Once the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu's rapid fall within the MK Party has raised eyebrows, particularly as internal disputes and allegations mount.

Less than a year after joining the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and rising to become its Secretary General, Floyd has been relieved of his SG duties. The party said Shivambu would be sent to Parliament, but not as Chief Whip or in any senior parliamentary role, but as an ordinary Member of Parliament (MP).
The party confirmed the decision during a media briefing in Durban on Tuesday afternoon.MK's national organiser, Nathi Nhleko, announced the 'redeployment', saying it was a collective decision of the party's national officials.
'The national officials have come to a decision to redeploy Commander Floyd Shivambu as the secretary general of the party, and redeploy him to the National Assembly,' Nhleko said. The move comes amid growing tensions within the MK Party ranks.
The position of Chief Whip was filled last week by Colleen Makhubele, leaving Shivambu's reassignment widely viewed as a political downgrade. Once the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Shivambu's rapid fall within the MK Party has raised eyebrows, particularly as internal disputes and allegations mount.
Shivambu is accused by some party members of undermining former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who serves as the party's provincial leader in Mpumalanga. Insiders allege that he withheld financial support from the province and failed to firmly back Mkhwebane, who was placed in her leadership position by party president Jacob Zuma.
The Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has expelled its Mpumalanga leader, Mary Phadi, accusing her of defying party processes by challenging her 2024 expulsion in court and organising an unauthorised factional meeting.
In a letter dated February 27, 2025, MKP secretary-general Floyd Shivambu informed Phadi that her membership was cancelled with immediate effect. Phadi has, however, continued to hold the party, declaring herself the provincial leader.
Zuma is said to be unhappy with Shivambu's handling of the situation, and that the situation has caused the party 'great embarrassment'
Tensions have further escalated following Shivambu's controversial Easter weekend visit to the church of televangelist Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi.
The visit sparked strong condemnation from both the MK Party and South Africa's Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, with officials calling it 'a blatant act of disrespect towards South Africa's legal system.'Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fled South Africa in 2020 while out on bail on charges including fraud and money laundering.
Despite the backlash, Shivambu has stood by his decision to visit Bushiri, insisting it was a personal spiritual choice.
'One thing I will never apologise for is when I went to see Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and he said, 'Let's go to church.' I said, 'I'll go to church,'' he told a TV news station in a recent interview.
'Going to religious institutions is a personal choice for anyone. I go to many religious institutions, including those whose faith I don't associate with, for different reasons. We have to listen to different people,' he added.
The MK Party has formally distanced itself from the visit, stating it was not sanctioned by the leadership.
However, Shivambu maintains he keeps Zuma informed. 'There is nothing I do without informing the president,' he said.

Image: Supplied As speculations gather momentum on who the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) supreme commander Jacob Zuma was considering to appoint as the new party Secretary-General following the axing of Floyd Shivambu, Phumlani Mfeka has emerged as the front runner for the position. The position became vacant after the party axed Shivambu on Tuesday following his unsanctioned trip to Malawi, where he attended a church service of a fugitive pastor, Shepherd Bushiri, who skipped bail in South Africa in 2020. Mfeka, the leader of socio-economic group Injeje yaBenguni, which advocates for African nationalism, was expected to hold a meeting with Zuma in Durban on Thursday. Sources within the party said the discussion will be followed by Mfeka's announcement as the new Secretary-General. Mfeka commands a lot of support from traditional leaders, something that Zuma regards as an important constituency for his party. Mfeka confirmed earlier on Thursday that he would meet Zuma in Durban but refused to be drawn on what they would discuss in their meeting, saying it was a private meeting between himself and the party leader. Mfeka's name had always been mentioned as a possible successor to Shivambu after rumours of his (Shivambu's) future in the position started circulating. The rumours were fueled by Shivambu's fallout with Zuma's daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who publicly insulted him and questioned his leadership, as well as Mfeka himself, who, when resigning as both a party member and a member in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, cited issues with Shivambu as one of the reasons. Other names that emerged on Tuesday after Shivambu's fall were former ActionSA member and founder of Xiluba Party, Bongani Baloyi, who joined the MKP in September last year, and Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane. However, sources in the party said Zuma will opt for Mfeka because of his support among traditional leaders and traditionalists, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, which is the party's stronghold. It is believed that Zuma convinced Mfeka to return to the MK Party because he (Zuma) felt he needed Mfeka and his constituency in the party. Mfeka has been Zuma's strong backer before the founding of the MK Party and immediately joined after it was launched in 2023. He was on the national list to parliament during last year's general elections, however, he was deployed to serve in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and sat in various portfolio committees. He was among the dissenting voices within the party who were unhappy that senior positions were given to the newcomers while overlooking the founding members. If Mfeka gets appointed, he will be the fourth person to hold the secretary-general position in the party after Arthur Zwane, Sihle Ngubane, and Shivambu. [email protected].

Morero said the team will focus on addressing 'crime and grime,' lawlessness, service delivery bottlenecks, and fast-tracking municipal turnaround efforts. He insisted the initiative does not reflect an inability on his part to govern effectively, and blamed the city's decline on previous administrations. 'It's not a thing that is acknowledged in the decline that has happened in the city since 2016, and now we want to arrest and change this,' Morero said. He said the city needs at least three financial experts to help turn around its finances, addressing issues such as overspending and budget inefficiencies. 'That is why we believe this team will give the necessary support to the current executives who do accept that, yes, there are inefficiencies,' he told the media. 'I also had a meeting with the executives to introduce the Bomb Squad, which was widely received.' Morero said the mayoral committee supports the initiative and has even proposed additional names. 'They've made other recommendations with the collective ownership of the mayoral committee. It's not a duplication, it's a support mechanism where there are gaps and weaknesses,' he said. He added that while there is no timeline for the 'Bomb Squad,' they hope to see major progress within the next year. He said he aims to leave a financial surplus of R5 billion by June 2026. 'We want to grow the economy of the city by another 1% to 3% in the next five years,' Morero said. 'It requires that those focusing on economic growth help us implement policies to achieve that goal.' He emphasised that the team's mandate is to support, not replace existing city departments and enhance service delivery. The team was officially announced on Thursday at the Soweto Hotel in Kliptown by City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero. Addressing the media, Morero said the unit will focus on combating 'crime and grime,' lawlessness, and service delivery bottlenecks, and to fast-track municipal turnaround efforts. 'Business intelligence gathering will be at the core of the Bomb Squad's work,' Morero said. 'This will be executed by holding meetings with relevant authorities to isolate areas vulnerable to land and building invasions and propose proactive interventions.' According to Morero, the team's key objectives include activating rapid response teams in identified service delivery hotspots, acting as the eyes and ears of the executive mayor, and enabling swift interventions to address lawlessness. The initiative comes as the metro is battling with challenges, including hijacked buildings, chronic water shortages, rolling power outages, pothole-riddled roads, broken traffic lights, rampant crime, and widespread municipal corruption.
