The Group of Seven summit is opening in Canada with a focus on trade, wars -- and not riling Trump

Washington Post7 hours ago

KANANASKIS, Alberta — When U.S. President Donald Trump last came to Canada for a Group of Seven summit , the enduring image was of him seated with his arms folded defiantly as then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel stared daggers at him.
If there is a shared mission at this year's G7 summit, which begins Monday in Canada's Rocky Mountains, it is a desire to minimize any fireworks at a moment of combustible tensions.

Headline of the year: 'He voted for Trump. Then [INSERT CATASTROPHE]'

In any honest-to-goodness story about Trump voter disillusionment, there's a key quote from the disaffected party — a confession to having been jilted. A March NPR story carries perhaps the most gobsmacking version; it explains how Arab Trump supporters in Michigan reacted to President Donald Trump's approach to the Gaza conflict, particularly a video projecting a gilded 'Trump Gaza' development and featuring Trump and Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu sunbathing with drinks in hand.

Live updates: Trump participates in G-7 amid military conflict between Israel, Iran

President Donald Trump is attending the opening day of the Group of Seven summit in Canada on Monday, where some of the staunchest and oldest U.S. allies are expected to discuss tariffs and the escalating military conflict between Israel and Iran — all while attempting to avoid direct confrontations with the mercurial U.S. president. While Trump began his international trip, U.S. law enforcement arrested a suspect Sunday evening in the shooting of two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses in what officials described as politically motivated attacks. The day after tanks and soldiers paraded through Washington and protesters poured into streets across the country, cleanup crews on Sunday moved the nation's capital back toward normalcy — their vehicles clanging, banging and beeping as they disassembled the setting of the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary celebration. A former senior Syrian security official has told the FBI that American freelance journalist Austin Tice was killed in 2013 on the orders of President Bashar al-Assad, an account that has not been corroborated by the United States but marks the first time a senior official in the Assad regime has spoken to U.S. officials about Tice's fate. COPENHAGEN — French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland on Sunday, saying he was bringing 'a message of solidarity and friendship' from France and the European Union to a strategic Arctic territory that President Donald Trump has vowed to 'get' for the United States 'one way or another.' Asked by a reporter about Trump's promise to somehow annex Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, Macron responded, 'I don't think that's what allies do.'
