‘Daisy Has Driven Everyone Crazy': Karnataka HC Quashes Case Against Man Accused Of Stealing Cat
Last Updated:
As the case came up for hearing, Justice M Nagaprasanna remarked: "Cat named Daisy has driven everyone crazy"
The Karnataka High Court (HC) on Tuesday quashed a criminal case filed against a man accused of his neighbour's cat named 'Daisy'.
As the case came up for hearing, Justice M Nagaprasanna remarked: 'Cat named Daisy has driven everyone crazy".
The accused, Taha Husain, was booked for stealing his neighbour's cat in 2023. Husain had moved the high court seeking to quash the case. The case came up for hearing July 23, 2024. Justice Nagaprasanna had then put a halt to all legal proceedings against Husain, granting him interim relief.
The court had then held: 'Permitting further proceedings in such frivolous cases will clog the criminal justice system."
In July 2024, following the First Information Report (FIR), the police had also submitted a chargesheet against Husain, who was booked under the charges of criminal intimidation, breach of peace, and insulting the modesty of woman under Sections 504, 506 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code.
Police had claimed that CCTV footage from the area was reviewed and the cat was seen inside Husain's house at a specific time.
Husain's counsel had then argued that cats tend to enter and exit other houses through windows and this cannot constitute a criminal offence.

12 men accused of murder during 2020 riots acquitted
New Delhi: A court acquitted 12 people accused of killing a youth during the 2020 riots in northeast Delhi, citing a lack of evidence and contradictions in the statements of witnesses. The court of additional sessions judge Pulastya Pramachala said on June 5 that the investigating agency failed to prove the charges of murder, rioting, criminal conspiracy to murder and destruction of evidence against the accused. According to the prosecution, 12 men who were part of a rioting mob on Feb 25, 2020, killed Aas Mohammad and threw him in the drain at Bhagirathi Vihar/Johripur pulia. He was coming on foot from the Loni border side in Ghaziabad. The chargesheet was filed on the charges of murder along with rioting, arson, criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between different religious groups and statements conducing to public mischief under Indian Penal Code. The prosecution also alleged that as per the chats of a WhatsApp group, the accused and their associates conspired to teach Muslims a lesson for attacking the Hindus. They equipped themselves with lathis, dandas, sticks, etc., by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? The court gave the benefit of doubt to all accused. "In the absence of some concrete evidence laying down the foundation, no presumption can be raised that some persons identified as part of some mob at some place at some other time period would also have been part of a mob, and such mob was involved in the incident of murder of Aas Mohammad," the judge noted in the 62-page judgment. The acquitted people are Lokesh Kumar Solanki, Pankaj Sharma, Sumit Chaudhary, Ankit Chaudhary, Prince, Rishabh Chaudhary, Jatin Sharma, Vivek Panchal, Himanshu Thakur, Tinku Arora, Sandeep Thakur and Sahil alias Babu. However, the court convicted Solanki of promoting enmity, doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and statements conducing to public mischief for inciting communal violence during the riots. "Accused Lokesh was a member of this group since the beginning. Some of the messages posted by him in this group are already reproduced in this judgment. I have gone through the messages posted in this group by different members. As the name suggests, the central focus of messages in this group has been to unite the persons from the Hindu community. However, on that pretext, messages started pouring in to the effect of abusing the Muslims. Messages were posted to call upon the members to assemble together, so as to counter the Muslims," the judge said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . HC upholds 12-yr jail term for man convicted of raping elderly woman
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has upheld the 12-year jail sentence of a man convicted of raping a 60-year-old woman, finding her testimony "cogent, consistent, and free from material embellishments." Justice Sanjeev Narula, in a recent order, observed that the survivor's account remained "unshaken under the rigour of cross-examination" and suffered from no material infirmity that would warrant rejection. "Her testimony inspires confidence and stands as a credible and trustworthy narrative of the incident," the court said. Rejecting the convict's plea for a reduced sentence, the HC noted that the crime was committed under grave circumstances—against a vulnerable survivor, and while the accused—24-year-old man at the time of crime—was in an inebriated state. "The sentence awarded by the trial court is neither excessive nor disproportionate. Rather, it is commensurate with the seriousness of the crime and the circumstances under which it was perpetrated," the court ruled. According to the prosecution, the incident took place in June 2017 when the accused forcibly entered the survivor's shanty during the early hours, gagged her, and committed the assault. Although the accused denied the charges and claimed inconsistencies in the survivor's version, the court held that her testimony alone was sufficient to sustain the conviction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Referring to established jurisprudence, the court reiterated that in cases of sexual assault, a survivor's sole testimony can be the basis for conviction if found to be credible and of "sterling quality". In this case, the court said, the woman's version not only withstood judicial scrutiny but was also corroborated by medical evidence, expert testimony, and statements by the investigating officer. The consistent jurisprudence of the Supreme Court has underscored that in prosecutions relating to sexual offences, the solitary statement of the survivor, if it inspires the confidence of the court, requires no further corroboration, it added. Crucially, DNA analysis conducted in the case confirmed the allegations and directly linked the accused to the crime, further strengthening the prosecution's narrative. "The evidence presented was reliable, admissible, and consistent with the survivor's version," the court said, finding no ground to interfere with the trial court's "well-reasoned findings." Addressing the argument that no independent witnesses were produced, the court clarified, "The law does not mandate public witnesses in every case, particularly when the act occurs in an enclosed area and at a time when most people would be asleep." Court acquits Revanth in 2023 case over rude remarks against police
Hyderabad: Twenty months after the Begum Bazar police station filed a criminal case against chief minister A Revanth Reddy for allegedly making objectionable statements against the police, a local sessions judge at the Nampally court acquitted him on Thursday. Reddy did not appear in court at the time of the hearing, however. "The accused was found not guilty of offences punishable under sections 294B (singing, reciting or uttering obscene songs, ballads or words in or near a public place), 189 (threatening injury to a public servant) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was therefore acquitted under section 248(1) of the CrPC," said the Special Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) for Excise Cases. The case was initially filed by Nirmal police following a complaint by Meer Virasat Ali, an armed reserve constable. The complaint alleged that, during a press conference held at Gandhi Bhavan, Revanth Reddy had made objectionable statements about the Mahabubnagar police and used offensive language against the state police. At the time, Revanth Reddy was the Telangana Pradesh Congress President.
