Israel says killed Hezbollah commander in Lebanon strike

Daily Tribune07-04-2025

An Israeli strike Monday on southern Lebanon killed one person, according to the health ministry, with Israel's military saying it had "eliminated" a Hezbollah commander in the latest raid despite a truce.
Israel has continued to launch strikes on Lebanon since the November 27 ceasefire that largely halted more than a year of hostilities with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group including two months of all-out war.
The Lebanese health ministry said in a statement that an "Israeli enemy" strike on Monday on the town of Taybeh, near the border, "led to the death of one citizen".
The Israeli military said its forces "eliminated... Hezbollah's artillery commander in the Taybeh area", alleging that during the war, he had "directed and carried out numerous projectile attacks toward the Upper Galilee area" in northern Israel.
Lebanon's official National News Agency (NNA) said the strike hit "in front of a motorcycle repair shop" in the town, in south Lebanon's Marjayoun district.
On Sunday, Lebanon said an Israeli strike killed two people in south Lebanon's Zibqin, as the Israeli military said it targeted Hezbollah operatives in the area.
The NNA also reported Israeli strikes on prefabricated homes in south Lebanon's Naqura area on Sunday. Such structures have usually been set up for returning residents whose homes were destroyed in the conflict.
Israeli strikes last week also targeted other south Lebanon locations and even Hezbollah's south Beirut bastion.

Middle East ‘On Edge' as International Coalition Reaffirms Support for Palestine Peace Plan

The co-chairs of the international conference on peacefully resolving the Palestinian issue and advancing the two-state solution — led by Saudi Arabia and France — expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning that the region is facing a "fragile and dangerous" moment. The statement comes amid growing fears of a broader conflict, particularly following the recent intensification of hostilities between Israel and Iran. The co-chairs, speaking on behalf of several international and regional partners, emphasized the urgent need to restore calm and push forward with diplomatic efforts. They also confirmed that the recent developments have forced the postponement of the high-level United Nations conference focused on the implementation of the two-state solution. Despite the delay, the co-chairs reaffirmed their full commitment to the goals of the initiative. They noted that the working group leaders will soon announce new dates for upcoming roundtable discussions, which aim to transform the contributions of various countries into concrete and coordinated international commitments that support the two-state solution. 'This moment demands that we double down on our efforts to uphold international law, respect the sovereignty of all nations, and promote peace, freedom, and dignity for everyone in the region,' the statement read, referencing the ongoing Israeli strikes on Iran since last Friday. The joint leadership also reiterated its unwavering support for all efforts to end the war in Gaza and to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue through the two-state framework — a path they believe is essential for ensuring long-term security and stability in the region. The statement was signed by the co-chairs, Saudi Arabia and France, along with the heads of working groups representing a wide coalition that includes Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Norway, Qatar, Senegal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the Arab League. This international conference serves as a platform for coordinated actions aimed at ending the occupation and recognizing an independent Palestinian state, based on international law, relevant UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the joint Peace Day Effort.

Over 700 foreigners flee Iran to Azerbaijan, Armenia

AFP | More than 700 foreigners living in Iran have crossed into neighbouring Azerbaijan and Armenia since Israel began striking the country last week, government officials in Baku and Yerevan said Tuesday. The Caucasus countries border Iran's northwest, with the closest crossing into Azerbaijan around 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Tehran by road. "Since the start of the military escalation between Israel and Iran, more than 600 citizens of 17 countries have been evacuated from Iran via Azerbaijan," a government source told AFP on Tuesday. The evacuees, who crossed the border via the Astara checkpoint on the Caspian Sea coast, are being transported to Baku airport and "flown to their home countries on international flights", the source said. Among those evacuated are citizens of post-Soviet countries Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, along with others from Germany, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Portugal, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, China and Vietnam. Israel has launched waves of strikes on Iran since Friday, saying it aims to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon -- a goal Iran denies pursuing. The Israeli attacks have killed at least 224 people and wounded more than 1,000, according to an official toll released Sunday. In retaliation, Iran has carried out attacks that have killed at least 24 people in Israel since Friday, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office.
