draw up menus for several weeks, while keeping it interesting and exciting. "You have to obviously try and include some delicacies from that country, so maybe they'll try cheese fondue at some point. I always say food is mood, because it can have such a huge impact. If the team has lost a game or had a bad result you can literally lift their mood with the right meal. "Of course it's nice to watch them come out and say 'have you seen what we've got for breakfast' and looking excited." In her time working as a football chef, Jodie has cooked up a whole host of post-match meals from burgers, to spaghetti bolognese, Katsu curry and poke bowls. The England squad have a team of nutritionists on hand alongside their chefs to ensure every meal is up to scratch and has the right balance of protein and carbs. But Jodie revealed the squad are allowed treats in moderation, and has made beetroot brownies and chocolate mousse made from yoghurt to give players a sweet fix without too much sugar. Fortunately for Jodie, Bronze, 33, appears to be the least fussy Lioness and recently revealed her teammates call her the 'garbage can' because she'll eat anything. She said: "I'm not scared of trying different foods. Lauren James always says don't ask Lucy if the dessert is nice because she will eat it anyway, if someone is eating something they don't want to finish everyone says 'Lucy will have it'. "When I lived in Leon I did eat fried frogs' legs, I actually quite liked them. "In Spain, when they cook gambas, the giant prawns in paella you're meant to cut the heads off and suck the brains out because that's the best bit, it has the most flavour. I do that all the time now." But opening up about her eating habits, Ella Toone admitted she is less impressed with camp England's dessert selection. The 25-year-old striker said: "In England camp and when you're away with football, before a game you usually have a dessert but they're usually apple crumble or rice pudding… they are the worst two desserts in the world, rice pudding I can't even look at it."

Joao Pedro chooses next club after Chelsea and Newcastle transfer offers
Brighton forward Joao Pedro has reportedly chosen his next club after receiving transfer offers from Chelsea and Newcastle United. Pedro has enjoyed two productive seasons on the south coast, scoring 30 goals in all competitions. The 23-year-old has become a key player for Brighton since being signed from Championship side Watford in 2023. Pedro's form has caught the eye of several clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle already submitting offers to Brighton. Brighton rejected a £50m bid from Newcastle last week before rebuffing a £58m proposal from Chelsea on Saturday. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Talks between the clubs are still ongoing with Brighton demanding at least £60m to sell the Brazil international. Newcastle's interest is long-standing but Pedro is currently 'leaning towards a move to Chelsea', according to the Daily Mail. Both Chelsea and Newcastle can offer Pedro Champions League football after they finished fourth and fifth respectively last season. One reason Pedro could be tempted to reject Newcastle in favour of Chelsea is the fact he wants to remain a first-choice striker. There is little chance of the Brazilian displacing one of the best strikers in the world in Alexander Isak, unless of course he leaves St James' Park this summer. A host of clubs are admirers of Isak but he is expected to stay put, with Newcastle valuing him at over £125m. Chelsea have already signed one striker this summer after Liam Delap completed a £30m deal from Ipswich Town. But Pedro could fancy his chances of replacing Delap and Nicolas Jackson in the Chelsea team given the former's inexperience and the latter's underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Ex-Premier League and Germany midfielder Didi Hamann understands Newcastle's interest in Pedro. 'Joao Pedro would be a smart signing for Newcastle, but it just depends on if he is happy playing back-up, which is a big if,' he said earlier this month. More Trending 'I think he's a very capable player and has done really well for Brighton, but he might see Newcastle and think that eventually he could replace Alexander Isak having already won the fans over by scoring off the bench or whenever he gets his chances. 'If they don't challenge for the Premier League or Champions League next season then Isak might want to leave. 'But Newcastle do need to kick on so it would be a good signing, they need to consolidate after winning a trophy and getting back into the Champions League. 'They need to pick things up because in the Premier League, overall, it was a bit disappointing at times last season.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
