Delhi receives shower of relief from heatwave, IMD issues severe thunderstorm and strong wind alert
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Delhi on Sunday received a welcome shower of relief from the recent heatwave. Parts of Delhi experienced rainfall, bringing down temperatures and improving air quality.
The rainfall, including gusty winds and thunderstorms, has significantly lowered the temperature in Delhi, offering relief from the intense heatwave conditions, providing a much-needed respite from the scorching heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a severe thunderstorm and strong wind alert for the city, warning residents to stay indoors.
According to the IMD, 'moderate to intense spell of rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 80-100 kmph' swept through the capital during the early hours.
Visuals from Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan showed heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashing the national capital, bringing respite from the heat.
Two thundersqualls along with hailstorm activity were recorded at Safdarjung between 0348 to 0350 hrs IST and 0358 to 0400 hrs IST. The first squall saw gusty winds reaching 82 kmph, while the second saw a peak wind speed of 104 kmph, the IMD said.
The weather department urged residents to take precautions. 'Stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary,' the IMD advisory said, as flying debris and low visibility posed risks on the roads.
However, the intense wind and rain also disrupted early morning traffic, with waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the national capital continued to reel under intense heat as several parts of the city recorded a maximum temperature of over 43 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several weather stations across the city reported scorching daytime temperatures until 8:30 AM today, with Ayanagar recording the highest maximum temperature at 45.0C.
The Ayanagar area recorded 45.0C (Max) / 30.5C (Min), Palam saw 44.5C (Max) / 30.2C (Min), Ridge witnessed 43.6C (Max) / 26.2C (Min), Lodhi Road saw 43.4C (Max) / 29.2C (Min) and Safdarjung area experienced 43.3C (Max) / Minimum temperature data.
Earlier this week, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning that Delhi NCR may experience heatwave-like conditions with temperatures potentially exceeding 45C. (ANI)

Shimla, Thunderstorms accompanied with rain and gusty winds lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday causing drop in maximum temperatures while minimum temperatures stayed above normal in most parts of the state, the weather office said. The maximum temperatures dropped by two to four degrees across the state with Una being the hottest recording a high of 39.8 degrees Celsius against a 42.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the weather department said. Meanwhile, Neri recorded a high of 39 degrees Celsius and Sundernagar registered a 37.2 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperatures are likely to fall gradually by four to five degrees and minimum temperatures by two to three degrees over parts of the state during the next four to five days, the MeT centre added. Kukumseri was coldest in the state with a low of 9.2 degrees Celsius while Neri recorded a minimum temperature of 28.1 degrees Celsius, followed by 27.2 degrees Celsius in Dhaulakuan, 27 degrees Celsius in Paonta Sahib and 26.4 degrees Celsius in Hamirpur.

GRAP's Stage 1 withdrawn from Delhi-NCR as AQI improves to 'moderate'
Delhiites breathed cleaner air after showers on early Sunday with the Air Quality Index (AQI) touching 140, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Sub-Committee on Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to revoke actions under Stage-I. 'Today, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) of the day clocked 140 as per the daily AQI Bulletin provided by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB),' said Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in a statement. While comprehensively reviewing the overall air quality parameters in the region and other aspects, the Sub-Committee said, 'AQI of Delhi has shown consistent improvement due to favourable meteorological conditions and the AQI of Delhi has been recorded as 140 for June 15 (in 'Moderate' category). Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI to mainly remain in 'Moderate' category in coming days.' 'Therefore, keeping in view this trend of improvement in the AQI of Delhi and also the forecasts by IMD/ IITM predicting the average air quality of Delhi to stay in 'Moderate' category in the coming days (for which forecast is available), the CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP unanimously decided to revoke Stage-I of the extant schedule of GRAP in the entire NCR, with immediate effect,' the statement said. It was also stressed that all the agencies of the state governments/GNCTD in the NCR, need to ensure that all statutory directions, advisories and orders issued by the Commission are followed and implemented in right earnest to prevent the air quality from slipping to the 'Poor' category. The sub-committee said that all the agencies concerned are also required to take note of various actions and the targeted timelines as envisaged in the comprehensive policy issued by the Commission to curb air pollution in the NCR and take appropriate actions accordingly in the field, particularly the dust mitigation measures, the statement said. 'The Sub-Committee, shall be keeping a close watch on the air quality scenario and review the situation from time to time for further appropriate decision depending upon the air quality in Delhi and forecast made available by IMD/ IITM,' it said.

In its meeting held today, Sub-Committee on GRAP revoked GRAP-I measures in the National Capital Region (NCR) with immediate effect, as per an notification issued by the CAQM. 'AQI of Delhi has shown consistent improvement due to favorable meteorological conditions and the AQI of Delhi has been recorded as 140 for June 15, 2025, (in 'Moderate' category). Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI to mainly remain in 'Moderate' category in coming days,' reads an order issued by the CAQM. GRAP-I revoked in Delhi-NCR Accordingly, the sub-committee decided to revoke its order, which invoked actions under Stage-I ('Poor' Air Quality) of the extant GRAP in the entire NCR, with immediate effect. 'All the agencies of the concerned State Govts./GNCTD in the NCR, in an effort to sustain the better AQI levels as being experienced currently and not to let the air quality slip to the 'Poor' category, however need to ensure that all statutory directions, advisories, orders etc. issued by the Commission are followed and implemented in right earnest, including the rules/ regulations/ guidelines issued by MoEFCC and the Central Pollution Control Board and related instructions/ guidelines issued by the respective State Govts./GNCTD and Pollution Control Boards/DPCC, across all contributing sectors,' the order read. The national capital recorded an AQI of 140 on Sunday, which is still considered 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' but escapes the 'Poor' category. Earlier on June 7, the CAQM had enforced Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR with immediate effect in view of the rising pollution, as the AQI reached 209. An AQI rating is categorised as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and 401-500 (severe). (With ANI inputs)
