Multiple guilty verdicts in man's 2023 murder in Gilligan's Island area of Camden County
Two people were found guilty by a jury of a man's 2023 murder in the Gilligan's Island area of Camden County.
Frank Patrick Kennedy, 56, and Anthony Scott Mistretta, 29, were found guilty April 2 of malice murder, felony murder, and other felony charges in the killing of 29-year-old John Andrew Mamph, the District Attorney's Office for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit announced in a news release Wednesday.
During the trial, Deputy Chief ADA Hal Moroz presented 15 witnesses and dozens of evidentiary exhibits.
After the guilty verdict, Kennedy and Mistretta were sentenced by Superior Court Judge Anthony Harrison to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The District Attorney's Office said Mamph's killing was a 'brutal, torture and murder.'
Kennedy and Mistretta 'beat and hog-tied Mamph near his homeless encampment at 'Gilligan's Island'' on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, the District Attorney's Office said.
Gilligan's Island is a remote area off Highway 40 in St. Marys.
Investigators said Kennedy and Mistretta put Mamph onto a boat at a nearby lake, weighed his body down with weights, and then submerged him in the water.

A person jet skiing with his family discovered Mamph's body the next day, Thursday, July 6, 2023, 'in the clear water,' the District Attorney's Office said.
St. Marys Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified and located suspects and conducted interviews at SMPD headquarters late Thursday, July 6, 2023, and into the early morning on Friday, July 7, 2023.
After the interviews, 'sufficient evidence was gathered to confirm the circumstances' leading to Mamph's death, and the five arrests were made, SMPD said at the time of the arrests.
Originally, five people were arrested in connection with Mamph's murder. Here is the current status of those defendants who entered pleas before Kennedy and Mistretta's trial:
Debra Leane Dougherty, 38, pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Dougherty will spend 30 years in prison before she is eligible for parole.
Bernice Rose McGuire, 27, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and has yet to be sentenced.
Megan Leigh Robison, 34, who initially lied to law enforcement about her knowledge of the events on July 5, 2023, pleaded guilty to making a false statement and was sentenced to 5 years' probation.

Cane sword, metal knuckles, tear gas found in home of San Mateo felon who pointed gun at ex-girlfriend: PD
(KRON) — A 55-year-old San Mateo felon is in custody for allegedly aiming a firearm at a former girlfriend then telling her that 'she was not free to leave his residence,' said the San Mateo Police Department. Suspected meth, fentanyl found in stolen vehicle: PD The incident happened at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, said SMPD. Police were able to get both a gun violence restraining order and search warrant later that same day for the suspect's home. At 10:11 p.m., police said a vehicle belonging to the suspect, identified as Daniel Lee Erickson, was stopped by a SMPD officer in the area of North San Mateo Drive and Bellevue Avenue where he was then arrested. 'The search warrant was then executed at Erickson's residence, and officers located several black powder cap and ball firearms, one of which was loaded, weapon accessories including those to melt metal, and a mold for pressing ball ammunition,' said San Mateo PD. 'Pepper spray, a pepper spray gun, brass/metal knuckles, and a cane sword were also located.' Erickson was booked into the San Mateo County Jail where he faces several charges, including assault with a firearm on a person, criminal threats, possession of metal knuckles, possession of a cane sword, and unlawful possession of a tear gas weapon. Caught on camera: Man hit by driver at Southside car meet
Video circulating on social media shows the moment a man was hit by a driver at a car meet in a Southside parking lot. Witnesses said that it was supposed to be just a 'park and chill' type of meet. In dash camera video provided to Action News Jax, you can see the car speed across the parking lot before hitting the victim. People then started running over to see if he was okay. 'This car came up and he started doing donuts,' said Brandon Ferrill, who is part of the local car community. 'And first of all, that's dangerous in any parking lot, but this was a crowded parking lot.' 'He showed up to what was otherwise a pretty civilized event. It was just people hanging out here, chilling with their cars and they were here to talk. No one was driving around or anything,' said Ferrill. Another video shows a different angle of the collision. It appears the car swerved before hitting the man, and then took off. Action News Jax spoke with the man who was injured in the video, who said he had been released from the hospital. He said he had a head injury, but is now recovering. We asked JSO if they are investigating the incident, and a spokesperson said they were not aware of the incident or the video. We also requested reports Friday afternoon to see if police responded to the area the night this happened. We are waiting to hear back. As a member of the local car community, Ferrill said they don't stand for any kind of reckless behavior at their meets.
