Toronto FC still looking for first win at home after losing to New England Revolution

Injury-depleted Toronto FC continues its search for a first home win of the Major League Soccer season after a 2-0 loss to the resurgent New England Revolution on Saturday.

Carles Gil and Leo Campana scored for New England (5-4-1), which came into the game with just seven goals in its previous nine games. The Revs could have added significantly more to that total had it not been for Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

The final whistle was greeted by a chorus of boos at BMO Field.

After a 1-4-1 start to the season, New England has won four straight by blanking Atlanta, New York City FC, Charlotte FC and now Toronto. The Revs, having switched to a back three, extended their shutout streak to 385 minutes in front of Slovenian goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.

In contrast, Toronto (1-6-4) has not scored in league play at home in 439 minutes, dating back to Deandre Kerr's goal April 5 in a 2-1 loss to Chicago. TFC is 0-3-2 at BMO Field this season with its last home win Sept. 14, a 2-1 decision over Austin FC.

But Toronto came into the game having lost just one its last five league outings (1-1-3), a 1-0 defeat at the hands of New York City FC last Saturday.

While Toronto had plenty of the ball in the first half, it was New England that took advantage of its chances.

Gil put the Revs ahead in the 11th minute with their first shot on goal. After a Kosi Thompson giveaway, wingback Ilay Feingold sent in a cross that Toronto defender Nicksoen Gomis got his head to, only to see the ball go straight to Gil who acrobatically volleyed it home from just inside the penalty box.

Gil has five of New England's nine goals this season, including three from the penalty spot. And with Saturday's strike, he joins San Jose's Cristiano Espinoza as the only active players to be within the top five of both goals and assists for an original MLS club.

Campana made it 2-0 in the 27th minute, capping a rapid-fire counter-attack with a low shot that beat Johnson. The play began deep in the New England end when Federico Bernardeschi lost the ball. Six passes later it was in the Toronto goal.

Johnson made several big saves in the first half, including a spectacular one-handed stop on Ignatius Ganago in injury time, to limit the damage to two goals as the visitors began to find gaps in the Toronto defence.

And some in the supporters section in the south stand walked out during the first half in an apparent protest at the team's recent play. A banner reading 'This Badge Don't Belong To You!!!' was unfurled at one point. Another banner read 'Accept Existence or Expect Resistance.'

George Springer hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Saturday. Springer went deep against Twins reliever Griffin Jax (1-4), who allowed a leadoff double to Addison Barger one at-bat earlier. Springer's 10th homer of the season made it 4-3 just as a light rain started falling at Target Field. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tacked on an insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the ninth off Twins closer Jhoan Durán. Chad Green (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Jeff Hoffman allowed a solo homer in the ninth to Kody Clemens but still earned his 15th save. Minnesota took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Matt Wallner. The Twins DH went deep to right against Toronto starter Kevin Gausman, his second homer in the past three days. Gausman didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Twins' first hit by Ryan Jeffers sparked a two-run inning that tied the game. Twins starter Chris Paddack allowed runs in each of the first two innings but settled down after that. Paddack faced the minimum in the third and fifth innings. Minnesota had the bases loaded in the seventh but came up empty as Carlos Correa flew out to end the threat. Barger's leadoff double helped set the tone in the eighth. He found plenty of space in left field to easily put the tying run in scoring position against Jax. With a no-decision in Saturday's game, Gausman has just one win in 14 career starts against the Twins. He has a career 6.44 ERA versus Minnesota. Toronto RHP Bowden Francis (2-7, 5.84 ERA) takes the mound for Sunday's series finale, looking for his first win since April 18. The Twins will counter with RHP Joe Ryan (6-2, 2.91), who has won four of his last five starts.

Tajon, Buchanan, Jonathan David lead the way as Canada downs Ukraine 4-2
Tajon Buchanan scored a goal and set up two more by Jonathan David as Canada defeated Ukraine 4-2 on Saturday in the opening game of the inaugural Canadian Shield Tournament in Toronto. Promise David, no relation, also scored for Canada in his senior debut. Both Ukraine goals came in the dying minutes. Illia Zabarnyi scored in the 89th minute, tapping home a teammate's header to cheers from the pro-Ukraine crowd. Arsenal's Oleksandr Zinchenko added another from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Buchanan was pinged for handball in the Canadian penalty box. It was an impressive outing, full of offensive flair, by the 30th-ranked Canadian men in their first outing since finishing third at the CONCACAF Nations League Finals in March. And when No. 25 Ukraine threatened, goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was up to the task for the first 88 minutes. Jonathan David upped his Canadian men's record goal total to 34 in 62 appearances. Buchanan, meanwhile, looked back to his electric self on the wing. The ball came right back to David who made no mistake with a second header. That drew chants of Canada, Canada. Crepeau made a pair of key saves soon after to preserve Canada's lead, denying an attempted chip by Zinchenko after making an acrobatic save from close-range. Buchanan and Jonathan David combined again in the 24th minute with David, off a Buchanan cross, deftly, flicking a header backwards past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, who plays in Portugal for Benfica. Promise David, who scored 24 goals in all competitions for Belgian champion Union Saint-Gilloise this season, made it 3-0 in the 31st minute, pouncing on an errant pass by defender Valeriy Bondar before sliding a low shot through Trubin to open his Canada account. David, a local boy who had friends and family in the stand, celebrated with an enthusiastic slide towards the corner flag. Daniel Jebbison, who plays in England for Bournemouth, came on to start the second half for his second cap, in place of Promise David. Ukraine's Heorhiy Sudakov had a glorious chance in the 72nd minute but put his header over the crossbar. The Canadians were not as connected in the second half although Jonathan David came close to his hat-trick in the 75th, only to see his redirect go high. Substitute Jayden Nelson hit the goalpost in the 78th minute. Jonathan David extended a minute later to a standing ovation. Buchanan made it 3-0 in the 81st minute, outmuscling a defender in front of goal to knock home a ball headed his way off a Canadian free kick for his fifth Canadian goal. Canada improved to 7-4-5 under coach Jesse Marsch with one of these ties turning into a penalty shootout win over Venezuela and another into a shootout loss to Uruguay, both at last summer's Copa America. Canada's previous scoring high under Marsch was a 3-0 win over No. 137 Suriname in November 2024. Marsch, who said he planned to use his entire roster across the two games, fielded a young, relatively inexperienced squad. The starting 11 went into the game with a combined 241 caps, with 186 of those supplied by Buchanan, David, captain Stephen Eustaquio and Derek Cornelius. Five Canada starters —- Promise David, Zorhan Bassong, Luc de Fougerolles, Nathan Saliba and Niko Sigur — went into the game with three caps or less. The average age of the Canadian starting 11 was 22.5 years. Marsch said some of his roster selection was enforced, given Nelson, Sam Adekugbe and Ali Ahmed missed training after arriving sick in the Canadian camp in Halifax following the Vancouver Whitecaps' trip to Mexico for last Sunday's CONCACAF Champions Cup final loss to Cruz Azul. Nelson came in off the bench in the 64th minute. Ukraine also went to its bench, with goalkeeper Dmytro Riznk of Shakhtar Donets replacing Trubin in the 66th minute.
