Mayor faces backlash from Umkhanyakude Youth League over arrogance and funding issues

The newly-elected ANC Youth League regional leadership in Umkhanyakude, north-east of KwaZulu-Natal, has accused the district Mayor Simphile Mdaka of arrogance and refusing to recognise them as the new leadership of the youth league.
Since it was elected in March, the youth league said it has been trying to set up a meeting with Mdaka, who is also the ANC regional chairperson, however, the mayor has been ignoring them.

The league's regional secretary, Makhosonke Maphanga, said the league is disappointed at the mayor's conduct, accusing him of behaving like an opposition while he is a leader of the ANC.
Maphanga said that as the regional secretary, he has sent several letters to the mayor and the municipality leadership requesting a meeting, but to date, the league's pleas have been ignored.
He said the only time the mayor responded to them was when he asked them to meet him at the funeral of a car accident victims, saying to show respect, the youth league chairperson attended, despite not understanding the nature of a meeting at a funeral.
He said after the funeral, the mayor got in his car and left without talking to the youth league chairperson.
Maphanga said the league wanted to raise several issues affecting young people in the region, including the municipality's shocking decision to allocate R50,000 to the youth programmes in his office in the current financial year.
'Since 2021, the young people have been complaining about the lack of funding for youth programmes under the mayor's leadership because of a poorly funded youth office, which has been allocated only R50,000. It is absurd that any right-thinking mayor can expect that R50,000 will champion youth development for five years. Which municipalities have done this? This is clear sabotage of youth development by an ANC mayor,' said Maphanga.
He said the youth have identified tourism and agriculture as the sectors where they can find job opportunities. In their meeting with the mayor, they wanted to ask for money to organise training for the youth as waiters and waitresses in hotels and particularly in the Mfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserve, which is the second biggest game reserve in the country.
'As disciplined members of the ANC, we have followed all the necessary protocols to raise the issues internally, however, we have been ignored. Now we do not know what to do, but we are hoping the provincial leadership of the ANC will rein in this arrogant mayor,' said Maphanga.
Mayor Mdaka did not respond to the questions sent to him on Wednesday; however, the ANC provincial spokesperson, Fanle Sibisi, urged the youth league to utilise internal platforms.

The team was officially announced on Thursday at the Soweto Hotel in Kliptown by City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero. Addressing the media, Morero said the unit will focus on combating 'crime and grime,' lawlessness, and service delivery bottlenecks, and to fast-track municipal turnaround efforts. 'Business intelligence gathering will be at the core of the Bomb Squad's work,' Morero said. 'This will be executed by holding meetings with relevant authorities to isolate areas vulnerable to land and building invasions and propose proactive interventions.' According to Morero, the team's key objectives include activating rapid response teams in identified service delivery hotspots, acting as the eyes and ears of the executive mayor, and enabling swift interventions to address lawlessness. The initiative comes as the metro is battling with challenges, including hijacked buildings, chronic water shortages, rolling power outages, pothole-riddled roads, broken traffic lights, rampant crime, and widespread municipal corruption. Residents have repeatedly voiced frustration over the city's inability to address these persistent issues. During his State of the City Address in May, Morero first announced the formation of the Bomb Squad, which is to be led by ANC Veterans League president Dr. Snuki Zikalala. He said the team's mandate is to identify key problem areas and support city departments in delivering effective services. The 'Bomb Squad' includes several high-profile figures, including former city managers and executives such as Blake Mosley-Lefatole, Mavela Dlamini, and Professor Trevor Fowler. Gerald Dumas, a former chief operations officer, also joins the team, alongside Reggie Boqo, the city's former group chief finance officer. Philisiwe Twala-Tau will represent SALGA with a focus on enforcing good governance principles, while Vicky Shuping, an advisor to the mayor, will coordinate service delivery and urban management efforts. Principal Busani Ngwani, from the National School of Governance and a member of the Group Performance Audit Committee, will focus on governance improvements. In addition to the team are Dr. Kwezi Mabasa, from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and EFF senior researcher Dr. Gumani Tshimomola, both of whom will contribute to economic development strategies, Morero said. Audrey Mothupi, CEO of Systemic Logic Group, will manage partnerships with the private sector. Morero said most of the team members are already employed in Johannesburg or in other municipalities and are volunteering their services. He told the media that only Zikalala will receive a salary.

Gareth Cliff has continued his longstanding social media feud with Fikile Mbalula with another shady post. 'I never run away from accountability' : Gayton McKenzie defends absence from committee meetings

The Minister is currently undertaking an official visit to Brazil. "I never run away from accountability," he said in a post on social media where he explained his absence from recent meetings. "All the Ministers of BRICS meet once a year to agree on the work, plans and collaboration that governs our partnership," he said. The Minister explained that he had instructed his team to attend meetings while he met with his counterparts from the UAE, Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, China, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt and India. "We agreed on the way forward and signed the document and also held bilaterals with some Ministers. I shall appear on June 10 to answer whichever allegations or correction but I could simply not miss this meeting. Next Stay Close ✕ McKenzie has been slammed for failing to attend recent meetings including a briefing this week on the South African Football Association's (SAFA) 2023/24 annual report, which covered audited financial statements and governance issues. Other members of the portfolio committee were present, including SAFA President Danny Jordaan, who was grilled by DA's Liam Jacobs over his leadership and travel expenses. However, McKenzie and his deputy, Peace Mabe, were absent. An apology was read to the committee, explaining that McKenzie was on an official visit to Brazil, while Mabe was attending the Select Committee on Education, Science and Innovation. However, the explanation did not satisfy several members, who expressed growing concern over what they described as a pattern of absence. One of those who voiced frustration was ANC MP Gaolatlhe Kgabo. 'I think this is the fifth meeting, if not the sixth, where the minister is not attending.' Kgabo said McKenzie's continued absence has become the norm and undermines the committee's work. 'To a large extent, the minister has concluded that he is not going to account to this portfolio committee,' he said. 'In the last meeting, we resolved that the minister must be summoned to appear before the committee. It's for that reason I raise the matter of his unavailability again.' He said the apology should be rejected and that the committee must produce a report on what has been done to follow through on summoning the minister. Kgabo also accused McKenzie of avoiding official platforms and opting instead to respond to committee matters through social media. 'But the minister would rather run to X (formerly Twitter) or other social networking platforms to rebut the views raised in the proper forum, this portfolio committee,' he said. 'This matter cannot be taken lightly. We are not running a social media government seeking likes,' Meanwhile, Committee Chairperson Joe McGluwa agreed and said the apology was insufficient. 'I think this applies to the deputy minister as well. It's about time she comes to a meeting and clarifies her designated area of responsibility,' he said. 'Whether it's sport, arts, culture, whatever the case may be, we cannot proceed in this fashion. The apology must be recorded as unsatisfactory.' EFF MP Eugene Mthethwa also raised concern. 'Any organisation knows that if you are an executive and you miss three consecutive meetings, you're removed. This must apply here,' he said. He urged the committee to develop a formal policy on ministerial appearances. 'We cannot keep addressing this in bits and pieces. Let us note that we do not accept the minister's apology,' Mthethwa added. McGluwa repeated that McKenzie's continued absence was unacceptable, especially when important decisions were on the table. 'The minister is accountable to Parliament. There are matters only he can answer,' McGluwa said. He referenced the National Sports and Recreation Act, which states that every sports body must submit annual reports to both the department and Parliament. 'In the future, when federations appear before us, we may proceed without the ministry present. We are wasting our time because of their absenteeism,' he said. McGluwa also criticised the trend of McKenzie acting independently of the committee, citing the dissolution of entities like SILAPA without briefing Parliament. He also expressed concern over the ongoing delays in filling senior departmental posts. 'In October 2024, we were told by the minister that the Director-General would be appointed by November. It's June 2025, and key posts remain vacant,' he said.
