Biometric identity verification stations are gaining popularity

PARIS : The startup called World, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has announced the launch of its first biometric identification terminals in the US. They enable users to verify their identity by scanning their irises.
World's mission is to create a global network of digital identity and financial services, based on a biometric identity verification technology called World ID.
This is done primarily via a mobile app, but also via spherical devices, capable of scanning users' irises to uniquely and securely verify their identity. Installed since 2023 and in small numbers in overseas locations, these 'Orbs' are now coming to the US.
People in the US can verify their World ID with these devices, which are currently installed in six cities (Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco), as well as in Razer gaming stores. The company hopes to roll out several thousand of these nationwide very soon.
Basically, the device captures an image of the user's iris and extracts a digital representation, which is then converted into a unique identifier, the World ID, to prove that the user is a human being and not a bot.
In exchange for this verification, users can receive Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, the cryptocurrency associated with the project.
To do this, users can download the World App, locate a nearby Orb, then go to the location to have their iris scanned and prove that they are indeed human.
This technology enables them to access digital services requiring identity verification, participate in cryptocurrency distribution programmes and, above all, protect themselves against online fraud.
In terms of security, World claims that biometric data is not stored in any identifiable way, and that iris fragments are anonymised and therefore cannot be used to trace the user's identity. As for the late deployment of Orbs in the US, this is mainly due to regulatory, strategic and social reasons.
The startup's ambition is to one day reach the milestone of one billion human beings worldwide who can be identified in this way.

(AP pic) SYDNEY : Asian shares and Wall Street futures climbed in Asia on Thursday after a US federal court blocked President Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs from going into effect, sending the dollar up on safe haven currencies. The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from nations that sell more to the US than they buy. The White House quickly appealed the decision, and could take it all the way to the Supreme Court if needed, but in the meantime it offered some hope that Trump might back away from the highest tariff levels he had threatened. 'We're just trying to work out what it might mean basically but obviously the market is doing a knee-jerk reaction,' said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB. 'So this may be an absolute storm in a teacup or potentially something more significant.' Investors reacted by embracing risk assets and Japan's Nikkei quickly rose 1%, while South Korea's shares added 0.8%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up, awaiting the opening of Chinese markets. S&P 500 futures climbed 1.5%, while Nasdaq futures rose 1.8%. The latter had already been lifted by relief over earnings from Nvidia, which beat sales estimates. The chipmaker and AI darling also projected strong revenues for the current quarter, sending its shares up 4.4% after hours. That news helped offset a Financial Times report that the White House had ordered US firms that offer software used to design semiconductors to stop selling their services to Chinese groups. The New York Times separately reported the US had suspended some sales to China of critical US technologies, including those related to jet engines, semiconductors and certain chemicals. Pushing out rate cuts The news of the court decision hit traditional safe havens, lifting the dollar 0.8% on the Swiss franc to 0.336. It gained 0.6% on the Japanese yen to 145.76 yen, while the euro dipped 0.5% to US$1.1230. Yields on 10-year Treasuries rose 3 basis points to 4.51% and markets further shaved the chance of a Federal Reserve rate cut anytime soon. Minutes of the last Fed meeting showed 'almost all participants commented on the risk that inflation could prove to be more persistent than expected' due to Trump's tariffs. A rate cut in July is now seen as just a 22% chance, while September has come into around 60% having been more than fully priced a month ago. In commodity markets, gold slipped 0.9% to US$3,259 an ounce. Oil prices extended a rally begun on supply concerns as Opec+ agreed to leave their output policy unchanged and as the US barred Chevron from exporting Venezuelan crude.

(AP pic) HONG KONG : Asian stocks sank Monday after Donald Trump last week lobbed a fresh trade missile by doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium and accused China of violating last month's agreement to slash tit-for-tat levies. The US president's comments were followed by claims by his commerce secretary that Beijing had been slow to implement the deal, which helped rally markets last month and fanned hopes for a lasting detente between the world's top economies. Still, treasury secretary Scott Bessent – who last week warned negotiations with China were 'a bit stalled' – said the US leader could speak with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping 'very soon' in talks that could help break the impasse. The latest salvos from the White House came as it faces a legal battle after a trade court on Wednesday blocked Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariff blitz, saying he had overstepped his authority with the across-the-board taxes. An appeals court gave the levies a stay of execution on Thursday but the wrangle could drag on, causing more uncertainty. Trump said Friday he would jack up steel and aluminium to 50%, from 25%, which he said 'will even further secure the steel industry'. He also claimed Beijing had 'totally violated' last month's agreement with China to cut eye-watering tariffs for 90 days to hammer out a broader package. Later, commerce secretary Howard Lutnick told 'Fox News Sunday' that Beijing had been 'slow-rolling the deal'. Chinese officials accused Washington of making 'bogus charges and unreasonably accused China of violating the consensus, which is seriously contrary to the facts'. The developments have thrown the trade war back into the spotlight, having been put on the back burner after the China detente and indications that governments were working deals with US officials. 'As we await whether the 90-day truce will result in a more permanent resolution, we are left wondering what may happen if progress stalls and the US and China are unable to make a deal,' said Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist at Morningstar. 'Trump is already making headlines again on reimposing EU tariffs. 'Should this happen with the EU or China, markets will likely crater again and will see much greater volatility given the heightened uncertainty with regard to global growth.' Asian markets sank Monday as investors brushed off data showing the Federal Reserve's favoured inflation gauge cooled more than expected last month, with fears about the impact of the tariffs on the economy back in focus. Hong Kong dropped more than two percent, with property firms taking a heavy hit on worries over the future of New World Development after it deferred interest payments on some bonds. The firm is in the middle of a loan refinancing drive as it looks to raise more than US$11 billion from banks. Its struggles have revived fears about China's property sector as companies struggle to sell stock to help pay off their bulging debts. Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore, Taipei, Manila and Jakarta also fell, with Shanghai closed for a holiday. Oil prices surged after Opec and other key producers hiked output for July but less than expected, while geopolitical fears were ramped up after Ukraine hit air bases deep inside Russia, raising concerns over an escalation of the three-year war. The dollar also retreated on concerns about the US economy as Trump continues to push a bill to extend tax cuts and slash welfare spending, which observers say will add trillions to the already gargantuan national debt. That has sent shivers through the Treasuries market, with yields pushing higher as investors seek out better returns for lending the government money. Worries about US debt led Moody's to lower the US last top-ranking credit rating, warning it expects US federal deficits to widen dramatically over the next decade. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon voiced concern Sunday at the risk of a looming US debt market crisis sparked by Trump's policies. 'It's a big deal. It is a real problem,' Dimon told Maria Bartiromo on FOX Business Network's 'Mornings with Maria' show, according to an excerpt of the interview that will air in full Monday. 'The bond market is going to have a tough time. I don't know if it's six months or six years,' he said.

LOS ANGELES, June 2 — Disney's family-friendly Lilo & Stitch, a live-action remake of the 2002 animated film, won the North American box office for a second week in a row, taking in another US$63 million (RM268 million), industry estimates showed Sunday. So far, its worldwide take is at a whopping US$610 million, Exhibitor Relations said. Maia Kealoha (as Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis star, while Chris Sanders again provides the voice of the chaos-creating blue alien Stitch. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning — the latest, and ostensibly last, in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series based on a 1960s TV show — took second place with US$27.3 million in the United States and Canada. The Paramount film has made another US$231 million overseas, which should help offset its massive production budget, reportedly at US$400 million. Debuting in a disappointing third place was Sony's Karate Kid: Legends, a sequel featuring Ralph Macchio — the star of the original 1984 classic — and action flick icon Jackie Chan, along with Ben Wang in the title role. It made US$21 million at the domestic box office and another US$26 million overseas. 'Legends is trying to invigorate the story with a new Kid — again — but business is not strong,' said David A.
