New-look Bruins beat Lightning 4-0, day after making a flurry of rebuilding moves at trade deadline
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Boston Bruins got off to a good start in their new era.
Cole Koepke had a career-high two goals to lead Boston in a 4-0 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday, one day after being active sellers at the NHL trade deadline.
Koepke scored twice against his former team, Mark Kastelic and Nikita Zadorov also had goals.
All three players are in their first season with the new-look Bruins.
Boston's boldest move was dealing captain Brad Marchand, the last remaining player from its 2011 Stanley Cup championship team, to the Florida Panthers.
'It was a tough day,' said Bruins forward David Pastrnak, one of the last familiar faces still wearing the black and gold for the Boston Bruins.
The rebuilding franchise will receive a second-round draft pick from Florida and the compensation could become a first-rounder if the Panthers win two rounds in the playoffs and the 36-year-old wing plays in half their playoff games games.
Boston also sent forward Justin Brazeau to Minnesota, forward Charlie Coyle to Colorado and forward Marc McLaughlin to New Jersey along with defenseman Brandon Carlo to Toronto. Forward Trent Frederic was traded to Edmonton earlier in the week, sparking the start of the fire sale.
'We didn't burn it down,' Bruins general manager Don Sweeney insisted.
The Bruins are in a pack of teams with a potential chance to earn a wild card in the playoffs, but they will have to move on without a lot of familiar faces.
'That's the worst part of our business,' Pastrnak said on ABC during an intermission interview.
Boston's management clearly decided it was time to move on.
The Bruins earned 100-plus points in each of the last six non-pandemic seasons, including two years ago when they won an NHL-record 65 games, but their only extended playoff run was a trip to the 2019 Stanley Cup final.

Given much of the reporting in recent weeks about Porzingis' availability on the trade market, Boston eyeing a potential new deal comes as a bit of a surprise. That said, health issues could help the Celtics keep him on the team at a much steeper discount than what he's been paid for the last two seasons in Boston. If the plan is to keep him around, that could have implications for the future of Jrue Holiday, Sam Hauser, and maybe even Payton Pritchard in Boston. If the plan is to keep Porzingis, they'll likely have to trade at least two of those three players to get under the NBA's second tax apron. BOSTON — On the strength of four solo homers, including two from rookie third baseman Marcelo Mayer, along with a strong effort from starter Walker Buehler, the Boston Red Sox won their second series in a row against an American League East rival. Jarren Duran's leadoff shot, Mayer's two homers and a go-ahead solo slam over the Green Monster from Abraham Toro in the fifth helped the Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Advertisement Some takeaways from a successful series win ahead of an off day Thursday: Mayer hasn't even been in the majors for a month, but the 22-year-old has already hit three homers and is finding his groove. Mayer hit his first homer over the weekend on the road against the New York Yankees. He's hitting .250 with an .836 OPS with three homers and three doubles in 15 games. 'The process always stays the same,' he said. 'I feel more comfortable every single day I'm here. Obviously, a little bit of adjustments on me that have helped me be more on time.' For the first time since late April, the Red Sox got five consecutive starts of five innings or more from their rotation. Garrett Crochet started the trend with six innings on Saturday, and Hunter Dobbins followed with five innings Sunday. Brayan Bello threw 6 1/3 innings Monday, Lucas Giolito followed with six innings Tuesday, and Buehler capped the turn through the rotation with seven innings Wednesday. Cora turned to Greg Weissert, who kept a speedy Caballero close to the bag, stalling his momentum so that when he took off for third, Narváez had plenty of time to throw him out in an inning that could have unraveled. Weissert walked a batter, then allowed a single before a big strikeout of Matt Thaiss. '(Weissert) was very patient with Caballero,' Cora said. 'We knew he was going to take off. He's really good at what he does. Weissert stepped off, and then he was patient enough for him not to gain momentum. And the throw was right on.' He's a good player, and he showed it in spring training, did everything we asked him to do. He went to Triple A — wasn't upset about it. Stuff happened, and now he's here. He's doing an outstanding job.' After Thursday's off day, the Red Sox host the Yankees over the weekend for the first time at Fenway this season. I know we're ready for it. We're going to go out there and play really hard and see what happens.' Despite having just played New York last weekend, Cora said the series versus the Yankees is always a challenge, but it's one they're familiar with. 'It really doesn't matter,' he said. 'We've been doing this forever. We don't play them for two months, then we play them six times in 10 days. We know them; they know us. It's always a challenge because it's a long weekend.' Despite winning the series last weekend, the Red Sox still have their work cut out for them, starting Friday. 'Where we're at in the year, there's plenty of time for us to make a run,' Buehler said. 'And it starts with winning series against teams in our division. And to do that back to back (this week), I think, is huge. We don't know when Bregman is going to be back exactly, but that's not going to hurt us in any way. Marcelo Mayer hits first 2 career home runs at Fenway Park to help Red Sox beat Rays
BOSTON (AP) — The soundtrack to Marcelo Mayer's first major league home run was a chorus of boos as he rounded the bases at New York's Yankee Stadium last week. The Red Sox rookie added his latest two homers on much friendlier soil. Mayer hit a pair of solo home runs, two of four on the day for Boston, to help the Red Sox claim the rubber match of their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Wednesday night. 'I'd much rather get cheered than booed,' Marcelo said. 'I love the energy that Fenway Park brings. It's something that I'll remember the rest of my life.' The 22-year-old, who has played 15 games since being called up on May 24, is the youngest Red Sox player to have a multi-homer game since Rafael Devers in 2018. He's the third-youngest player in team history to do it in five career games, behind only Billy Conigliaro (21) and Ted Williams (20). 'It was a good one,' Cora said of Marcelo's performance. 'They had a good game plan going into it and they executed it.' Marcelo said his comfort level is rising with each one of his appearances at the plate. He credits the work that he's put in with the Red Sox assistants. 'The process always stays the same I feel more comfortable every single day I'm here,' he said. 'All the adjustments I've made have helped me a little more on the timing.' Boston is off on Thursday, then will open a three-game series against the Yankees on Friday. Though he's faced the Yankees already, this was be his first time seeing Boston's rivals at Fenway. 'I know this place is going to be rocking,' Marcelo said.
