India's Aditya-L1 solar probe watches powerful flare erupt from the sun

India's first sun-studying spacecraft, Aditya-L1, has captured one of our star's fiery outbursts in new detail.
From its vantage point about 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, Aditya-L1 gets an uninterrupted view of our sun, allowing the probe to observe solar flares as they're unleashed, as well as other activities that can affect space weather.
Solar flares occur in regions where the sun's magnetic fields become tangled, appearing as sudden, bright bursts that can last from several minutes to hours. The suite of seven science instruments onboard Aditya-L1 work together to detect and analyze these flares across a range of wavelengths, providing scientists with a more complete picture of how the sun's energy propagates through different layers of the star.
Among these instruments is the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, or SUIT, which observed the flare on Feb. 22 of last year. The flare, classified as X6.3 — one of the strongest categories of solar eruptions — emerged from the active region NOAA 13590, which had appeared just days earlier on the sun's Earth-facing side.

SUIT observed a brightening in the near-ultraviolet wavelength range of 200 to 400 nanometers, which had never been seen before as there were no dedicated space telescopes focused on this wavelength range, according to a Feb. 28 statement by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which operates Aditya-L1.
By combining data from the SUIT instrument with observations from the probe's onboard spectrometer SoLEXS (Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer), scientists concluded that the brightening in the sun's lower atmosphere due to the flare was directly linked to a rise in temperature in the outer corona.
This confirmed that the energy released by the solar flare propagated through the different layers of the sun's atmosphere, according to a paper describing the observations, which was published Feb. 28 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
"It is a great stroke of luck that Aditya-L1 was able to witness such a strong flare right at the beginning of its research career," study co-author Sami Solanki, director of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, said in another statement.

Two more spacecraft — NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter — as well as unspecified Earth-based telescopes also observed the event, according to the statement.
"Together with observations from other probes and telescopes, this for the first time provides a complete picture of the processes that occur in different layers of the solar atmosphere during a flare," Solanki said.

I remember the first time I ever caught the Northern Lights on camera – I was photographing the night sky when I was startled to see a pale green 'cloud' on the back of the camera that I couldn't see with my eyes. But NASA astronaut Jonny Kim recently shared his first-ever attempt at taking a time-lapse – and it's quite impressive. The timelapse, shared on the astronaut's social media pages, shows a time-lapse of Earth taken from the International Space Station. The sped-up video starts with city lights and even some flashes of lightning seen from space, but ends with colorful wisps dancing over Southeast Asia and Australia as the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights makes an appearance at the end of the timelapse. Kim notes in the post that he's never shot a time-lapse before, but took some tips from 'Vapor,' Nichole Ayes, a fellow NASA astronaut also aboard the ISS. 'After seeing the result, I told her this felt like fishing,' Kim wrote. 'Prepping the camera, the angle, the settings, the mount, then setting your timer and coming back to hope you got a catch. And after catching my first fish, I think I'm hooked.' As someone who has spent many sleepless nights trying to catch the aurora on camera, I agree with the comparison. Sometimes, I leave with nothing but a few photos of stars. Other times, I leave with some of my favorite landscape images that I've ever taken (plus an adrenaline rush from the chase). Kim arrived on the ISS on April 8 and is expected to spend around eight months aboard. A time-lapse is a series of still images taken at regular intervals, stitched together into a video. The result is a sped-up video, sort of like the opposite of a slow-motion video. (A few commenters missed this fact; the Earth actually isn't spinning as fast as it appears to be in the video.) One of the most common mistakes creatives make when taking their first time lapse is not taking enough shots and ending up with a too short video. A tripod is also a must. An asteroid that burst onto the scene with an unusually high risk of striking Earth has just had its collision risk upgraded. In February 2025, asteroid 2024 YR4's maximum collision risk with our homeworld when it swoops back around in 2032 was projected to be 3.1 percent. Now its collision risk has risen to 4.3 percent – not with Earth, but the Moon. That's not particularly high, sure. But it's high enough to be pretty exciting. This impact wouldn't destroy the Moon or even affect its orbit; but it would be scientifically interesting to see the formation process of a large crater (and also really cool). 2024 YR4 announced itself with a bang. Initial calculations of its trajectory found that it could collide with Earth in December 2032. The risk wasn't huge, but 3.1 percent is still alarmingly high for an event that could wipe out a city – the chunk of rock measures between 53 and 67 meters (174 and 220 feet), comparable to the size of the asteroid that devastated Tunguska in 1908. Thankfully, it didn't take long for that risk to be downgraded to less than a fraction of a fraction of a percent, effectively ruling out the possibility of an Earth-2024 YR4 collision entirely. The Moon, however, remained in the firing line, with a collision risk of 3.8 percent. Now, using new JWST observations obtained in May 2025, astronomers led by Andy Rivkin of Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory have refined that calculation, bumping the risk to 4.3 percent. That's probably still not the final word on the matter; tracing an asteroid's trajectory takes repeated observations, and 2024 YR4 is now too far away for us to see. It comes around close to Earth every four years, so astronomers are going to have another opportunity to observe it closely in December 2028. Axiom-4 mission launch scrubbed as SpaceX detects leak in Falcon 9 rocket

June 10 (UPI) -- The Axiom-4 mission launch, the fourth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, was canceled for a second time Tuesday after SpaceX detected a liquid oxygen leak in its Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX announced Tuesday night in a post on X that it was "standing down" from Wednesday's launch of Axiom-4. "Standing down from tomorrow's Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the space station to allow additional time for SpaceX teams to repair the LOx leak identified during post static fire booster inspections." "Once complete -- and pending Range availability -- we will share a new launch date." SpaceX scrubbed the first liftoff scheduled for Tuesday morning, due to high winds at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Falcon 9 was rescheduled to launch Axiom-4 at 8 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, with a backup window available at 7:37 a.m. Thursday. Axiom Space, which is based in Houston, is building the first commercial space station, which is scheduled to deploy sometime before 2030. The four astronauts, who make up the mission, include Peggy Whitson, 65, a former NASA astronaut and director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space. Whitson will command the commercial mission. Shubhanshu Shukla with the Indian Space Research Organization will pilot. Mission specialists with the European Space Agency include Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary. The Axiom-4 mission is scheduled to last 14 days, as the crew conducts 60 science experiments and demonstrations "focused on human research, Earth observation and life, biological and material sciences," according to SpaceX. The Axiom-3 mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 18, 2024, for the first commercial spaceflight of European citizens.
