James Cameron Hires Martin Sheen for GHOSTS OF HIROSHIMA Audiobook as He Preps Film About Survivor of Both A-Bombs — GeekTyrant
James Cameron is finally making his long-awaited return to non-Avatar filmmaking, and he's doing it with a haunting story about a man in Japan who survived both A-bomb blasts.
The director has hiredMartin Sheen to narrate the audiobook of Ghosts of Hiroshima , a new work by Charles Pellegrino, and Cameron plans to adapt the book into a feature film once Avatar production allows.
'Martin Sheen is my dream come true to read this book for audio,' Cameron said. 'His voice-over narration for Apocalypse Now still haunts me, and for a subject this dark, he will give it the gravitas and humanity that it needs.'
The book, set to be released by Blackstone Publishing on August 5th, marking the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
It tells the staggering true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a man who survived both atomic bombings in Japan during WWII. He lived through Hiroshima, boarded a train to Nagasaki, and endured a second nuclear blast.
Ghosts of Hiroshima blends personal accounts from survivors with cutting-edge forensic archaeology to examine the aftermath in vivid, often painful detail.
'It's a subject that I've wanted to do a film about, that I've been wrestling with how to do it, over the years,' Cameron explained. 'I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just days before he died. He was in the hospital. He was handing the baton of his personal story to us, so I have to do it. I can't turn away from it.'
Cameron and Pellegrino, who also collaborated on Titanic and Avatar , and whose scientific writings helped inspire Jurassic Park , pledged during that hospital visit to honor Yamaguchi's wish: that the world remember and learn from what happened.
And if there's a filmmaker who knows how to handle large-scale catastrophe stories with both spectacle and heart, it's Cameron. He describes the upcoming film as an 'uncompromising theatrical film,' one that won't shy away from the subject's emotional or historical weight.
The film will mark Cameron's first non-Avatar feature since Titanic in 1997. The themes in the story aren't exactly new territory for him either. His fear of nuclear devastation, planted at the age of 8 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, has long influenced his work from The Terminator films to Aliens .
Blackstone, which also released the bestselling audiobook of Oppenheimer, sees the Cameron-Sheen team-up as a landmark collaboration. I remember learning about this story years ago, and it's one that has always stuck me. I'm looking forward to seeing Cameron bring it to life for the big screen.

For AWGE's sophomore coed collection, titled 'Obligatory Clothing,' the rapper-turned-designer zeroed in on archetypes that went from suit-wearing lawyers and paramedics to youths in hair curlers and XXL streetwear, a glamourpuss wearing a trench over a micro-miniskirt and louche types in satin playing card prints – what you think they do for a living is on you. 'For me, this whole 'Obligatory Fashion' statement was just [about] how you take the simple uniform or the purpose of a uniform, and how people correlate that to profession, lifestyle and everything,' Rocky said after the show. By the time the hammer fell in the 'City Court of AWGE,' as one print indicated, the verdict was: if sharp tailoring is a crime, the brand is guilty as charged. Here, he continued to refine the ideas introduced in his first effort, and served his purpose of skewing perception. Suit jackets looked classic from the front and were backless; tailored trousers were split into a skirt; shirts turned into crisp halter tops; sagging trousers had six waistbands – half boxer shorts, half denim ones. Elsewhere, his eye for tweaking proportions just so came through strongly, as evidenced by a workwear suit cut oversized which felt dressed up under the combined influence of cropped trousers and red-soled patent Mary-Janes. It was the kind of detail that made his designs stand up to sartorial scrutiny. There were plenty of accessories to further mix things up, like paper bags with a flower peeking from the glass bottle inside, which brought Banksy's famous Flower Thrower mural to mind. The musical artist's collaborations were also represented. Eyewear and clutches shaped like XXL cases nodded to his role as creative director of Ray-Ban. Feet were clad in the upcoming Puma Mostro Gabbia and a distressed iteration on the Speedcat model. Those Mary-Janes and stilettos were from Christian Louboutin and came with bedazzled charms made by jewelry label Pavē Niteō, which is under the A$AP Rocky Ventures, Inc. umbrella. Pointed commentary on recent and current events as well as his own experiences was palpable but delivered with a light touch. 'I'm gonna put all of these things into my fashion to tell my story without having it to be so like 'look, I'm controversial and political,'' he said. 'I'm just showing you the way I see it in little nifty ways.' Just as pointed is his retail strategy. After available exclusively on the brand's website for its debut, the brand will now be opening to wholesale accounts. But don't expect to see AWGE on every major retail floor. 'I want to start off very niche…small, limited and exclusive,' Rocky said. 'There's no way to do that in an environment that's oversaturated with new brands, old brands.' Plus, 'there's just a lot going on in the global economy – it's f–ed, pardon my French, for lack of better words,' he continued. 'And I think I have a particular customer, and I want to target that customer [who] loves, grieves and agrees with everything that I like, my taste, my values, my lifestyle, my past, my conflictions and my story.' And that customer may get their hands on the goods sooner than they think: the brand announced it was holding a sample sale in Paris on Sunday and Monday. Belgium rolled out the blue carpet Saturday (June 28) for Rihanna and other stars who turned out for the world premiere of the new Smurfs movie. Rihanna produced Smurfs and voices Smurfette in the summer family film, a live-action animated reboot that takes the little creatures on a Smurfette-led rescue mission to save Papa Smurf. A$AP Rocky, with whom Rihanna is expecting her third child, served as co-chair of this year's Met Gala, alongside Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton, while LeBron James served as honorary chair. Culture and community shine at Woodland celebration
Residents and out-of-town visitors alike attended the Woodland Cultural Centre's National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Heather George, Executive Director of the Woodland Cultural Centre, said she was happy to see the community come together to celebrate the day. 'It's been so fantastic to see the turnout and to see so many community members from Six Nations and Brantford coming out, meeting each other in this space and getting to share in our culture,' she said. 'Our most favourite thing to do here at Woodland is to bring people together and do it in these really beautiful ways, so it's just been an amazing day.' Throughout the duration of the free event, guests of all ages had the opportunity to enjoy several musical performances from artists like David Moses, James Wilson and DJ MossKing, as well as a children's storytelling session with Arihhonni David. Over in the craft tent, Woodland's education department set up various creative workshops where visitors like Julien Greene and Callum Clarke, could try their hand at painting with watercolour, or crafting their own pottery, drums and rattles. Many guests also took the opportunity to head over to an open field to partake in a lacrosse demonstration with Kedoh Hill, or shop from the many vendor booths set up around the grounds. From hand-beaded jewellery to captivating pieces of art, ribbon skirts and even mouth-watering foods and drinks, there were plenty of ways to support the artists and small business owners on site. 'I think today is a really good opportunity, especially for non-Indigenous people to learn about the culture and the heritage. It's fantastic because, often the programming that happens on National Indigenous Peoples Day kind of surrounds the art space and so, it's a lot of fun, it's really inclusive and everybody gets a chance to participate,' said George. 'I think it's also a really good entry point for people who are trying to learn more about things like treaties or land rights, but this is kind of the fun, soft entrance into some of those harder topics. It's just such a great day for people to engage in this programming, and to continue to build those opportunities for people to learn.' On top of all of the activities happening outdoors, visitors also had the chance to step inside for a gallery tour with Woodland's guest Curator, Alex Jacobs-Blum, for the public opening of Indigenous Art 2025: 50th Annual Juried Exhibition. Indigenous Art was first launched back in 1975 and is now the longest-running annual multimedia Indigenous art exhibition in the country. This year's show is featured across all three of Woodland's gallery spaces and will run until Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Harmony Sabourin and Daylen Hill were just a couple of the guests viewing the gallery's new display. 'It's all just so beautiful,' said Sabourin. 'I really love art and so, it's been really inspiring to see all of these works, especially the beadwork on canvas… it's just so amazing to me.' The two were more than happy to share a few of the pieces that caught their attention including Jessica Somers' 'Morning Dance,' Janice Toulouse's 'Abiinoojiiyag Jiibi Native Children's Hidden Bones' and Emily Kewageshig's 'Walk Gently.' For those who couldn't make it out on the day, George said that she encouraged people to stop by Woodland and check out the gallery, especially now that the centre's new hours are Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Kimberly De Jong's reporting is funded by the Canadian government through its Local Journalism Initiative.
