I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness by Irene Solà review – makes most fiction feel timid

The Guardian2 days ago

Margarida is trapped in Mas Clavell, a farmhouse in the Catalonian mountains, with Bernadeta. Bernadeta is dying in an annoying way, with 'deep, raspy snores'. Margarida herself has been dead for some time. Rather than ascend to heaven, she has been 'dragged downstairs by the ghastly, insufferable women of the house'. Irene Solà's teeming third novel, I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness, follows these women, both dead and alive, as they prepare for a party. They cook and scrub, tell stories and make fart jokes. The novel begins at dawn and ends at night, but the historical era jumps around without warning. Now the viceroy's men are arriving on horseback. Now a teenager is calling everyone a 'dumbass'. Now local women are fleeing from Nazi soldiers. Characters shape-shift as much as the timeline. A he-goat becomes a bull, then a cat, then 'an unusually long, skinny man with the toes of a rooster'. Now the viceroy's men are demons, dragging Margarida into a 'sea of blood'.
I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness references Mrs Dalloway, and shares the modernist interest in formal experimentation and action that unfolds over a single day. Instead of tracking interior sensation, Solà presents a seemingly inexhaustible slew of bodily description, held together by the opaque, vindictive logic of a folk tale. There are wonderful lists: of the different kinds of shit on the mountain, of cheese-making equipment, of body parts fondled by hands in the dark. I read the book twice in quick succession and every time I opened it, I found something to savour. The prose has the demonic excess of a Hieronymus Bosch painting.
Here is a list of key descriptions of central characters, as translated from Catalan by Mara Faye Lethem. Bernadeta, who was born without eyelashes, is 'ugly'. Joana, the woman from whose 'entrails' Margarida was 'ripped', is also 'ugly'. Bernadi, Margarida's father, is 'ugly as a wart'. Her sister Blanca is a 'deviant' with no tongue. Marta ('ugly') spends her youth looking out of the window trying to catch 'the curled shape of an ugly man in a storm'. As an infant, Marti was 'ugly as a scowl'. Even unborn frogs are imagined as 'ugly'.

The novel explains that this 'darkness' is the result of a botched pact with the devil. A long time ago, Joana met a bull so black that even 'the flesh inside his eyes was black'. She gave the creature her soul in exchange for a 'full man'. But then Joana claimed she'd been wronged. Her new husband, the heir of Mas Clavell, was missing a toe and therefore not 'full'. The devil returned as an 'ugly, haggard, bald man' and doomed Joana's descendants to be born with something missing. For two of them – one missing a liver and one an anus – this is fatal. For the novel, the curse is a vibe killer. Anything can happen in its world, and yet what does happen is strangely predictable: more, different suffering. The characters, without agency, don't develop. Rather, they are punished.
Perhaps there is more to the novel's apparent scorn for its characters' rural damnation. Perhaps it wants to show that the natural world's capricious, disruptive energy gives the lie to human fatalism. Solà's serious attention to the nonhuman makes most contemporary realist literary fiction feel narrow and timid, wilfully deaf to the other forms of life with which all human drama is interdependent. Her second novel, When I Sing, Mountains Dance, is a tender human love story that turns on moments where human and nonhuman come into contact. A roe-buck, a field of chanterelle mushrooms, tectonic plates: all meaningfully participate in the development of an elegant plot. I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness compares all its humans to animals: Blanca has a 'bovine' face, Joana's is like a mare. Sometimes, the connection is illuminating. But more often, the emphasis on urges and ugliness reduces and simplifies both human and animal, rather than opening them out to one another's complexity. Bernadeta scrapes 'toast with her front teeth, like a rabbit'. Margarida turns her head away, 'repulsed'.

Meet Ilia Topuria, the son of refugees and high school dropout set to replace Conor McGregor as the face of the UFC

THE Ultimate Fighting Championship is potentially just days away from having a new poster boy. And it's somewhat fitting that the potential coronation of mixed martial arts' premier promotion's new king will take place nearly four years to the day that Conor McGregor - the face of the sport for several years - had what looked to be his final outing. 9 9 9 9 Many have long thought the heir apparent to McGregor's throne was 'Suga' Sean O'Malley, although back-to-back championship defeats to Merab Dvalishvili have seen the former bantamweight king's sweetness fade. The man poised to succeed 'The Notorious' is a Georgian-born Spaniard who made a statement on the prelims of what with increasing certainty looks to be the last McGregor card in UFC history. The man in question is former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who will bid to further write his name into the history books early on Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 317 in Las Vegas. Undefeated Topuria will do battle with fellow fan favourite and former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant 155lbs belt, which the dominant Islam Makhachev left aside. Becoming the TENTH two-weight champion in UFC history in the fashion he claimed and defended the featherweight title will catapult Topuria into a new stratosphere, one he always believed he'd reach. Topuria, 28, was born in 1997 in Halle, Germany, where his parents were granted refuge during the ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia in the '90s. It was in Germany that Topuria would discover the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling, which he practised along with his younger brother, Aleksandre. The Topuria family would eventually return to Georgia, where the brothers would continue their education in Greco-Roman wrestling, in 2003. JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 9 9 9 9 Eager to provide a better life for their children, Topuria's parents, Zaza and Inga, moved the family to Alicante, Spain, in 2012. Not long after their arrival, Topuria's mother spotted a man sporting cauliflower ears and asked him if he knew where her sons could continue their training. Watch jacked Ilia Topuria complete epic UFC 317 body transformation after ditching crash diet to lose over 40lbs That chance encounter paved the way for Topuria to start his mixed martial arts journey under the tutelage of the Climent brothers, Agustin and Jorge. The Topuria brothers' passion for MMA was so fervent that they both asked their dad if they could DROP OUT of school to pursue their dreams of fighting in the UFC. In 2022, Ilia said of his early teenage years in Spain: 'Yes [it was hard to communicate], but I left school when I was like 15 years old. 'When I was 15 years old, I went with my brother to talk with my father to tell him, 'Hey, dad. ''We don't want to go to school any more, but we really want to train. 'And we're going to the gym all day, every day, and we're going to train.' 'Because my dream was to fight in the UFC. And he told me, 'If you're really going to train all the time like you tell me, then you have my approval. 'That's one of the reasons why I made my debut so young in the UFC, because it's very tough to get into the UFC from Spain. 'Because I wasn't living in the United States and I wasn't born here, because it's easier.' Three years after beginning his training with the Climent brothers, Topuria made his professional debut at the tender age of 18. He'd rip through the competition on the regional and European circuits with eight straight finishes, seven of which came via submission. The UFC came calling in October 2022 and Topuria hasn't looked back since, stopping all comers bar Youssef Zalal and Josh Emmett - both of whom were battered from pillar to post - on his way to claiming and defending the featherweight crown. His coronation as featherweight king came last February with a sensational second-round knockout of fan favourite Alexander Volkanovski. And his final outing in the division last October saw him achieve the previously unthinkable and knock out iron-chinned former featherweight champion Max Holloway. Topuria's exploits - in particular his championship victories - have seen him become a superstar in Georgia, Spain and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. He has a whopping 7.7million Instagram followers, has been recognised by boyhood footie team Real Madrid - who presented him in front of a capacity crowd at the Bernabeu after his KO of Volk - and is pals with Los Blancos legends Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos. His global following will explode and the celebs in his orbit will only become bigger, even though he doesn't crave the limelight, should he become a two-weight champion in a similar fashion to his featherweight coronation. The title of 'biggest star in the UFC' is right there for the taking for Topuria. All that remains now is for him to make it his own in devastating fashion. 9

Katie Price's boyfriend JJ Slater 'unfollows' Conor McGregor after her wild time partying with the UFC star in Ibiza

Katie Price 's boyfriend JJ Slater has reportedly hit the unfollow button on Conor McGregor after she attended a raucous party with the UFC star in Ibiza. The 47-year-old was seen nearly spilling out of her tiny bikini as she had a wild time partying with the 36-year-old sports star at the famous Ocean Beach Club. Conor later shared a snap with Katie from the event on Instagram, captioning it: 'Katie Price Forever.' But it seems the snaps didn't sit well with JJ, 31, who wasted no time in unfollowing Conor on Instagram, according to The Sun. A source told the publication that JJ had been following Conor on social media for around half a year after Katie introduced them at his pub in Ireland. They explained: 'Katie was already following Conor on socials, and after that he followed her back and JJ also started following Conor. 'Now, after Katie was snapped partying with Conor in Ibiza, JJ has unfollowed Conor. 'He didn't like seeing the pictures of them having a whale of a time on the party island, he thought it looked disrespectful.' MailOnline has contacted JJ's representatives for comment. JJ, who found fame on Married At First Sight UK, has been dating Katie since earlier this year. Katie sparked further health fears from fans as she cuddled up to Conor with her tiny frame on display. She was all smiles with her pearly-white teeth as she showed off her slender arms and waist as well as razor-sharp jawline. Katie, also known as Jordan, boasted a bronze complexion as she danced beside Irish mixed martial artist Conor, 36. Conor went shirtless for the booze-filled party, wearing just a pair of red shorts and a white hat with his heavily tattooed chest on display. Since arriving in O Beach in Ibiza, Katie has caught up with famous pals including Wayne Lineker, Dean Gaffney and Jamie O'Hara. The mum-of-five previously addressed her shrinking figure back in May on Snapchat to worried fans. She said: 'Yes I've lost weight. Yes that what I've wanted to do, I've wanted to lose weight. 'Because the past three, four years ago when I broke my feet and I was in a wheelchair for 10 months because they said I'd never walk again, and obviously you put weight on being in a wheelchair. 'And then I did all the IVF stuff, that also puts on weight. So yeah I did put on weight and I hated it, I felt uncomfortable and it wasn't me.' Last month, Katie branded herself 'ugly and disgusting' as she watched back video footage of herself undergoing plastic surgery in Turkey. In January, the mother-of-five flew abroad for 'tweaks' to her sixth £10,000 face lift and documented the trip for a new YouTube video. Speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast last year, Katie explained that she has never been happy with her body. She said: 'I always said I haven't got body dysmorphia but there's definitely something, I don't know what it is... 'I've never looked in the mirror and thought I'm pretty or whatever.' However, despite having had at least six face lifts, Katie insists that she is not scared of aging.

EXCLUSIVE I'm a VIP hostess for footballers in Ibiza like Jude Bellingham, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard - but here's one major problem you didn't know England's favourite stars face

A VIP hostess who helps organise luxury holidays for footballers in Ibiza has spilled the details on their swanky getaways. Alis Moore, a director at Faith Concierge, has been working in the luxury experience sector ever since becoming pals with Wayne Lineker eight years ago. She's brushed shoulders with the great and good of English football including Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, John Terry, and Kieran Trippier - and even shared a recent snap with Jude and Jobe Bellingham. Initially she worked in a more hands-on role - doing stars' shopping, taking them to the best beach clubs, getting them on their boats - but she has since graduated to a role upstairs and oversees a crew of 10 hostesses. Faith has deals with around 200 rentable boats around the Spanish island, with the cheapest costing around £1,000 per day, and the most expensive soaring to £20,000 for the players who want the grooviest parties. But it turns out the stars often do prefer substance over style - at least when it comes to what cars they zip around in. 'We do offer Ferraris and Lamborghinis, but in Ibiza the players want to take their friendship groups so it's about the bigger cars,' Alis tells Mail Sport. 'The G-wagons and Range Rovers are always popular! 'We usually put together the itinerary for them. Because we've been here so long, we know the best places to go. So we'll tailor-make it for them. 'Some of them want to party for 10 days straight! 'But some of them want to come for a chilled time with their family, it's not just the party stuff. A lot of them just want a relaxing holiday and to stay out of the limelight. 'The island caters to everybody - there's an amazing standard of food and hotels. All the best international DJs are here every night of the week.' One man who has contributed to Ibiza's boom in popularity among footballers more than most is Wayne Lineker. In 2012, he launched the party resort Ocean Beach - known as O Beach - famed for its poolside parties and DJ performances. Arne Slot was seen living it up there last month, following the Reds' Premier League triumph, and even got a cheeky kiss on the cheek by Lineker. Meanwhile, the Bellingham brothers enjoyed several beverages with their pals, and Lineker, as they sat in an exclusive VIP area. Jack Grealish is a regular at Ocean Beach with Lineker once joking about the prospect of a four-week loan deal for the Manchester City man at his beach club, following his omission from the England Euro 2024 squad. And it is believed that YouTuber KSI spent a whopping £51,000 on 600 bottles of champagne during his trip to Ocean Beach in June 2023. Don't scratch your eyes, that is a real sentence. It's not all fun and games, though. There is a serious side to the pleasure - security. Alis tells Mail Sport: 'A lot of footballers get targeted by organised crime out here. If people see footballers out in the clubs spending lots of money, they can get targeted. 'People follow them home and there have been robberies in the past. 'If I know we've got a big name coming out, first of all, we would only ever put them in a villa where we trust the owner. We have lots of our properties exclusively - you won't find them on AirBnB or other websites. If you were to book them, it's quite easy for someone to copy the keys. 'We do a lot of private villas so they're not as easily accessible. We can also provide 24/7 villa security and personal, but a lot of them fly out with their own. 'It's not as bad nowadays but it was more dangerous after Covid. A lot of people were having their watches and jewellery stolen and there were villa robberies. It's not as bad now as it was a few years ago. They can relax more and enjoy themselves.' Mail Sport asks if Alis has encountered any particularly bizarre requests from footballers. The answer is no, but she does admit that players sometimes break the bank with precious marriage proposals for their partners. 'We did one last week, the footballers love to be over the top and extravagant,' she says. 'We had a proposal where the beach club messaged saying it was so over the top! It was a massive display with flowers on the beach and they said to us to not do it as big as it was a distraction for everyone in the restaurant!'
