He stressed that NCDs like diabetes, hypertension, and various forms of cancer have become serious health threats and cannot be left to the private sector alone, which tends to prioritise treatment over prevention. 'It is the government's responsibility to prevent these diseases before they reach critical stages. No one else will do it,' Rao said.
The minister said that to support the state-wide implementation, a detailed manual has also been released for ASHA workers and health officers. 'ASHA workers will go house-to-house to spread awareness about NCDs and refer residents to nearby Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, where community health officers will conduct the actual screening.
The officers will enter the screening data into the NCD portal and ensure patients diagnosed with conditions like diabetes and hypertension receive free medication immediately. In more serious cases, they will refer individuals to higher-level hospitals for further treatment,' Rao explained.
The ultimate goal of this scheme is to reduce the burden of chronic diseases by identifying them early, Rao said.

Awareness campaign on TB elimination held in Veldurthi
Veldurthi (Kurnool district): As part of a special initiative to eliminate tuberculosis (TB), a 100-day campaign is currently being implemented across the country. Dr Raghu, Officer-in-Charge of Mobile Medical Unit, participated as the chief guest in an awareness programme held at Ayushman Arogya Mandir under Ramallakota Primary Health Centre limits on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raghu emphasised the need to eradicate TB through collective efforts, just as India had successfully eradicated polio. He stated that a comprehensive awareness drive under TB Mukt Abhiyan is being conducted to dispel misconceptions about the disease and to sensitise the public about early diagnosis and treatment. Under the theme 'Yes, we can end TB', the Government of India has launched an intensified 100-day campaign focused on Tracing, Testing, and Treatment. The aim is to make India TB-free by identifying and treating all TB cases, especially the 'missing' or undiagnosed cases. Dr Raghu pointed out that people with poor nutrition, HIV infection, diabetes, substance abuse (alcohol and tobacco), chronic illnesses, or those living in unhygienic conditions—such as slum dwellers, beggars, and migrant populations—are more vulnerable to TB due to weakened immunity. He stressed the importance of early detection and timely treatment, noting that prolonged cough (more than two weeks), evening fevers, night sweats, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, fatigue, and general weakness are key symptoms of TB. He urged ASHA workers to identify such individuals as presumptive TB patients and refer them for diagnostic tests such as sputum examination and chest X-ray at nearby health centers. As part of the 100-day action plan, frontline health workers and ASHA activists will conduct extensive outreach programs to raise awareness about TB prevention and control in the community. Dr Bhuvana Teja, Health Supervisors Mohan, Community Health Officers Haseena and Mounika, TB Supervisor Mahesh, health staff, ASHA workers, projectionist Khaleel and others were present.

Mangaluru: Today's youth can change things because of their new ideas, thoughts, and new ways of doing things, said district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Rao was addressing 750 youths from nearly 10 countries, who are part of the three-day 'Global Youth Summit 2025', an international conference that started on Wednesday. The first-of-its-kind conference is hosted by the State NSS Cell, department of youth empowerment and sports, govt of Karnataka, in collaboration with Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). He said that the conference is focusing on the issues concerning the youth, the challenges that the youth are facing today, and the issues that they are confronting. "There are so many things happening around the world. Whether it is in Africa, Asia, Europe, or America, every country has controversial issues as well as many interesting developments. For the youth today, there are definitely a lot of opportunities for them to learn and grow," he noted. The minister asked youths to think and take action on how they can cut across barriers to bring in solidarity. "All must come together, and it is about solidarity. It is how we can bring people together, how we can think in a way that benefits not only ourselves but also the world," he said. He asked the youth to focus on and raise discussions about environmental civil rights, transgender rights, women's empowerment, human rights, and women's rights. "In many countries, political movements and democracies are in danger, with authoritarian regimes taking over," he said. During his address, the minister also highlighted growing health concerns among youth, linking lifestyle choices in a digitised world to rising instances of diabetes, blood pressure, mental stress, and other ailments. "Health issues among youngsters are concerning. It is due to lifestyle, and we see the onset of so many diseases. Concentration levels are going down, and there are poor communication skills. Youth are suffering from mental stress. All need to take care of their mental and physical health," he told the participants.
