Shubman Gill needs time to rise, captains are not made in 1-2 months: Harbhajan Singh
Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that Shubman Gill will need time to rise as a leader. Gill has been appointed as India's new Test captain following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. His first assignment as the skipper will be the tour of England set to begin from June 20.Ahead of the all-important tour, Harbhajan has praised Gill, saying that he has the capability to carry forward the legacy of the former captains. The former spinner also opined that the youngster can transfer his success as a batter into the captaincy and just needs some time to rise to the occasion.advertisement'Every captain has the capability to carry forward the legacy. Captains are not made in 1-2 months. You give some time to Gill, he will rise to the occasion, and you will see how capable he is as a captain. We have already seen him as a batter, that he is 'Gill Sahab the great',' Harbhajan was quoted as saying by ANI.
Furthermore, Habhajan wished good luck to the young Indian team to do wonders in England."We hope that India does well once again on English soil. Best wishes to Shubman Gill and Team India. It is a young team but a 'dum waali team'," the former spinner added.Gill has led India in five T20Is in 2024 on the tour of Zimbabwe, where the team emerged victorious by 4-1. He has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties to his name. The 25-year-old has a tough challenge ahead of him to lead the Indian side on the challenging tour of England. The young batting star doesn't have a memorable record away from India as he's scored just 88 runs from three Tests played in England with a highest score of 28. Hence, the new captain has a massive task to turn his fortunes in the upcoming tour and lead India to their first series win in England in 2007.

India look to bounce back against formidable Australia in FIH Pro League
Antwerp, Low on confidence after four successive defeats, a struggling India will be desperate to arrest the slide and stay in contention for the top prize when they take on a formidable Australia in the men's FIH Pro League on Saturday. The European leg of the tournament has been disappointing for the Indian men's hockey team, which suffered 1-2 and 2-3 losses to Olympic champions Netherlands in Amstelveen, followed by back-to-back defeats against Argentina. Ranked fifth with 15 points from 12 games, India need to bounce back strongly against Australia to collect crucial points and remain in the race for a top-three finish. "A win against Australia will be very critical for us, as it will not only help us gain crucial points but also give the team a winning momentum," said captain Harmanpreet Singh, who had missed the last match due to a finger injury, in a release. "We've had a few close games in the last four matches, and while we have been on the losing end, we want to change that and get some wins under our belts." While poor penalty-corner conversions and the recurring issue of conceding late goals cost them dearly against the Netherlands, it was sloppy defending that led to a 3-4 defeat to Argentina in the first game. In the second, a potential equaliser from a late penalty was disallowed as India went down 1-2. India also struggled to earn penalty corners, managing only three compared to Argentina's eight. Up against a strong Australian side, India can ill afford any more slip-ups and will have to play out of their skins to turn their fortunes around. Currently ranked world number 7, India will look to draw confidence from their win over former world number one Australia during the Paris Olympics Pool stage. India will conclude their European leg with two matches against Belgium on June 21 and 22.

Head Coach Gautam Gambhir is set to return to India due to a family emergency. [@RevSportzGlobal] – He is likely to re-join the team early next week. 🇮🇳 — Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) June 13, 2025 Meanwhile, India's bowling coach Morne Morkel revealed that consistency will be the key for the Indian bowlers if they hope to thrive in English conditions. 'I think consistency is crucial in England and there is consistency when we practice, there's consistency off the field, finding your process, what's going to work for you as an individual,' Morkel said on the sidelines of India's training session in Beckenham. 'We've got a great variation, variety in our attack, guys with different skill sets so they can do that and still execute the basics well,' he added. India last played Test match cricket in early January, during the Sydney Test against Australia. Several players in the current Indian squad, including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, will be featuring in their maiden Test series on English soil. 'All in all, happy with the start so far. I was a little bit nervous in terms of the lack of red ball we've played but seeing how the guys are moving around and training in the last three days is a pleasing sight. 'We have a fantastic group. There's some quality energy and that's what you need. You need to go into a Test series confident and have that team spirit,' the former South Africa pacer added. India will begin a four-day intra-squad warm-up game against India 'A' team members starting in Beckenham, on Friday.
