Pay rise coming for half a million Aussies after 'landmark' ruling: 'Up to 35 per cent'
More than half a million Australians working in female-dominated industries are in line for pay rises following a 'landmark' ruling by the Fair Work Commission. Pay rises of up to 35 per cent have been recommended to try to fix gendered pay imbalances.
The Fair Work Commission found workers covered by five awards, including childcare workers, health professionals, dental assistants and pathology collectors, had been the subject of 'gender-based undervaluation' and should receive pay rises.
The 'game-changing' ruling would see pharmacists receive a 14.1 per cent pay rise over the next three years, starting from June 30, 2025.
Workers covered by the remaining four awards would have their exact pay rises determined at a later date.

However, the Commission has proposed phased pay rises of up to 35 per cent for some health professionals, 27.8 per cent for early childhood workers, and up to 10.9 per cent for pathology collectors.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) said the changes would directly increase the wages of 175,000 workers paid under the awards and indirectly help 335,000 whose wages were underpinned by the awards.
'Unions welcome [the] landmark ruling by the Fair Work Commission, which recognises that working Australians should not be undervalued and underpaid because of their gender,' ACTU President Michele O'Neil said.
'For too long, jobs where the majority of workers are women have been paid less.
'Discounting women's work has contributed to the gender pay gap and worsened cost-of-living pressures for households.'
While it's a win for workers, business groups have said it would present difficulties for employers.
Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox said the decision would have a 'profound impact on employers' and many would struggle to meet the increased costs.
"If the provisional views are maintained, there will be a dramatic increase in costs for affected employers, many of which are small not-for-profit organisations in mostly government-funded sectors that lack any capacity to meet additional costs,' he said.
The Fair Work Commission noted there was the possibility parents could face higher childcare costs if the government doesn't commit to funding further pay increases.
The government has committed to delivering a 15 per cent increase for early childhood education and care workers, with $3.6 billion in funding set aside.
The decision followed amendments made to the Fair Work Act by the Albanese government in late 2022, known as the Secure Jobs, Better Pay Act.
The laws added gender equality as an objective of the Fair Work Act and allowed the Commission to order wage increases for workers for jobs that had been undervalued on the basis of gender.Sign in to access your portfolio

NZ watchdog mulls tightening grocery rules to create fairer playing field
New Zealand's competition regulator is proposing measures to create a fairer playing field between emerging grocery producers and the major supermarkets. In a two-pronged initiative, the Commerce Commission is also concerned that smaller grocery retailers face a disadvantage over their more dominant counterparts when it comes to securing competitive prices from large suppliers. The Commission presented its findings today (5 June) following a review of the Grocery Supply Code and is reaching out for feedback before it publishes its final report in September. "If the Commission doesn't see meaningful progress in 12 months, it will decide if regulations should be changed," the regulator said in a statement. Grocery Commissioner Pierre van Heerden explained: "We know the current grocery market is not serving Kiwi consumers well. The status quo lets a few major players set the rules for the rest of the industry which is negatively impacting consumers, new and expanding competitors, and small suppliers." He added: "These major players are the three main supermarkets and large national and multi-national suppliers. Their significant market share allows them to influence the settings of the market. This limits the ability for competing retailers to enter and grow in the market and often results in smaller suppliers getting an unfair deal." The draft recommendations to the Supply Code include curbing the circumstances in which supermarkets can bill suppliers for routine retail tasks, such as shelf stocking and display arrangement. Van Heerden highlighted the issue of a power disparity, saying that a "power imbalance between the major supermarkets and small suppliers creates a reluctance among suppliers to push back on supermarket demands or behaviour for fear of damaging relationships or losing access to supermarket shelves". New Zealand's grocery market is dominated by Foodstuffs and Woolworths. "The major supermarkets are the largest customers for most grocery suppliers," van Heerden said, controlling 82% of the market. The proposed modifications by the Commission would mandate supermarkets to keep records on how they are complying with the Code when undertaking "certain activities", including "negotiating promotions with suppliers and making deductions to payments without written consent". Looking into the wholesale supply of groceries, the Commission pointed out that promotional payments and rebates are generally inaccessible to newer or smaller retailers. 'A significant issue new and expanding supermarket competitors face is securing access to cost-effective groceries from large suppliers," Van Heerden said. "Competing retailers can't negotiate similar levels of support due to their weaker buying power." He also noted that the prevalent high-low pricing strategy used by New Zealand's major supermarkets is more extreme than in other countries, and a reduction in promotional dependence would result in more consistent and lower prices for consumers. 'The best option is for large suppliers and the major supermarkets to voluntarily change their behaviour. If they don't, we'll have to consider our other alternatives,' van Heerden said. ASX slides before key economic events
Australia's sharemarket sea-sawed throughout Thursday's trading as the Commonwealth Bank continued its record march higher. The benchmark ASX 200 index basically traded flat, losing just 2.90 points or 0.03 per cent to 8,538.90. The broader All Ordinaries also finished marginally in the red down 1.60 points or 0.02 per cent to 8,768.90. The Aussie dollar temporarily jumped above 65 US cents, but slid throughout the day's trading and is now buying 64.99 US cents. Even with the minor falls, the market remains within 20 points of an all-time record close. On a relatively quiet day of trading seven of the 11 sectors were lower, with information technology, A-REITs, Materials and Telecommunications lifting the ASX. CBA continued its record run after a late surge saw Australia's largest bank add 0.13 per cent to $181.34. Westpac also gained 0.48 per cent to $33.26, while NAB shares slid 0.23 per cent to $38.51 and ANZ was basically flat losing 0.034 per cent to $29.63. Meanwhile healthcare heavyweight CSL fell 1.32 per cent to $242.96, while Prop Medicus fell 0.89 per cent to $280.82 and Telix Pharmaceuticals dropped 2.83 per cent to $26.43. Utilities shares also slumped. Origin Energy fell 1.31 per cent to $10.58, while AGL slipped 0.57 per cent to $10.39 and Meridian Energy dropped 2.09 per cent to $5.16. Thursday's trading came ahead of a number of key international events led by US President Donald Trump's much hyped call with China's leader Xi Jinping, a European Central Bank meeting and American non-farm payroll data. senior financial market analyst Kyle Rodda said the markets may hit a lull heading into the non-farm payrolls release, with the upcoming ECB decision also a potentially market moving event. 'The ECB is all but certain to cut rates. However, there's uncertainty about the guidance the central bank will deliver given the murky outlook for US trade policy and global growth,' he said. One of the bright spots was lithium stocks led by the resources sector on the back of the White House announced they are creating new grants to help Albemarle fund a new lithium processing facility. Mineral Resources surged 15.14 per cent to $23.26, Pilbara Minerals also soared 12.08 per cent to $1.34 and Liontown Resources jumped 5.25 per cent to $0.64. In company news, Toys R Us has announced it was going into voluntary administration. Toys R Us shares have immediately suspended from trading on the ASX pending further announcements. Shares in Tyro slumped 10.38 per cent to $0.82 with investors selling down the payments business on the back of chief executive and managing director Jon Davey announcing he was moving to a new role with a private equity business. Resimac shares also fell sharply on Thursday, although investors won't mind as the company is going to pay a fully franked special dividend of 12 cents per share.
