According to Anderson, despite the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the India-England series is going to be exactly the same as fans had expected.
Legendary England fast bowler James Anderson has made a bold prediction ahead of the start of the five-match Test series between India and England. England will host India in five red-ball matches. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24, and the next four matches will be played in Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester and The Oval, respectively.
Shubman Gill will lead India in the first series of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, but there will be no Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli for Team India. The legendary duo announced their retirements from Test cricket last month.
According to Anderson, India have put together a 'strong squad" for the series despite Kohli and Rohit's retirements.
'This series is going to be exactly the same as you'd expect. I know India are going through a little bit of change with a new captain (Shubman Gill) and losing (Virat) Kohli and (Rohit) Sharma, but I still think they've got a strong squad with some really exciting players," Anderson told ESPN Cricinfo.
'England obviously are trying to play a certain way. It lends itself to a really exciting series," he added.
In the absence of Rohit, KL Rahul is all set to play as an opener in five Tests against England, and Shubman in all likelihood will bat at No. 4 for the Indian team. His Gujarat Titans teammate B Sai Sudharsan is tipped to make his Test debut as a No. 3 batter and maintain his red-hot IPL 2025 form in England as well.
The left-handed batter from Tamil Nadu amassed a total of 759 runs in 15 matches of IPL 2025 for GT and won the Orange Cap along with the Emerging Player of the award.
Apart from Sudharsan, Karun Nair is back in the Indian Test team after more than eight years. The right-handed batter from Vidarbha, who has a triple century to his name in Test cricket against the Poms, made a case for his selection in India's playing XI of the first Test by scoring a double century for India A in the first unofficial Test played against England Lions from May 30 to June 2.
