KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is conducting a security simulation exercise in preparation for the 46th ASEAN Summit, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), beginning May 23 with a senior officials' meeting.
A check by Bernama found that the simulation, involving the convoy of vehicles of the delegation and the country leaders, was conducted based on actual movement schedules, with personnel on duty around the clock from the beginning of this week until May 30.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (Operations) deputy director DCP M.V. Sri Kumar said that more than 6,200 officers and personnel have been assigned for duty throughout the summit period, with the number expected to increase as needed.
'In addition to route control, personnel are also tasked with monitoring movement and overseeing security preparations, including the use of metal detectors and facial recognition technology,' he said when met during the exercise at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
In addition, Sri Kumar urged the public to understand the significance of this national event, and to cooperate fully with the authorities.
'We are only implementing phased road closures for a week, to ensure the smooth running and safety of the event,' he said.
He also advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in and around the capital, during this period.
The 46th ASEAN Summit will begin with senior officials' meetings on May 23, followed by ministerial-level meetings on May 25, while the leaders' summit will commence on May 26.
Themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', the summit aims to serve as a foundation for regional and global engagement. Malaysia is committed to strengthening ASEAN centrality, fostering economic cooperation, and championing the principles of inclusivity and sustainability.

Labuan Immigration Detains 15 Filipinos in June 11 Operation

LABUAN: The Labuan Immigration Department (JIM) has detained 15 foreign nationals during an enforcement operation yesterday (June 11) at several locations suspected of housing undocumented migrants here. Its director, Raymond Entalai said those arrested comprised three men, six women, four boys, and two girls -- all Filipino nationals. These foreigners are suspected of committing various immigration offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) during the raids carried out from 1 am tp 4 am. 'The ages of these individuals detained were from one year old to 77 years old, and they are currently being held at the Labuan police lock-up and Labuan Immigration depot for further investigation and action,' he said to Bernama today. Raymond said the Immigration Department would continue to take strict action against anyone found violating the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963, and Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM). This includes action against those who hire or harbour undocumented migrants.

Yusoff Rawther freed of drug trafficking, fake pistols possession charges

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that the prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff Rawther had knowledge, custody, and control of the drugs and fake pistols. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, who has been held in remand for nine months, walked out of court a free man today after the High Court acquitted him of drug trafficking and the possession of two imitation pistols. Justice Jamil Hussin said the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges as it was unable to prove all elements of the offences with credible evidence. 'The prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff had knowledge, custody and control of the drugs and fake pistols. 'The accused is acquitted and discharged without being called to enter his defence,' Jamil said after hearing oral submissions. Yusoff was accused of trafficking in 305g of cannabis found in his vehicle when it was parked in front of the Kuala Lumpur police surau at 10.15am on Sept 6, 2024. The drugs were allegedly wrapped in a black plastic bag. He was also charged with possessing fake pistols outside the Senada Condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day. The fake firearms possession charge, under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, carried a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The drug trafficking charge, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provided for the death penalty or 30 years' imprisonment as well as a whipping of not less than 12 lashes. Yusoff's defence was that the drugs and pistols were planted to frame him. He was held at the Sungai Buloh prison as bail is not allowed for those charged with drug trafficking. Jamil, who is scheduled to retire in November, also said the two investigating officers failed to investigate Yusoff's claim, made to the recording officer during detention, that he was a victim of entrapment by a certain individual. 'The police officers had ample time to verify his statement but did not do so,' he said, adding that this had prejudiced the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Sabri Othman, Shahrizzat Amadan, and R Haravind appeared for the prosecution. Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali, Gurdial Singh Nijar, Nurmustanir Nor, and Amirul Ar-Rashid Azman acted for Yusoff.

Investors hesitant amid global economic concerns, says Tengku Zafrul

Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it is becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Foreign investors are taking a cautious approach towards new investments in Malaysia due to global economic uncertainties, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today. He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. 'Those who have committed have not pulled out. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. 'We also want to ensure that our local companies exporting to the US – especially in sectors such as furniture and downstream palm oil – are taken into account,' Tengku Zafrul said, adding that these sectors 'are not really in competition' with American industries.
