Cops to take charge of revamped scam response centre
Malaysians lost RM1.2 billion to various scams last year. In a case last month, a 53-year-old woman was swindled of nearly RM1 million by a love scam syndicate.
PETALING JAYA : The police are to soon take charge of the National Scam Response Centre, which will be beefed up with its 997 hotline open around the clock, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.
There had been 'certain operational shortcomings' under its current structure, he said, according to Bernama.
The centre was set up in 2022 as a joint venture between the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia, banks and telecommunications companies.
'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account. Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' Saifuddin was quoted as saying.
The police will now be supported by the other key agencies instead.
He said the restructuring will also enable NSRC's 997 hotline to be operational 24 hours daily, with the centre to get more manpower to improve its response time.
Saifuddin said the proposed improvements were approved by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will be executed soon. Anwar had said on Thursday that the centre's role would be expanded to cover all forms of cybercrime.
The centre was set up in 2022 to deal with the growing number of cyber fraud cases in Malaysia, including phishing scams, Macau scams, malware attack scams, parcel scams and love scams.
Last year, Anwar said in a parliamentary reply that Malaysians suffered the loss of RM1.22 billion to online scams from January to October 2024. He said the figure includes losses from various fraudulent schemes, such as telecommunications fraud, e-commerce scams, non-existent loans, love scams and fake investments.

The 22-year-old tested positive for drugs following the accident, police said. He also has a record of five criminal offences. According to Berita Harian, magistrate Nurliyana Md Zukri issued the remand order at the Setiu magistrates' court under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use. The boat, which was carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40, was en route from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar when it capsized at around 10.30pm. Three people died at the scene: S Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V Vennpani. A six-year-old child remains in critical condition and is being treated in the intensive care unit of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu. Initial police investigations revealed that none of the passengers was wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

5 students in MRSM bullying case out on bail

(Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA : Five students who were remanded by police over the bullying of another student at the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Terengganu, were released today on police bail. Besut district police chief Azamuddin Ahmad said police have almost completed the investigation, and two more students will be released tomorrow, Berita Harian reported. 'The investigating officer will contact the families of the students involved on the next steps in the case,' he was quoted as saying. Azamuddin said police are now in the process of obtaining the students' school and medical records. 'We are also looking for witnesses to the incident to complete our investigation. The investigation paper will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further orders,' he said. Police had identified and detained five Form Three students on Thursday over their alleged involvement in the bullying of a Form Two student. On Friday, Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the students who bullied the 14-year-old student have been expelled from the MRSM, under his zero-tolerance policy on bullying cases. Yesterday, Azamuddin was reported to have said that police arrested two more students after they presented themselves at the Besut district police headquarters with their families. This brought the total number of students detained to seven, comprising six Form Three students and one Form Five student. Following the initial arrest of the five students, it was reported that the victim claimed he was forced to squat with slippers on his head for 40 minutes at about 11.30pm on Tuesday. The victim also alleged he was punched in the abdomen and slapped in the face by several Form Three students at the hostel.

Full VEP enforcement at Johor border begins tomorrow
Failure to comply may result in vehicles being barred from exiting Malaysia until the fine is paid and the VEP tag is activated. (Bernama pic) JOHOR BAHRU : Singaporean vehicles entering Malaysia without a valid vehicle entry permit (VEP) from tomorrow will be subject to an immediate RM300 fine as full enforcement of the VEP system at the Malaysia-Singapore land border comes into effect. The enforcement is in accordance with Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which makes it an offence for any foreign-registered vehicle to enter or remain in Malaysia without a valid permit. On June 4, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the VEP system was crucial not only for managing cross-border traffic but also for improving the enforcement of traffic laws on foreign vehicles. Failure to comply may result in the vehicle being barred from exiting Malaysia until the fine is paid and the VEP tag is activated. All foreign vehicles entering Malaysia via the Johor Causeway and Second Link must register at pay a RM10 fee for a radio frequency identification (RFID) VEP sticker, valid for five years, and pay a RM20 road charge for each entry. According to the official website, each registered vehicle will receive a non-transferable RFID tag with a unique identification code, valid for five years. For private vehicle owners who have only completed pre-registration, a summons will be issued and the vehicle will not be allowed to leave Malaysia until payment is made. For company-owned vehicles, a notice will be issued if only the pre-registration is completed, while compounds will be imposed for those with no registration at all. Compounds can only be paid via cashless methods at road transport department (JPJ) counters, mobile JPJ trucks, or online platforms such as MyEG. The transport ministry said the VEP system had been implemented in phases since Oct 1, 2024. Reminders were issued to Singaporean vehicle owners who had not registered. As of June 2, a total of 231,018 VEP stickers had been issued to Singaporean private and company-owned vehicles. However, only 194,507 stickers were installed and activated, while 36,511 stickers (about 15.8%) remain inactive. Between Oct 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025, authorities inspected 52,012 vehicles, issuing 2,245 reminder notices to owners who had yet to complete the activation process.
