Mining: Cornwall to host international competition
Cornwall has been chosen to host an international mining competition. The 47th International Mining Games is set to take place over two days at the King Edward Mine Museum in Troon, near Camborne.The competition consists of seven events including jackleg drilling, hand drilling and gold panning.Trustee Carol Richards said the competition "celebrates Cornwall's mining industry".
The museum is due to welcome 45 teams from across the globe including Australia, the USA, Canada and Germany.A Cornish team, consisting of students and alumni from the Camborne School of Mines, will also compete.The women's and co-ed competition will take place on Friday 21 March with the men's and alumni competition happening on Saturday 22 March, between 8:00 and 16:00 GMT.The county previously hosted the event in 2012 at the King Edward Mine.
The tournament was created in 1978 in memory of 91 miners who died in the Sunshine Mine disaster in the USA in 1972, the King Edward Mine Museum said.It said it most recently took place in Montana in the USA, in 2024.Ms Richards said the museum was "delighted to be hosting the event"She added: "It chimes with our twin aims of celebrating Cornwall's mining industry in ways that increase knowledge and ignite curiosity among people of all ages and backgrounds, and of promoting education in geoscience, geology and mining".Ms Richards said there was "no better place" to spark an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) than at the museum.

This massive blow to London commuters comes after the fleet was revealed to be the first 'deep level' Tube trains to be air conditioned. The eagerly-awaited fleet, which consists of 94 trains, will offer 10% more capacity as well as wider doors for quicker boarding, walk through carriages, and CCTV. They will replace an 'age expired' fleet of older Piccadilly line trains which dates to 1973. The update will enable peak-hour frequencies to be increased from 24 to 27 trains an hour, and will eventually see 36 trains running each hour, equivalent to the Victoria line. Transport for London (TFL) originally announced the first new Piccadilly line train would enter passenger service by the end of 2025. However, TfL publicly confirm on Friday, June 20 that the new trains are now not expected until the 'second half of 2026'. This delay has been caused by unexpected difficulties in introducing the first new train to challenging 'real life' conditions on London Underground infrastructure. The new trains are understood to have performed well on the test track. While first batch of trains are being built by Siemens in Vienna, Austria, the bulk of the order will be assembled at Siemens' new factory in Goole, east Yorkshire. TfL confirmed on Friday that 'the start of a rigorous programme of testing the interactions with the infrastructure and systems is delayed until the summer'. Part or full closures of the Piccadilly line will continue over the weekends to prepare the stations for the new nine-carriage trains. Stuart Harvey, TfL's chief capital officer, who is in charge of the introduction of the new trains, spoke on the latest update. 'It will obviously be disappointing for customers that they will have to wait a bit longer for the new trains, and I regret that," he said. The route from St Erth to St Ives only stops at Carbis Bay en route to its final destination, but the views out the window for the whole journey are pretty spectacular. Another highlight of the journey is that St Ives station is situated right next to Porthminster beach, meaning the sand and sea can be accessed almost immediately. Meanwhile, the station is less than a ten minute walk into town, where the harbour, shops, galleries and pubs can be explored. Durham to Edinburgh - Another train route that people in the UK love is the East Coast train line between Durham and Edinburgh, with coastal views and city landscapes among the sights that can be seen out the window. Newcastle, Berwick, Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral are all among the highlights on that route. 'But I would like to assure Londoners and visitors to our city that we are working extremely closely with Siemens to ensure that the new trains can be introduced as soon as possible." He estimated that the first fleet will come into operation "in the second half of next year", with a new 'window' set between July and December 2026. "Siemens and TfL are absolutely focused on trying to achieve the July end of the window,' he said. 'But it's too early to say we can get that yet.' He added that the hope is that all 94 trains will be in service '18 to 20 months' after the first one starts running. This would meaning the entire fleet would be in operation by the end of 2027 or early 2028. Adam Handling has revealed that his restaurant Ugly Butterfly at Carbis Bay Hotel in Cornwall will close later this month. The esteemed celebrity chef is also an Acorn Award winner and owns multiple other eateries. But now, the Ugly Butterfly establishment has now confirmed it was time to move on after a very positive time in Cornwall. Only two years ago, the Cornish seaside restaurant was voted one of the best in the UK by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller. The high-end travel magazine picked Ugly Butterfly at Carbis Bay Hotel as one of its top 18 restaurants for the best dining experience in the UK. Handling said Ugly Butterfly Restaurant and Bar will serve its last meal at the Carbis Bay Hotel on June 28. He said: "Our at Carbis Bay has been an incredible chapter and the team couldn't be prouder of everything they have achieved. "From building one of the country's most sustainable brands to creating relationships with the local community, farmers and small producers and earning multiple awards and listings among the UK's best restaurants, Ugly Butterfly's journey so far has been nothing short of phenomenal." Handling added: "There is nothing but positivity here because when one door closes, another one opens. And what's behind this next door for Ugly Butterfly and our entire team, only time will tell. "Thank you to everyone who's supported us – we'll keep you posted on what's next." The celebrity chef now owns and operates the Michelin-starred Frog by Adam Handling in Covent Garden, Eve Bar in Covent Garden, the Loch & the Tyne gastropub in Windsor (which holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand). Handling also owns the Tartan Fox gastropub in Newquay, also in Cornwall, which was launched in June 2024. Restaurant chain owned by Michelin-starred chef is on brink of collapse 16 years after it first opened Last year the pub was featured in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. The Dundee-born chef started his culinary career aged 16 but it was not an easy ride for him. Eager not to attend university, he managed to get an apprenticeship as a chef at Gleneagles hotel in Perthshire, Scotland, as a teenager. Handling had to go through four interviews before he was offered the apprenticeship. For the first nine months, he was only allowed to prepare vegetables. But eventually Handling worked his way up to the grill and ran the section himself. It was at this point that he'd gained the sort of expert training you can only get in prestigious kitchens like Gleneagles, and he was then ready to move on. Following his departure, he worked as a sous chef at the Malmaison hotel in Newcastle, the youngest ever head chef at Fairmont St Andrews, and head chef at St Ermin's Hotel in St James' Park, London. Handling then returned to Scotland to take on his first head chef position at the Fairmont St Andrews Hotel, where he worked for just over two years and earned 2 AA Rosettes for the restaurant. The chef appeared on MasterChef: The Professionals 2013. Handling entered the sixth series and made it all the way to the final three.
