Confirmed Team News and Predicted Chelsea XI Ahead of Brentford Derby
Chelsea XI Predicted as West London Derby Looms
The turnaround is tight, the decisions significant. Chelsea's narrow but gritty 1-0 win over Tottenham on Thursday has lifted spirits and expectations. But fewer than 72 hours later, the west London derby away at Brentford now beckons, and Enzo Maresca must once again reshape a squad teetering on the edge of full fitness.
Managing Minutes After Tottenham
Enzo Fernandez's headed winner underlined Chelsea's recent grit, edging them back into the Premier League's top four with just eight games remaining. But victory came at a price. Maresca now finds himself balancing freshness with form.

Nicolas Jackson returned after a two-month absence with a hamstring injury and showed flashes of sharpness before fatigue took over. 'It remains to be seen whether he is risked again so soon' against Brentford, with rotation almost certain up front.
There was also a welcome cameo from Noni Madueke. Returning from his own hamstring issue, the winger is now 'pushing to make his first start since February's 3-0 defeat at Brighton.' His return places Jadon Sancho under pressure to retain his spot.

Defence Faces Tight Turnaround
In defence, Reece James was a surprise omission from the Spurs starting XI despite solid showings prior to and during the international break. With freshness key, he's expected to be restored to the line-up, potentially alongside Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill. Maresca has managed to keep Chelsea compact and tactically sound in recent weeks — but Brentford, always aggressive at home, will test that.

Tosin Adarabioyo could again anchor the defence with Colwill, as Wesley Fofana remains out. There's further concern with Romeo Lavia, who missed Thursday's match and won't return for this fixture either.
'[Fofana had] a muscle problem a few days ago and we are waiting for more checks,' said Maresca. '[Lavia] for Sunday is out. We don't know [about a timeline] yet. Romeo looks a little bit better injury compared to Wes, in terms of Romeo will probably be back more quickly than Wes.'

Mudryk also remains unavailable and was not involved against Spurs.
Chelsea XI Prediction for Brentford
With the congested schedule, Maresca's expected to shuffle several key roles while maintaining a structure that has proven resilient in recent matches. The midfield axis of Moises Caicedo and Fernandez remains untouched, with Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto providing support in attack.

Madueke looks set to be rewarded with a start, offering pace and directness from the right, while Jackson is likely to be risked again through the middle unless a late change is forced.
Predicted Chelsea XI:
Sanchez; James, Tosin, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson
Match Details and Broadcast Information
Injured: Fofana, Lavia
Unavailable: Mudryk
Date and Time: Sunday 6 April 2025, 2:00pm BST
Venue: Gtech Community Stadium, London
How to Watch: Not televised live in the UK
Chelsea enter this fixture on a run of improved form and with a top-four spot in their grasp. Brentford, battling for consistency, will relish the chance to disrupt the Blues' rhythm. For Maresca, the challenge is not just physical recovery, but psychological sharpness — and ensuring his Chelsea XI can meet the moment, again.

No transfer bids for Emi Martinez as Aston Villa star speaks out

Aston Villa haven't received any formal contact regarding goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who has dominated the transfer headlines since the end of the season. The 32-year-old's future has come under scrutiny after he was seen in tears at the end of Villa's final home game of the season against Tottenham last month. Advertisement Martinez signed a long-term contract extension in August but has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid, other European clubs, and teams in Saudi Arabia. READ MORE: Nassef Sawiris agreement as expletive fired off in 'stupid' Man Utd transfer rant READ MORE: Manager warns that Aston Villa transfer target 'is not ready for the Premier League' He joined up with the Argentina national team over the weekend and remained coy about his future when asked. 'My future? I don't know,' he told the press. 'I'm here to play for the national team, and that's all I care about right now. Do I want to change clubs? The transfer market has just opened, so there's still a lot to happen.' Advertisement As it stands, no club has submitted a formal offer for Martinez. Meanwhile, Villa are not under a huge amount of pressure to generate significant funds through player sales this summer, thanks to the financial boost from their Champions League campaign. Unai Emery's side earned around £100 million after reaching the quarter-finals, where they were narrowly beaten 5–4 on aggregate by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. However, after failing to qualify for next season's Champions League, they won't have such revenue to call on in the 2026 summer window. Danish heartbreak offered glimpse into NI future

International Friendly: Denmark v Northern Ireland Venue: Parken Stadium, Copenhagen Date: Saturday, 7 June Kick-off: 18:00 BST Coverage: Watch live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two NI, listen on BBC Sounds and follow live text commentary & in-play clips on the BBC Sport website Advertisement Northern Ireland's last visit to Copenhagen will always be best remembered for the almost five-minute VAR check that preceded the disallowing of Callum Marshall's injury-time equaliser. The debutant striker thought his instinctive flick only nine minutes into his international career had secured a creditable draw only for technology to intervene and eventually judge that Jonny Evans was marginally offside in the build-up. Michael O'Neill described the decision as "a joke" but, as he brings his side back to the Parken Stadium just shy of two years on for a friendly on Saturday evening, the manager can look back on the heart-breaking night as a key staging post of his second spell in charge. Coming in between dispiriting home defeats by Finland and Kazakhstan, the game may not have appeared to be any great turning point yet, in the time since, those who were then just dipping their toes into international waters have become the core of his side. Advertisement O'Neill was without 10 regulars when last in Copenhagen, travelling without the likes of Steven Davis, Stuart Dallas, Corry Evans, Josh Magennis and Conor Washington, while Craig Cathcart pulled out on the morning of the game. In their absence, O'Neill started three teenagers in an international XI for the first time in his career, with Liverpool's Conor Bradley joined by Isaac Price and Shea Charles, while another two, Marshall and Dale Taylor, came off the bench. Indeed, it was the first time since May 2011 that any Northern Ireland side had featured as many as three players yet to celebrate their 20th birthdays. Then it was Josh Carson, Johnny Gorman and Lee Hodson who all started together against Wales in the short-lived Nations Cup under manager Nigel Worthington. Advertisement While the latter won 24 caps and was a member of the squad that went to Euro 2016, that neither Carson nor Gorman hit double figures illustrates the vagaries of development when it comes to throwing young players in at the deep end. With that in mind, O'Neill can only be delighted with how his own teenage trio have progressed. Now all 21-years-old, Bradley is the team's talisman and was a part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League this season. Shea Charles was in his final weeks on the books at Manchester City at the time of the Denmark fixture and would soon join Southampton. On loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship this season, he impressed at Hillsborough and, like Bradley, has already captained the international side. Advertisement For a team who have struggled for a regular goalscorer since the days of David Healy and Kyle Lafferty, the final member of the triumvirate, Price, developing a knack for finding the back of the net has been key. Having left Everton for Standard Liege shortly after his first international start, the midfielder swapped Belgium for West Brom in January and already has eight goals in 20 caps. In Northern Ireland's history only Norman Whiteside - who scored his eighth international goal three weeks and six days after his 21st birthday - ever scored as many at such a young age. Throw in the fact that the June 2023 game also represented a first start for Trai Hume, another of O'Neill's captains who was integral to Sunderland's promotion to the Premiership this season, and the game can now be said to have represented a real glimpse into the side's future. Isaac Price has scored six goals in his past five internationals for Northern Ireland [Getty Images] Final preparations for World Cup qualification Back then, Northern Ireland were in the middle of a run of just three wins in 16 fixtures and O'Neill said after the game that he was "not thinking about [tournament] qualification" but instead simply "about putting points on the board". Advertisement Since, the goalposts have moved with three defeats in 13 games, a run that began with a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture with Denmark, raising hopes that O'Neill could lead a second squad to a major tournament. With this window, where Northern Ireland will also host Iceland in Belfast on 10 June, representing the final games before qualification for the 2026 World Cup begins in September, the return to Copenhagen offers an interesting yardstick to measure progress. With Bradley and Crystal Palace's Justin Devenny the only players in O'Neill's panel to have featured in the Premier League this season, their hosts on Saturday, ranked 21st in the Fifa world rankings, will contain a plethora of players drawn from Europe's top leagues. In Northern Ireland's last outing, an injury-hit panel struggled in a 5-1 defeat to Sweden when the top-flight quality of Newcastle United's Alexander Isak proved especially telling. Advertisement With Germany in their four-team group to make it to Canada, Mexico and the USA next summer, there is clearly a need for more regular exposure to higher level of opposition. Two years ago a callow side almost pulled off a shock draw. Saturday offers the opportunity to show how far along the path that same group have come since then.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's early departure from Liverpool to Real Madrid has been confirmed, with the club set to make around £10 million for releasing him early, and Jeremie Frimpong is set to come in immediately as his replacement for just £29.5 million. Advertisement It now appears a deal for Florian Wirtz, who is ranked at no.3 in FourFourTwo's list of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now, is on the brink of being completed, with a monster bid tabled. His 15 goals and 16 assists in all competitions helped Bayer Leverkusen to second placed Bundesliga finish, a Champions League quarter-final and a DFB Pokal semi-final, while he won Bundesliga Player of the Season for a second year in a row. Florian Wirtz on the ball against Michael Olise in the Bundesliga | Credit: Getty Images It now appears Liverpool are prepared to break their club record transfer in order to bring him to Anfield. Advertisement Reliable transfer journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that a bid worth €130 million (£109 million) has been submitted to Bayer Leverkusen from Liverpool to sign Wirtz. Sport BILD have suggested the breakdown would be a £100 million fixed fee, with around £10-12 million in bonuses. They suggest that the bonuses would include targets such as qualifying for and winning the Champions League. The report also suggests that a contract until 2030 has already been agreed between club and player, and that both clubs are closely aligned on the fee, so an agreement is 'a matter of time'. Liverpool manager Arne Slot with the Premier League trophy | Credit:It would represent a huge increase on the fee paid for Darwin Nunez in 2022, which was in the region of €85 million according to Transfermarkt, but would still be below what Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez, the most expensive Premier League signing ever, in 2023. FourFourTwo believes the move can only be a positive for Liverpool. It signals their intent to stay at the top of English football, and top class depth will help them as they look to achieve big on all fronts next season.
