Ex Atalanta & Juventus Defender Reveals: ‘I Was Close To Joining Inter Milan & AC Milan'
Former Atalanta defender Merih Demiral has revealed that he was close to joining Inter Milan and AC Milan from La Dea.
The Turkish international recalled that he nearly transferred to one of the two clubs speaking to Gianlucadimarzio.com.
Merih Demiral spent a few years playing in Serie A.
The Turk played for Sassuolo, where his performances earned him a move to Juventus.
Demiral never quite nailed down a starting spot for himself at the Bianconeri, however. Therefore, he ended up heading to Atalanta.
And it was in Bergamo that Demiral really became a top-rated defender in Serie A.
Demiral thrived playing in the centre of a back three under Gian Piero Gasperini. His physicality allowed him to defend large spaces and patrol the penalty area.
But behind the scenes, Merih Demiral fell out with Atalanta coach Gasperini.
Therefore, the Turk left to join Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2023. He was one of a number of big names from Europe, and Serie A in particular, to head to Saudi Arabia.
However, there was no lack of interest in Demiral's interest in Europe.
And in particular in Serie A, there were clubs who wanted to sign Demiral on the basis of his form for Atalanta.
Demiral revealed that 'I was close to Milan, and also to Inter.'
'But nothing came of it. Because Atalanta preferred not to sell me.'
Meanwhile, Demiral wasn't ruling out a return to Serie A. 'Let's see what happens,' said the 27-year-old. 'In football you never know what will happen.'
Demiral said that 'I learned a lot' playing in Serie A.
'It was very important for my career.'
'I still follow the league,' Demiral said. 'Particularly because my compatriots Calhanoglu and Yildiz are playing there.'

Inter Milan Ask New Coach Cristian Chivu For Three Key Things
Inter Milan Ask New Coach Cristian Chivu For Three Key Things Inter Milan have asked their new coach Cristian Chivu for three key things in his first season in charge of the team. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, report that the Nerazzurri report that the Nerazzurri want a return to winning ways, a mental recovery, and a greater focus on youth. Advertisement Inter Milan are on the verge of appointing Cristian Chivu as their new coach. The 44-year-old will reportedly terminate his contract with Parma tomorrow, and then take the reins from Simone Inzaghi. Chivu is not a coach with much senior experience: just thirteen matches at Parma. However, beyond his work at the Gialloblu, Inter trust Chivu on the basis of his time coaching their youth ranks. (Photo by) And according to the Corriere dello Sport, there are three things Inter have asked from Chivu. Naturally, the first would be a return to winning trophies. Last season, Inter were in the hunt for major silverware right until the end of the season. However, they faltered at the last hurdle and ended the campaign empty-handed. Advertisement Therefore, next time out, Inter expect to end the season with something fresh in their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, the Corriere dello Sport notes, Inter will have to bounce back from an absolutely devastating end to last season. The Nerazzurri suffered a shocking 5-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. And that came just a week after they narrowly lost out on the Serie A title. That end to the campaign has clearly mentally devastated Inter. Therefore, the club want Chivu to change the atmosphere and get the team back on track mentally. Lastly, the Corrirere report, Inter expect more of a focus on youth from Chivu.
