Man Utd accepted fierce rivals' bid for David Beckham before Real Madrid move
David Beckham took his fame to another level when he left Manchester United for Real Madrid in 2003 - but the former midfielder has revealed that he could have ended up elsewhere
David Beckham's desire to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid was solidified after the club tried to flog him to Barcelona. Beckham became a Galactico in 2003 when he swapped Old Trafford for the Bernabeu – but the transfer only came to fruition after Barca got involved in a tug of war.
The England star came through the United academy and played for the club for 11 years before deciding to move elsewhere. A falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson played a role in the decision, with Fergie writing in his 2013 autobiography: 'David was the only player I managed who chose to be famous, who made it his mission to be known outside the game.'
He added: 'The minute a Manchester United player thought he was bigger than the manager he had to go... David thought he was bigger than Alex Ferguson. There is no doubt about that in my mind.'
Real Madrid ended up paying €35million (£25m) to United for Beckham and the right midfielder joined on a four-year contract which was reportedly worth €6m per year. But had United chairman Peter Kenyon got his way, Beckham would have actually joined Barcelona instead.
"My team was always Real Madrid and funnily enough I got sold from Manchester United to Barcelona," he told CBS Sports. "I was on holiday, Peter Kenyon phoned me and he said: 'We've accepted a bid from Barcelona and we're selling you'.
"I said: 'If you are going to sell me, the only team I want to move to is Real Madrid', because I always had a dream of playing for Real Madrid when I was a young kid.
"I never thought I'd leave Manchester United but if I did, you know, I'd love to have played for Real Madrid. And if they wanted me to leave then the only club that I wanted to go to was Real Madrid." Beckham added: "Funnily enough, in a day and a half, it happened.'
In a separate interview with BBC Radio 4, Beckham admitted that United's desire to sell him to a club he didn't want to join helped clarify his thoughts about joining a star-studded Real. 'There was never any revenge. I was hurt and angry at the time at how the situation had gone because throughout the season I was left out of certain games but never thought it would lead to me leaving,' he said.
"But I had heard rumours I might be sold. I was on holiday in the States with Victoria and one of my friends called and told me it was on Sky Sports that United had agreed terms with Barcelona. I said 'that wasn't right, I don't know anything about it'.
"I then flew back to London. I tried to speak to Peter Kenyon and tried to speak to the manager and he said 'no'. I said 'well I need to speak to him and understand what is going on'. He said 'it's true, we have agreed a deal'.
"That is when I spoke to my agent and said 'if I am going to move, I'm going to move to Madrid'. Within a day, I was sat with the president of Madrid and we agreed that is where I was going to go.'

Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him
Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Man Utd beat Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea to sign Southampton prospect
Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign teenager Harley Emsden-James from Southampton, beating a string of Premier League rivals to his signature. The Red Devils have done a deal worth £1m for the 16-year-old talent, although they will go on to pay add-ons and Southampton have negotiated a 20 per cent sell on clause. The centre-back has played up to Under-18 level for the Saints, despite only turning 16 in March this year. There was plenty of competition for the England youth international, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham all tracking the youngster. Manchester United have won the race, though, continuing their recent ploy to snap up the most promising young talent in the country. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. The Red Devils have not only been able to do this from much smaller clubs, but also poaching talent from those of rival stature. Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven both arrived from Arsenal in the last year and have made their debuts in the Manchester United first team. It is very unlikely Emsden James will follow them into the first team in the near future, instead heading into the Under-18 team at Manchester United when he arrives. 18-year-old defender Heaven signed from Arsenal on February 1 and has already made six first team appearances for the Red Devils. It would have been more than that if it were not for a season-disrupting injury and he is likely to be regularly involved next season. Speaking out on why he left the Gunners for a move to Old Trafford, he said: 'The opportunities that the young players have got here in the past. 'I think United had the most minutes given to teenagers last season [2023/24]. That convinced me to come here. More Trending 'And the people and the fans here are quite loving, and I felt that when I was playing. They're so supportive.' Director of football Jason Wilcox has been credited for bringing in a number of talented prospects and Ruben Amorim thanked him for Heaven's arrival. 'I think once again Jason Wilcox is doing a great job bringing Ayden,' Amorim told MUTV in May. 'I think these types of players are what we need. He showed a lot of quality and character after the big injury. We want these types of players.' Arsenal star David Raya dresses as an air stewardess and serves passengers for his Las Vegas stag do after proposing to his model fiancee last year
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya let his hair down for his stag do by dressing as an air stewardess and serving passengers on a flight to Las Vegas. Raya proposed to his model fiancee Tatiana Trouboul in October, but has had to wait until the end of the season for his bachelor party. With the campaign now over following Spain's Nations League final defeat by Portugal on Sunday, Raya is free to celebrate with his friends, and they pulled out all the stops as they headed Stateside. The 29-year-old was happy to wear an air stewardess outfit and he was pictured with a beaming smile as he handed over cookies to passengers during their flight to Vegas. Raya was joined by his brother Oscar and Spanish comedian Tomas Garcia Serrano. Several LaLiga footballers also made the trip, including Getafe's Diego Rico Salguero as well as Rayo Vallecano pair Adri Embarba and Unai Lopez. The group appeared in good spirits as they posed for a photo once they touched down in Vegas, with Raya also sharing photos from the famous Sin City strip. Snaps were also posted online of Raya posing in a swimming pool alongside his friends. Bright sunshine greeted Raya and Co as the Arsenal star kicked back and relaxed after a long, hard season. Raya and Trouboul's wedding date is currently unknown. The couple have been together since 2021, but did not go public with their relationship until the following year. Trouboul hails from Barcelona, but now lives in London with Raya, having moved her life across to the UK to support the Arsenal shot-stopper. Raya got down on one knee last year at a candlelit dinner, and subsequently posted photos of the evening shortly before Arsenal faced Bournemouth in the Premier League. The Gunners went on to lose that match 2-0, but Raya enjoyed another strong season at Arsenal as he finished as the Premier League Golden Glove winner alongside Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels. Raya now has some time off to enjoy his stag do and spend more time with Trouboul ahead of returning to pre-season training with Arsenal next month. He could face increased pressure for his place next season, with Arsenal set to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea. However, he is still likely to remain Mikel Arteta's No 1 for now after making that spot his own over the last two seasons.
