Peoria Public Schools holds 2nd annual Multicultural Fair

Yahoo10-05-2025

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Peoria Public Schools showcased the diversity in the community at the second annual Multicultural Fair at the Peoria Riverfront Museum on Saturday.
The fair is designed to highlight diversity and unity within the school system. From Mexico to the Dominican Republic to Jamaica and Nigeria, teachers from the Peoria Public Schools Teacher Exchange Program shared their cultural traditions.
They also featured international teachers from Kankakee School District 111, which currently has 25 international teachers on staff.
Breaija Bryant with Peoria Public Schools said it's all about broadening the cultural horizon of students.
'A lot of our families have never really left Peoria, and if they had, it might be to Chicago or still in Illinois. And there's just like a really deep, cultural divide sometimes when you don't see it for yourself. So now they get to experience it, and then they just become culturally diverse. They adapt, and they just become well-rounded,' said Bryant.
Peoria Public Schools has 117 international teachers on staff.

Disney says its California and Florida resorts drive national prosperity

Aiming to shed light on the impact of its domestic resorts on the U.S. economy, Disney commissioned a study to put a number on it. Tourism Economics found Disney's Florida and California resorts have a combined nationwide economic impact of nearly $67 billion, indicating that Disney's two domestic theme park locations "are key economic engines not only in their respective regional economies, but also in the nationwide economy," said Michael Mariano, Tourism Economics' head of economic development. Mariano and his team have studied the economic impact of Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort in recent years. Travel is an area of focus for Tourism Economics, which has worked with clients like TripAdvisor, Airbnb and the U.S. Travel Association in the past. He gave a virtual media briefing this week to share the results, which marks the first time Disney has combined total economic impact from both resorts to paint a nationwide picture of the company's impact. Mariano has analyzed the impacts of Disneyland on Southern California's economy for the last seven months, honing in on fiscal year 2024. His team previously studied the same for Disney World's impact on Florida for fiscal year 2022. Both studies employed similar methodology. That methodology includes analyzing three components, Mariano said: direct impacts, indirect impacts and induced impacts. Direct impacts are defined as all economic activity directly associated with Disney guests and visitors. For instance, that includes all sales on site, as well as spending outside of the resort, like at the airport, on transportation, and at off-property venues like hotels and restaurants. Indirect impacts, Mariano said, encompass the supply-side effect, or the goods and services Disney purchases from local providers. Induced impacts come from Disney and tourism-related employees' wage and salary spend within the regional economy. Using that methodology, Mariano found that Disneyland's economic impact in the 2024 fiscal year totaled $16.1 billion in Southern California. "Now, to put this in context, that's almost as much as American consumers spent on pizza delivery in 2024," he said. Disneyland directly and indirectly supports more than 102,000 jobs in the region, with nearly 75% of total job impact including jobs within Orange County. Disneyland is the largest employer in the county with approximately 36,000 cast members. It contributed $2.6 billion in total tax revenues. For the fiscal year 2022, Disney World generated a total economic impact of $40.3 billion within Florida, supporting 263,000 jobs. In addition to the resorts' regional impacts, Mariano said, they generated an additional $10.2 billion in economic activity throughout the rest of the country. That figure includes purchases by both resorts from suppliers and vendors. Combining that nationwide figure with regional impacts, he said, results in a total economic impact of nearly $67 billion in the U.S. "To add some color to this number, consider that the two resorts' total combined impact of $67 billion was nearly as much as U.S. consumers spent on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween combined in 2024," Mariano said. In addition to supporting 403,000 jobs across various industries and businesses in the country, he said, Disney also supported "thousands of small businesses throughout the country."

Anderson family sells stake in Avoya Travel to Certares

The Anderson family has sold its stake in Avoya Travel to Certares, the private equity firm that invested in the host agency in 2021. Certares has acquired full ownership of the company. Co-CEOs Jeff Anderson and Michael Anderson will remain with Avoya through mid-June to assist in the transition. Other members of Avoya's executive leadership team -- including chief sales officer Phil Cappelli and CFO Mark Francone -- remain with the host agency. "We're grateful to Jeff Anderson and Michael Anderson, who helped build Avoya into an innovative leader in leisure travel," Avoya said in a statement. The Anderson family had operated Avoya for decades. The late Pal Anderson, Avoya's founder, and his wife, Pat, entered the travel industry with a tour operation in Hawaii in 1964. They would go on to start a retail travel agency that eventually became Avoya. Its hosting operation began alongside the rise of the internet in the early 2000s. Pat and Pal's sons, Brad and Van, ran the company for years before handing over the reins to Jeff and Michael.

This Is the No. 1 City in the U.S. for BBQ, According to Yelp

It's a statistical fact that warm weather makes people want to buy barbecue foods. With the (hot) dog days of summer just around the corner, that means any second now you're going to start craving something grilled, charred, and smothered in sauce. And Yelp knows exactly where you should go to get it. Yelp compiled a list of the top cities in the U.S. for "smoked meats and mouth-watering barbecue sauces." It explained in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure that it created the list by ranking each location using a "blended metric including consumer interest in BBQ, total business count, and average business rating." It noted that it limited this year's list to two cities per state to "ensure geographic diversity." After looking at all the data, unsurprisingly, Austin won. "Austin reigns supreme as the No. 1 region for barbecue," Yelp shared. "Whether you like slow-smoked beef brisket, pork ribs, or house-made sausages, Austin has earned its reputation as a top barbecue destination." It noted that Austin has earned this reputation thanks to beloved spots like Terry Black's Barbecue and food trucks like Micklethwait Craft Meat in East Austin, which both earn high praise from Yelp users. "Yelp users praise Austin's barbecue for its simple seasonings, which let the quality of the meat shine. Trays of tender brisket, flavorful ribs, and pulled pork sandwiches are among the most photographed dishes," it added. "Many users also highlight the perfectly tender texture of the meats at spots like Interstellar BBQ and Salt Lick BBQ." Also at the top of the list is San Antonio, which came in at No. 2. "The area's diverse barbecue scene includes food trucks like Brisket Boys and Cake-N-Que, which showcase a variety of smoked meat styles," Yelp shared. It's followed by Kansas City, Missouri, which earned high praise thanks to its "signature sauce and legendary burnt ends" at restaurants like Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, which "boasts more than 3,500 5-star reviews. Then there's Memphis, Tennessee, which Yelp noted is "well-known for its dry-rub ribs and pulled pork, offered at beloved restaurants like Cozy Corner and Elwood's Shack." And rounding out the top five is Charleston, South Carolina, which ranked highly thanks to its traditional Lowcountry styles. "With a mix of historic BBQ joints like Poogan's Smokehouse and modern, pitmaster-driven spots likePalmira Barbecue, Charleston blends time-honored smoking techniques with innovative flavors that Yelp users love," the site added.
