Grizzlies retaining Tuomas Iisalo as head coach after brief interim period
Tuomas Iisalo will continue his head coaching duties with the Memphis Grizzlies next season after the franchise dropped the interim tag on Friday.
Iisalo took over the position on March 28 after Memphis fired coach Taylor Jenkins in a shocking move with nine games left in the regular season.
'I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies going forward,' Grizzlies president and general manager of basketball operations Zach Kleiman said in a statement. 'Tuomas' teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both sides of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis.'
The first-time head coach was asked to lead Memphis through a tumultuous period as it suffered through a late-season spiral that led to Jenkins' firing and ended with the team dropping from No. 2 to No. 8 in the Western Conference standings before the start of the playoffs.
With Iisalo as interim head coach, the Grizzlies went 4-5 in the regular season before making it through the Play-In Tournament as the No. 8 seed. Memphis was swept in the first round by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.

Iisalo, the first Finnish-born head coach in NBA history, showed signs of development in his short stint as interim head coach, and Grizzlies star Ja Morant endorsed Iisalo's candidacy to remain head coach after the season was over.
'I feel like Tuomas is a good coach,' Morant said during his end-of-season press conference last Sunday. 'For me, going into my film sessions with him or just talking about the game of basketball, seeing and hearing that he sees the same thing I see out there on the floor. I wouldn't say it's been surprising, but it's been very exciting.'

Grizzlies' Ja Morant Makes Major Career Move
Grizzlies' Ja Morant Makes Major Career Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Memphis Grizzlies drafted Ja Morant with the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Morant has career averages of 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.4 assists. He signed a five-year, $197 million extension with Memphis in 2022. Advertisement However, the Grizzlies have won only one postseason series since drafting Morant, who has been suspended by the NBA twice for showing a gun on Instagram Live. A two-time All-Star, Morant appeared in 50 games for the Grizzlies this season. He averaged 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.3 assists while shooting 45.4% from the field, 30.9% from 3 and 82.4% from the foul line. Memphis was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of this year's playoffs. Morant missed Game 4 after getting hurt in Game 3. Ja Morant doesn't have an agent anymore. Petre Thomas-Imagn Images The 25-year-old Morant has stayed out of the news until Thursday, as Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that the point guard has parted ways with Lift Sports Management. Advertisement Morant joined Lift, an agency headed by former NBA forward Mike Miller, in April 2024. "All indications are that the relationship between the Grizzlies and Morant remains strong," Cole wrote. "Morant could look to partner with another agency that best represents his goals. Another option for the Grizzlies star is self-representation." Morant will make $39.4 million next season, $42.2 million in 2026-27 and $44.8 million in 2027-28, the final year of his contract. Morant is eligible to sign a two-year extension this offseason. It's unknown if the Grizzlies will sign their best player to another lucrative contract. Former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins a candidate for Knicks coaching job
Could former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins be back in the NBA next season? Jenkins was fired by the Grizzlies in March. He's now a candidate for the Knicks coaching vacancy, according to a report by The Athletic's Sam Amick. Advertisement The Knicks have had a bizarre start to their coaching search after firing Tom Thibodeau. They have reportedly attempted to set up interviews with several current coaches, including the Timberwolves' Chris Finch, Rockets' Ime Udoka, Hawks' Quin Snyder, Bulls' Billy Donovan and Mavericks' Jason Kidd, but were rebuffed by all those teams. New York has now apparently moved on to other candidates, including Jenkins and former Kings coach Mike Brown. 'Yet with the Knicks seemingly shooting air balls left and right in pursuit of employed head coaches, league sources say there is an increased Knicks focus on two former coaches who don't require permission to pursue: Mike Brown (last with the Sacramento Kings) and Taylor Jenkins (formerly of the Memphis Grizzlies),' Amick wrote. 'There could certainly be more names of (available) head coaches emerging soon, as a league source said the Knicks are planning on finalizing that list in the coming days. But Brown, in particular, profiles as an interesting option given the complicated nature of the Knicks' inner circle.' More: Intense prep, speed, 'murderball': What makes Memphis Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo tick Advertisement Jenkins was hired as Grizzlies coach in 2019 and became the winningest coach in franchise history during the 2024-25 season. But he was fired with nine games remaining in the regular season after the Grizzlies backslid defensively and ultimately only made the playoffs through the play-in tournament. Tuomas Iisalo, who had been Jenkins' lead assistant, was promoted to interim coach for the rest of the season and was named full-time coach after the season.
