Williams team fined 50,000 euros for not recording onboard video

Washington Post22-03-2025

SHANGHAI — Williams has been fined 50,000 euros ($54,000) by the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix stewards on Saturday due to a communication error.
The penalty relates to the Williams team's failure to capture onboard video during Friday's practice as it believed the cameras would come pre-loaded with memory SD cards.
The majority of the fine — 40,000 euros ($43,000) — was suspended.
The FIA fitted all the cars with wireless forward and rearward facing cameras in China, with the governing body cracking down on rear wing flexing following the season-opener in Australia with a tougher static load test.
Williams was meant to provide video files from the new camera within an hour of practice finishing, but no data was captured due to the empty SD slots.
'They (Williams) noticed during the middle of the session that there was a red flashing light in the cameras and reported that to the Technical Delegate,' the stewards statement said. 'However, they did not know what the flashing light meant and, in any event, it was too late to fit the SD card(s) by then.'
'There was no suggestion that the wings were not in compliance with the bodywork flexibility requirements under the Technical Regulations'.
Williams said its internal procedures will be addressed and that all future recordings will be provided without issue.
'We understand that to ensure fair policing of technical regulations the FIA issued the resulting fine and we thank them for the constructive conversations and measured handling of this matter,' said a statement from Williams.

Devin Williams is Matt Blake's biggest Yankees pitching puzzle to date

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free For years, the Yankees and pitching coach Matt Blake have gained a reputation for taking relievers that have been mediocre — or worse — with other organizations and turning those afterthoughts into useful — or better — bullpen pieces in The Bronx. There was Clay Holmes, who went from wallowing with Pittsburgh to Yankees closer, and other lesser-known arms like lefties Wandy Peralta and Lucas Luetge, as well as right-hander Ian Hamilton. Even Fernando Cruz, whose stuff has always been recognized, is having more success with the Yankees than he did in his years in Cincinnati following his arrival in the trade that sent Jose Trevino to the Reds this past offseason. All of them came to the Yankees with unimpressive résumés and quickly became better with the Yankees. 4 Devin Williams throws a pitch during the Yankees' win against the Red Sox on June 6. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post So why, with as good a track record as any in the majors over the past several seasons, has it gone so poorly for Devin Williams? And how have Blake and Co. gone about trying to fix it? 'It was shocking to everybody,' Blake said of Williams' early season struggles, when he was battered around for 10 earned runs, a dozen hits and seven walks in just eight innings in his first 10 appearances. 'Everybody was trying to figure out what was going on here and what are we missing?' Blake said. 'He's not getting the swing-and-miss and the strikes we were hoping for. We had all those questions and had to get it fixed on the fly.' Williams is back in the closer role — at least temporarily, with Luke Weaver on the IL with a hamstring strain — but the former Brewer is beginning to resemble the pitcher he was in Milwaukee. After putting up a whiff rate of just 26.8 percent on his changeup and 25.6 percent with his four-seamer in March and April, Williams was at 39.6 percent with his change and 47.1 percent with his four-seamer in May. Those numbers are more in line with those he had with the Brewers last season, with a 48.8 percent on the changeup and 32.7 percent with the fastball. 4 Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake is pictured during spring training. Charles Wenzelberg CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS 'I think he's gotten comfortable in the environment,'' Blake said. 'He had the challenge of not pitching well and having it magnified in New York.' On the pitching side, Blake said Williams was 'maybe a little too overreliant on the changeup early on and his fastball command wasn't great, which limited what he was doing.' 4 Aaron Boone removes Devin Williams from the Yankees' April 25 game. Jason Szenes for the NY Post Since then, Blake said Williams has been both 'more unpredictable and more aggressive in the zone to control counts better so can get that expansion and chase in counts he wants.' The results, while not vintage Williams, have improved. His strikeout rate since May 7 has jumped from 11.4 per nine innings to 12.8 and his walks have dropped from 4.5 per nine innings to 1.5. And in his past 13 appearances, he's walked two and struck out 17 and his WHIP is 0.830. 'The best thing we did was being able to pull him out of the [closer] role without sacrificing our relationship with him and say, 'We fully believe you will have success in this role, but let's take a break and find some different spots to get you in to get you rolling,' ' Blake said. 'That freed us up to get him back on track and hopefully we can build on that.' Williams still hasn't gotten all the way back, and questions about whether he will be the closer the Yankees sought when they traded Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin for him persist. 4 Austin Wells (l.) and Devin Williams (r.) embrace after the Yankees defeated the Red Sox on June 6. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post But Blake is more confident now. 'He's in a good place and the rhythm of his attack plan to batters has gotten stronger,'' Blake said. 'He feels good about his process and we feel good about putting him in those spots again. He's gonna have some hiccups along the way, but there's much more stability to get through those now.'

‘Absolutely incredible': Early buzz for Brad Pitt's F1 movie suggests a massive hit incoming

The checkered flag isn't even waving yet, but Apple's upcoming F1 movie starring Brad Pitt is already leaving critics breathless — and if the early reactions are any indication, Apple might actually have the first of the summer's blockbusters when it hits theaters later this month. The high-octane Formula 1 movie from Apple Original Films is anchored by Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a fictional legend of the sport who was once considered 'the greatest that never was.' A golden boy of the 1990s, Sonny's meteoric career was derailed by a devastating crash. Now, decades later, he's lured out of semi-obscurity by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who runs a failing F1 team desperate for a miracle. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 Sonny's comeback hinges on teaming up with rookie phenom Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). While both men strive for glory, however, their partnership turns competitive, with the film exploring not only spectacle and speed, but pride — plus the cost of redemption. Early screenings have already sparked a wave of social media and critical enthusiasm. Variety's Jazz Tangcay summed it up with a two-word verdict: 'Absolutely Obsessedddddd.' Fellow Variety writer Clayton Davis declared it a 'summer hit incoming,' while Drew Taylor of TheWrap called F1 'absolutely incredible,' adding, 'It's one of the coolest, most entertaining movies you'll probably ever see.' In other words, the same company behind streaming hits like Ted Lasso and Slow Horses might've just hit the gas on this year's ultimate summer crowd-pleaser. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), combines practical racing footage with immersive cinematography, much of it captured in partnership with real-world F1 teams. Long story short, there's every indication that this adrenaline-soaked sports drama is not just for racing fans, but rather for anyone craving the kind of big-screen entertainment that defines great summer movies. As Mike Ryan of IndieWire put it: 'Good gosh, that was a lot of fun.' And that's good news, because Apple's film division could certainly use a breakout win right now. While the tech giant made history with CODA, becoming the first streamer to win Best Picture at the Oscars, it hasn't had another film strike the same chord since. Its most recent big-budget release, Fountain of Youth, landed with quite a thud. The studio certainly has ambitious goals and deep pockets, but it's still searching for a consistent formula for movie success. If F1 can live up to the early hype, it might finally give Apple the mainstream hit it's been chasing — one that appeals to both popcorn moviegoers and prestige film lovers alike. Seth Rollins on why Caleb Williams will have better Year 2 than Jayden Daniels

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be compared for the duration of their NFL careers. The first and second overall picks, respectively, have all of the talent and potential to thrive and be the face of the league for the long term. But while Daniels had an easy-going rookie season -- en route to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors -- Williams dealt with adversity and still faces plenty of criticism after just one year. Advertisement During a recent appearance on the "Up & Adams" show, WWE superstar (and noted Bears fan) Seth Rollins explained why he believes Williams will have a better 2025 season than Daniels. "I think Caleb Williams is going to have a better year," Rollins said. "I think last year was an aberration. I think you're going to see a little bit of a sophomore slump. I think people are going to be able to gameplan for (Jayden) better. ... I just think the second year is going to be more difficult. You look at C.J. had a great year, but compared to the rookie year, not quite as good. I think you're going to look at it and see a situation like that whereas expectations are going to be a little bit lower for Caleb, and I think he's going to be able to exceed those. Plus, he's playing in a system with Ben Johnson that's going to be curated better to him than what he was doing with Shane Waldron." While it's easy to deem Rollins a "superfan" defending "his" quarterback, he brings up a good point. A sophomore slump could potentially be in play for Daniels, who had a lights-out rookie season. Also, we haven't even glimpsed Williams' ceiling after his chaotic rookie season that featured incompetent coaching. Now with Ben Johnson in place, we should get a taste of what Williams can really bring to the field. There's no reason Williams and Daniels can't both be great -- and we could very well be witnessing the beginning of that -- but people love to compare and declare who's better. That's a question that wouldn't even be answered for several years. But with both Williams and Daniels in the NFC, they'll be seeing a lot of each other throughout their careers -- especially if their respective teams become perennial playoff teams. Advertisement Williams and Daniels will square off again for the second time in as many seasons when the Commanders host the Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 6. While Williams nearly won the first match -- before Tyrique Stevenson's blunder on a Hail Mary -- he'll have a chance to redeem himself and even the series with Daniels on Oct. 13.
