Azharuddin Says India 'Too Much Dependent On Bumrah.. Should Play Kuldeep Yadav'
Last Updated:
Mohammad Azharuddin cited India's reliance on Jasprit Bumrah for their loss to England and suggested including spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
After India's five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin cited the team's excessive reliance on pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah as a crucial factor in the loss.
Azharuddin emphasised the need for a more balanced bowling attack and recommended including spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test starting Wednesday at Edgbaston in Birmingham, where the dry surface could benefit the left-arm wrist spinner.
'They are too much dependent on Bumrah. It's not that easy because you need more experienced bowlers, and they should play Kuldeep Yadav," Azharuddin was quoted as saying by PTI Videos from Hyderabad.
Despite a strong start with a first-innings total of 471—thanks to centuries from Shubman Gill (147), Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), and Rishabh Pant (134)—India experienced a dramatic collapse, losing their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. This trend continued in the second innings as well.
'We lost because of batting collapse, but anyways now they have to pick the right players and bowling has to be perfect," Azhar noted.
Azharuddin also defended debutant Test captain Shubman Gill, who faced scrutiny after the loss regarding his bowling changes during the game.
'This is his just first match as a captain, you just can't talk about captaincy, it's too early to talk about captaincy," he remarked, urging fans to give Gill time to grow into the role.
'We should give him a fair chance and he has just taken over, so you should give him a lot of time and support also. We cannot just complain and criticise players like that," he concluded.
Jasprit Bumrah for the remainder of the Test series. Initially, it was decided that Bumrah would participate in only three of the five Tests in this ICC World Test Championship series to manage his back issue. According to Gambhir, India's narrow five-wicket loss to England in the series opener has not prompted any changes to this plan.
'For us, managing Bumrah's workload is crucial because there's a lot of cricket ahead and we know what he brings to the team," said Gambhir.
'Before this tour, it was agreed that he would play three Test matches, but we will monitor his condition. However, we haven't yet decided which other two Test matches he will play," he added.

Leather hunt, some redemption, wasted chances: A look at Indias winless Test journey in Birmingham
Edgbaston [UK], June 29 (ANI): Team India will play their second Test of the five-match tour of England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, where they have yet to secure a win. The match at Birmingham will kick off on Wednesday. Team India trails by 0-1 in the series, failing to defend 371 runs against a Ben Duckett-charged England during the first Test at Leeds. The left-hander poured a heavy dosage of reverse sweeps on Team India's plans, completing the Three Lions' second-best run chase in Tests. Indian fans and players alike would not like to see their record at Edgbaston, where they are yet to win a match. Seven out of eight matches have been lost, while one has ended in a draw. In their previous match at Edgbaston back in July 2022, the rescheduled fifth Test of the 2021 series, India, under stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, looked like a highly proud unit till the fourth innings. With centuries from Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) taking India to 416 from a shaky situation of 98/5 and pacers firing all cylinders, a defeat looked certain for England chasing 378 runs as they slipped to 109/3 despite a century partnership between openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley. However, centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root left India searching for answers, hunting for red cherry in every corner of the ground. The hosts pulled off their highest-ever run-chase in Tests and showed the Indians what the hype of their 'Bazball' school of cricket under skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum was all about. The series ended in a 2-2 draw. During the 2018 tour, the biggest story was that of a superstar making up for a major career slip-up in England during his initial years. Questioned about his ability against moving deliveries of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Indian skipper Virat Kohli defended, survived edges and half-chances and drove to perfection, scoring his first Test ton in England, a blistering 149, a major chunk of which was made along with the tail end. With a loud roar and a kiss to his wedding ring, the 'King Kohli' gave it back in style. However, despite his lone warrior batting effort and the sheer excellence of his bowlers, particularly Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, the team could not chase down 194, being bundled out for 162 despite Virat's second-innings fifty, which helped England take a 1-0 lead. During the 2011 horror tour, when India was far from their usual competitive selves, Alastair Cook's marathon 545-ball 294 outclassed, tired out, and depleted Indian bowling and batting morale. India conceded 710/7, the highest Test total at the venue and faced a crushing loss by an innings and 242 runs. India lost the series by this point. Sachin Tendulkar's classy 122 in 1996 during an eight-wicket loss and crushing losses by 132 runs in 1967 (during which India was skittled out for 92), innings & 78 runs in 1974 and innings & 83 runs in 1979 are some other memories fans will keep with themselves forever. The innings losses saw double tons coming from David Lloyd and David Gower (1974 and 1979, respectively), which rattled Indian bowlers.

‘Give Shubman Gill a fair chance… India are too much dependent on Jasprit Bumrah': Azharuddin tears into critics
Since India's defeat in the opening Test vs England in Leeds, new captain Shubman Gill has fallen victim to criticism from certain sections of fans and experts. India put in a dominant batting display, where Gill, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal got centuries, amd vice-captain Rishabh Pant smacked twin tons. Despite the centuries, fielding errors and a weak bowling attack saw England win the Test by five wickets. Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah in action during the first Test.(AFP/Reuters) Former India cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin rushed to Gill's defence, claiming that it was very early to talk about his captaincy and he still needs some time. 'This is his just first match as a captain, you just can't talk about captaincy. It's too early to talk about captaincy,' he said. 'We should give him a fair chance and he has just taken over. So, you should give him a lot of time and support. We cannot just complain and criticise players like that.' 'Too much dependent on Jasprit Bumrah' He also pointed out India's overreliance on Jasprit Bumrah and urged Gill to include Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI for the second Test. 'They are too much dependent on Bumrah. It's not easy because you need more experienced bowlers, and they should play Kuldeep Yadav,' he said. The second Test is scheduled to begin on July 2, in Birmingham. The defeat in the first Test saw Gill become the sixth Indian Test skipper to begin his tenure with a loss. Recently, former India player Sanjay Manjrekar also criticised Gill's captaincy approach and pointed out his defensive fielding tactics. He also slammed Gill's personality and leadership style. 'Whether they would have taken wickets or not, Kohli would have made it clear to the opposition that he's actively trying to get them out. Gill doesn't have that kind of personality or leadership style. However, perhaps being a bit less defensive and not pre-empting things would have been better,' he said.

India's Record At Edgbaston: 7 Losses, 1 Draw; Eye First Test Win In Birmingham
Last Updated: India will play their second match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England at Edgbaston, where they have never won a Test. India's men's cricket team will play their second Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, where they have yet to secure a win. India trail 0-1 in the series, with the second Test match beginning on Wednesday. Indian fans and players are wary of their record at Edgbaston, where they have not won a match. Of the eight matches played, India has lost seven and drawn one. What is India's Record At Edgbaston? In their previous match at Edgbaston in July 2022, which was the rescheduled fifth Test of the 2021 series, India, under stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, looked strong until the fourth innings. Centuries from Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) took India to 416 from a precarious position of 98/5. With their pacers performing well, a defeat seemed likely for England as they slipped to 109/3 while chasing 378 runs, despite a century partnership between openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley. However, centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root left India searching for answers, as the hosts pulled off their highest-ever run chase in Tests. This showcased the effectiveness of their 'Bazball' approach under skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, resulting in a 2-2 series draw. During the 2018 tour, the spotlight was on Virat Kohli, who sought to redeem himself after past struggles in England. Criticised for his ability against the moving deliveries of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Kohli scored his first Test century in England, a brilliant 149, made mostly with the tail-enders. His passionate celebration marked a triumphant moment. Despite Kohli's efforts and the outstanding performance of bowlers like Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, India could not chase down 194, being bowled out for 162. England took a 1-0 lead in the series. The 2011 tour was particularly difficult for India. Alastair Cook's marathon 545-ball 294 overwhelmed the Indian bowlers, leading England to declare at 710/7, the highest Test total at Edgbaston. India suffered a crushing loss by an innings and 242 runs, and by then, had lost the series. Sachin Tendulkar's classy 122 in 1996 during an eight-wicket loss, and significant defeats by 132 runs in 1967 (where India was bowled out for 92), innings & 78 runs in 1974, and innings & 83 runs in 1979 are other notable memories. The innings defeats featured double centuries from David Lloyd and David Gower in 1974 and 1979, respectively, which troubled the Indian bowlers. When Did India Draw in Birmingham? India's sole draw at Edgbaston came in 1986, when both teams shook hands with India at 174/5, attempting a 236-run chase. India won the series 2-0 under Kapil Dev's captaincy, marking their best performance in England. However, it was a missed opportunity for a complete series whitewash, an achievement yet to be accomplished by any Indian skipper. First Published: June 29, 2025, 20:03 IST
