McEwen Copper requests major tax breaks for Los Azules copper mine in Argentina

Reuters12-02-2025

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Canadian miner McEwen Copper, a subsidiary of McEwen Mining (MUX.TO), opens new tab, has submitted a request to join an Argentine government incentives program that would give it significant tax breaks for its Los Azules copper project in San Juan province, it said.
McEwen plans to invest $2.7 billion in the mine. It has committed $227 million under the Argentine government's Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) to carry out the mine's feasibility study, do exploration works, and prepare for construction.
The company could pour an additional $2.5 billion into the site to build the mine and production facilities under the incentives mechanism if approved, it said in a statement late on Tuesday.
Once the government gives McEwen the green light, its corporate tax rate for the Los Azules project will fall from 35% to 25%, and it will be exempt from value-added tax during construction and from export duties.
"Argentina is once again opening its doors to business activity," said Robert McEwen, head and top stakeholder in McEwen Mining.
Los Azules could kick off construction in early 2026, pending environmental permits, a feasibility study and the RIGI tax approval, the firm said.
The mine is one of Argentina's prime copper projects, located 3,500 meters above sea level in the Andean mountain range.
Argentina is mineral rich and could be key to meeting growing demand for copper due to the energy transition, but it has not produced the metal since 2018 when the Alumbrera mine was shuttered.

Canada agrees to ratify Britain's accession to major trans-Pacific trade pact

Ottawa will seek to introduce legislation to its parliament this autumn to formally approve Britain's entry to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The UK joined the bloc in 2024, but Canada is yet to ratify its accession – meaning Britain still faces pre-CPTPP trade barriers in exporting to the country. Following a bilateral meeting between the Prime Minister and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on Sunday, Downing Street said: 'Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canada would ratify the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), seeking to introduce legislation to their parliament in the autumn. 'This will bring huge benefits to UK businesses by lowering tariffs when buying from and selling to Canada. 'They also agreed to set up a joint taskforce to turbocharge progress on other areas of mutual benefit, including technology and artificial intelligence – in support of shared growth and our national security. 'The taskforce will also look to make progress on the wider UK-Canada Free Trade Agreement.'

'Canada is an independent, sovereign country': PM backs Carney against Trump

Keir Starmer will support Canada's determination to remain a sovereign independent nation, against pressure from Donald Trump for it to become America's 51st state. In a briefing to journalists en route to the G7 meeting of the leaders of wealthy democracies, Starmer said: 'Let me be absolutely clear: Canada is an independent, sovereign country and a much-valued member of the Commonwealth.' He is meeting Canada's new prime minister Mark Carney – who used to be governor of the Bank of England – in Ottawa today and tomorrow. Carney recently won Canada's general election by loudly and proudly telling Trump that his country will never be part of America. His defiance helped his party to eliminate its huge deficit in opinion polls. But Starmer pointed out there is already '£28bn worth of trade between the UK and Canada as it stands.' He added: 'One of the things I want to do is to open the door to taking out further…reducing our trade barriers with Canada. So I'm really clear where we stand on that.' Of the world leaders who will meet in Alberta on Monday and Tuesday, only Italy's Georgia Meloni probably has a closer relations to Trump. Starmer didn't rule out acting as a bridge or go-between between G7 leaders and the American president. He said: 'I have got a good relationship with President Trump, and that's important, as you can see from the fact that we had a discussion yesterday about the urgent situation in relation to Israel and Iran. 'I'm very pleased that I have developed good relations with all the G7 leaders to the point where I have very good relations with all of them.'
