Thatta's road link to Karachi, other towns cut off

Protest demonstrations erupted in Thatta on Wednesday as nationalist groups and local residents took to the streets against the construction of new canals off the Indus River.
In solidarity with the ongoing sit-in at Baberlo Bypass, demonstrators staged a major protest at the Makli Bypass, blocking the national highway connecting Thatta to Karachi, Sujawal, Badin, Umerkot, Mithi, and Tando Muhammad Khan, causing severe traffic disruptions.
The protest was led by Sindh United Party's district president Imran Khushk, Jeay Sindh Tehreek's Rawal Karnai, JSSF's Abdul Malik Khushk, QAT's Yasir Jakro, Jeay Sindh Mahaz's Amjad Shoro, and civil society representatives including Fawad Mashori and Haider Shah. The protesters chanted slogans like "Canal Project Rejected" and "No Theft of Indus Water." Leaders termed the canal projects a conspiracy to turn Sindh barren and claimed they pose a serious threat to the province's fertility, ecology, and millions of human and animal lives. They demanded the federal government immediately scrap the projects and warned the movement would continue until the plans were cancelled.
Sakrand
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sindh Women Wing President Anisa Waliullah Siddiqui, announced full support for the resistance movement against the canal schemes. Speaking to media in Sakrand, she said the protest has grown into a mass movement representing millions of Sindhis.
She emphasized that under the guise of the Green Pakistan Initiative and corporate farming, massive water diversion projects are being pushed to benefit Punjab's arid lands at Sindh's expense. Siddiqui declared these developments a direct threat to Sindh's agriculture, environment, and livelihoods, adding that they amount to economic, ecological, and demographic aggression. She called the six-canal project an environmental catastrophe and accused it of further destroying the Indus River, already impacted by past projects like Ghazi Barotha. She called for joint resistance by oppressed communities across Pakistan.
Nawabshah
Workers from Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) and other Sindhi nationalist parties staged a sit-in protest on the railway track between Nawabshah and Sakrand against the construction of canals on the Indus River. The railway traffic was suspended on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Pak Business Express train was stopped at Sarhari Railway Station due to the protest. The protesters, however, allowed the Karachi-bound Hazara Express bound to pass. However, later in the day the protestors left the railway tracks. Sakrand police station SHO Asghar Awan reached the scene with a heavy police contingent and held negotiations with the protesters.
Hyderabad
The Hyderabad Union of Journalists (HUJ) has announced a protest camp outside the Hyderabad Press Club today (Thursday) at 11am, opposing the canal projects. The event will see participation from political, religious, and nationalist parties, alongside traders, professionals, students, and civil society groups. HUJ President Hamid Shaikh confirmed all arrangements are in place. Separately, HUJ and PFUJ leaders expressed sorrow over the passing of senior journalist S.M. Shakeel and offered prayers and condolences to his family.

UK confirms sanctions against Israel's Ben-Gvir and Smotrich

LONDON: Britain confirmed on Tuesday that it had sanctioned two far-right Israeli ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, in response to what it called their incitement of violence against Palestinian communities. Israel orders military to stop Gaza-bound yacht carrying Greta Thunberg 'Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights. These actions are not acceptable. This is why we have taken action now – to hold those responsible to account,' British foreign minister David Lammy said in a statement.

Conor McGregor deletes post after Game of Thrones actor references Khabib loss

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor found himself on the receiving end of a brutal social media takedown this week from Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham, forcing the fighter to delete his controversial post. The exchange began when Cunningham - best known for playing Davos Seaworth in the HBO series - shared a post about Israel's seizure of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla. McGregor, who has increasingly involved himself in political discussions, responded with a mocking comment: "I thought you were on the boat Liamo, what happened? You forgot your sea goggles? You get sea sick off the gargle? Bottler." Cunningham delivered a cutting response that quickly went viral: "Didn't know you could read and write Conor. Thought you used your hands to tap out" - a clear reference to McGregor's infamous 2018 submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. The Irish fighter, who hasn't competed since July 2021, promptly deleted his original post, continuing his pattern of removing controversial social media content after backlash. McGregor has recently expressed interest in running for Irish presidency, though this latest exchange highlights the potential pitfalls of his combative online persona. The actor's retort struck particularly hard as it recalled one of the lowest moments in McGregor's fighting career. His submission to Nurmagomedov's neck crank remains one of his most high-profile defeats, followed by two knockout losses to Dustin Poirier in their subsequent trilogy fights. Cunningham, meanwhile, has established himself as a vocal humanitarian activist, with his Gaza-related posts reflecting his ongoing advocacy work. The sharp contrast between their public personas - the brash MMA star versus the politically engaged actor - made the exchange particularly noteworthy. This incident marks yet another example of McGregor's controversial social media presence, where his provocative posts often generate significant attention before being deleted. His online activity continues to draw scrutiny even as his fighting career remains on hiatus.

Israel seizes aid boat bound for Gaza

A picture shows the aid sailboat Madleen at the southern port of Ashdod after being intercepted by Israeli forces. Photo: AFP A Gaza-bound aid boat reached Israel's Ashdod port on Monday after being intercepted by Israeli forces, preventing the dozen activists on board including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg from reaching the blockaded Palestinian territory. An AFP photographer said that the Madleen, which organisers said was intercepted in international waters overnight, reached the port north of Gaza at around 8:45 pm (1745 GMT), escorted by the Israeli navy. The Madleen set sail from Italy on June 1 to raise awareness of food shortages in the Gaza Strip, which the United Nations has called the "hungriest place on Earth". After more than 20 months of war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the UN has warned that Gaza's entire population is at risk of famine. At around 4:02 am (0102 GMT) on Monday, Israeli troops "forcibly intercepted" the vessel as it approached Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said. "If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped," Thunberg said in pre-recorded footage shared by the coalition. Video from the group shows the activists with their hands up as Israeli forces boarded the vessel, with one of them saying nobody was injured prior to the interception. Israel's foreign ministry, in a post on social media, said "all the passengers of the 'selfie yacht' are safe and unharmed", adding it expected the activists to return to their home countries. Turkey condemned the interception as a "heinous attack" and Iran denounced it as "a form of piracy" in international waters. The Madleen was intercepted about 185 kilometres (115 miles) west of the coast of Gaza, according to coordinates from the coalition. President Emmanuel Macron requested that the six French nationals aboard the boat "be allowed to return to France as soon as possible", a presidential official said. Two of them are journalists, Omar Fayyad of Qatar-based Al Jazeera and Yanis Mhamdi who works for online publication Blast, according to media rights group Reporters Without Borders, which condemned their detention and called for their "immediate release". Al Jazeera "categorically denounces the Israeli incursion", the network said in a statement, demanding the reporter's release. Adalah, an Israeli NGO offering legal support for the country's Arab minority, said the activists on board the Madleen had requested its services, and that the group was likely to be taken to a detention centre before being deported. In what organisers called a "symbolic act", hundreds of people launched a land convoy on Monday from Tunisia with the aim of reaching Gaza.
