Amid name row with Bengal, Odisha launches ‘Jagannath Dham' app for Puri shrine visitors
Bhubaneswar: Govt on Friday launched an official mobile application titled 'Shree Jagannatha Dham' for the Jagannath Temple, a move that comes amid the ongoing debate over the Digha shrine's nomenclature.
"The application provides information about ritual schedules, queue waiting duration, Rath Yatra preparations and other special events. Additional functionalities are being developed and will be added in future updates," Puri district collector Siddharth Shankar Swain told TOI.
He explained that selecting 'Jagannath Dham' as the application's name reflects the sentiments of Jagannath devotees, who consider Puri as the original 'Jagannath dham' among the 'char dhams' in India.
"The application's name was chosen because Puri represents the genuine Jagannath dham," Swain said.
A controversy had erupted on April 30 when West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had designated the newly-constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha as 'Jagannath Dham', drawing sharp criticism from various quarters, particularly from Odisha.
Regarding the timing of the launch, he highlighted the upcoming Rath Yatra celebration on June 27.
According to the district collector, the application will continue to operate beyond Rath Yatra festival, with additional features planned specifically for the event. Users can locate public facilities, temples and navigate different routes to their desired destinations.
"During other times, the application will serve as a tourist guide in Puri, providing information about daily ritual timings, darshan schedules, Mahaprasad availability, and donation procedures at the shrine. Users can also find nearby religious sites, accommodation options and other facilities through the application. We will include a grievance redressal feature soon," Swain said.

UP: Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amid tight security
Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. After offering namaaz, prayers were made for the safety of the jawans posted at the borders and safeguarding the country. In a video message, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, on Saturday, reminded the Muslim community to follow the advisory issued by the Islamic Centre of India and sacrifice only those animals on which there are no bans, adding that sacrifice should take place at the designated spots." "The blood of the sacrificed animal should not be released in drains, and the waste should be disposed of as per the arrangements made by the Municipal Corporation. After offering namaaz, one should pray for the development and safety of the nation and also for the Army jawans safeguarding our borders," he said. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Meetings were held with religious leaders, peace committees, civil defence personnel and prominent citizens, in coordination with local magistrates and other relevant departments, to foster coordination and dialogue. Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

Indian students made up one in four international students in US in 2024: ICE report
Indian students accounted for nearly 27% of all international students in the United States in 2024, according to the latest report by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report, titled SEVIS by the Numbers 2024, shows that 4.2 lakh Indian students were actively enrolled in the US, marking an 11.8% increase from 2023. This growth helped push the total number of foreign students in the US to 15.8 lakh — a 5.3% rise over the previous year. As per a report by Lubna Kably in the Times of India, the data comes from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a tool used by the US Department of Homeland Security to track foreign students. F-1 visas are issued for academic programs, while M-1 visas are used for vocational training. Asia remained the largest source region, with nearly 11 lakh students — making up 72% of the total foreign student population. India and China were the two top source countries. While Indian student numbers rose sharply, China saw a slight decline of 0.25%, with 3.2 lakh students in 2024. The ICE report highlights that more than 90% of foreign students — about 14.3 lakh — were enrolled in higher education degree programs. California and New York were the top destinations for international students, hosting 2.37 lakh and 1.72 lakh students respectively. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) However, new data for the March 2024 to March 2025 period suggests a sharp reversal in trend. Chris R. Glass, a professor at Boston College, studied SEVIS data and reported an 11.3% drop in total active international student records. The number fell from 11.53 lakh in March 2024 to 10.22 lakh in March 2025. In contrast, Chinese student numbers rose slightly to 2.63 lakh, an increase of 3.28%. Glass said, 'The current year-over-year decline is a reflection of an enrollment cycle that began under the Biden administration, so the March 2025 numbers have yet to reflect any impacts of policies implemented under the second Trump administration.' Experts point to several reasons for the recent fall in Indian student numbers — including the arbitrary termination of F-1 visas and SEVIS records, legal uncertainties, delays in consular services due to planned social media scrutiny rules, doubts about the continuation of the STEM-OPT program, and widespread layoffs in the US job market. These factors could push student numbers further down in 2026. Despite recent declines, Indian students continue to lead in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students received a two-year STEM OPT extension after graduation. Of these, 48% were Indian students and 20.4% were Chinese. About 1.94 lakh international students in 2024 had employment authorization and were working in the US under the OPT program, a 21.1% rise from 2023. These figures reflect both the growing interest of Indian students in the US and the challenges they now face amid changing visa policies and immigration uncertainties. Bengaluru Stampede: Police officer says CM's office ordered to go ahead with RCB's IPL win celebration despite risks
The suspension of Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda and four senior officers has triggered widespread anger within the police force. Officers across ranks—from constables to inspectors—say they feel betrayed by the government they serve, calling the action unprecedented and demoralising, ToI reported. A police inspector said such suspensions were unheard of in Indian policing, particularly under these circumstances. 'The chief minister's office instructed him (Dayananda) to proceed with full arrangements regardless of the risks. If accountability must be fixed, it should start with those in the govt,' he told ToI, pointing to the direct involvement of the state leadership in organising the Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory celebrations . The backlash reached the gates of power on Thursday when head constable Narasimharaju from Madiwala police station staged a lone protest in front of Raj Bhavan. He was detained by police, taken to the Vidhana Soudha police station, and released after giving an apology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 허리통증에 다리가 저리다면 지금 늦지 않았습니다! 비수술로 치료 가능합니다!! ort02a_강남정형외과병원 지금 문의 Undo An assistant sub-inspector from the central division described the suspensions as politically motivated. 'There is video proof of deputy CM DK Shivakumar waving the RCB flag and welcoming the team. They wanted to take credit, and now they've made scapegoats of hardworking officers. It's demoralising,' he said. A senior inspector added that Dayananda had been against holding a ceremony at Vidhana Soudha and had recommended keeping it confined to the stadium. 'The police commissioner was against holding a function at Vidhana Soudha. He had pushed for hosting it only at the stadium, but the CM's office insisted on going ahead. We're being punished for following orders,' he said. 'We work round the clock, sacrificing family time. And this is what we get!' Live Events The sentiment was echoed across police ranks, with growing criticism not just of the elected leadership but also of senior bureaucrats. Police personnel said the chief secretary and other IAS officers were equally culpable for 'throwing caution to the wind.' Many in the force credited Dayananda with improving the city's safety and questioned why he was being held responsible for what they believe was a failure of political judgement. 'He should not have been punished for a disaster that, they claim, speaks more about the political establishment's greed to bask in the glory of the IPL champions than any real policing lapse,' said one officer. A head constable from the south-east division described the exhausting shifts since the IPL final. 'We barely had any rest. Yet, by afternoon on June 4, we were told to again report for duty near the stadium [Chinnaswamy]. And now, they're targeting the commissioner who stood by us!' (with inputs from ToI)
