WREXHAM, Wales - Wrexham earned promotion for a record third straight season with a 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic in League One on Saturday, the latest chapter in a stunning rise under the ownership of Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Sam Smith struck twice after Ollie Rathbone opened the scoring to send the Red Dragons up to the Championship (second tier) next season in front of a jubilant Racecourse Ground crowd that included Canada's Reynolds and American McElhenney.
They are the first team ever to enjoy three successive promotions in the top five tiers of English football.
Phil Parkinson's side clinched second place with 89 points and one game remaining. Birmingham City, who top the League One table with 102 points, had already sealed promotion.
Wrexham dominated from the start and Rathbone put them ahead in the 15th minute when James McClean worked a short corner to the midfielder, who fired home from the edge of the box.
The home fans were still celebrating when Smith doubled the lead with a spectacular strike three minutes later.
Matty James chipped a long pass over Charlton's back line that Smith volleyed in with his left foot. Smith completed his brace in the 81st when he latched onto Max Cleworth's cross and fired just over the head of goalkeeper Will Mannion. REUTERS

PARIS - Jannik Sinner geared up for his French Open quarter-final on Wednesday by hitting with Lois Boisson and the world number one said he was unsurprised by the wildcard's dream run on home soil this year. Sinner continued his bid for a maiden Roland Garros title with an efficient 6-1 7-5 6-0 win over Kazakh Alexander Bublik shortly after world number 361 Boisson lit up Court Philippe Chatrier by stunning sixth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6(6) 6-3. The duo began their day by practising under the closed roof of the main showcourt and Sinner was left impressed by Boisson's unusual style for a woman. "The level she produces is amazing," Sinner told reporters. "Very consistent, claycourt style with the forehand and a lot of top-spin. Today it was raining, so I called the desk if there were some free spots, because I don't want to risk to go on court without warming up. So we arrived quite early. "She straightaway said yes and we hit some balls. It was a consistent warmup for a different game style for a woman because the ball is quite high and quite spinny. "Physically she's very strong. She deserves to be in the position where she is right now, and we wish her all the best for the future." Boisson, who knocked out world number three Jessica Pegula in the previous round, has become the toast of an adoring nation and will at least break into the world's top 70 next week. Her success comes a year after she suffered a serious knee injury a week before Roland Garros that denied her a Grand Slam debut. "It's amazing, no? I think that's exactly what France needs, something very new, very special, great mentality. She's someone who is quite calm on the court, at least she seems like it," Sinner said. "She had knee surgery not long ago, so even that, gives her some great confidence hopefully for her future. We actually were in the same centre for a little while back in the day, and we practised sometimes together even there. "I know her. I saw her before the tournament in the gym in Jean Bouin. We talked a little bit about how things are and she was happy. Having a wildcard here, it's a special tournament for her, being French." Messi role uncertain as Argentina coach monitors fitness ahead of Chile qualifier
BUENOS AIRES - Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said on Wednesday he had yet to decide whether captain Lionel Messi would start in their next World Cup qualifier against Chile, as he continues to closely monitor the 37-year-old's fitness. With their place at the 2026 World Cup already secured, Argentina, who lead the South American qualifying standings, travel to face bottom-placed Chile on Thursday without several regulars and with Messi's role uncertain. "We've been in contact (with Messi) recently. We haven't decided yet whether he'll play from the start or not. It would be good to know how he's feeling physically," Scaloni told reporters. French fairytale is over but ranking rise has just started, says Bublik PARIS - Alexander Bublik's excellent run at the French Open came to an end on Wednesday after his straight sets loss to top seed Jannik Sinner but the Kazakh said his rise back up the rankings had just begun. Bublik, who beat ninth seed Alex De Minaur in the second round and stunned fifth seed Jack Draper in the fourth to reach his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final, did not have a chance against the world number one, who won 6-1 7-5 6-0. For the 27-year-old Bublik, who had risen as high as 17th in the world in June 2024 and was a top-50 player between 2020-2024, this run was exactly the boost he needed. "It's the best clay court season I ever had, and it's a positive impact on my rankings," Bublik told a press conference. He is currently ranked 62nd but will move into 43rd spot next week when the next rankings are released. "I'm back in the top 50, I think where I belong. I do believe that this is just the start to try to climb back, you know, to the top 20." Bublik, known more for his phenomenal touch and trick shots and less for his work ethic compared to other top players, put in the hard yards during the clay court season, playing six events prior to the French Open, and it paid off. He has been candid about the need to balance the grind of tour life with family life and said he will not be setting the bar too high now. "I never had the goals to be a Grand Slam champion. I never had this," Bublik said. "Tennis for me is a journey. Tennis for me is a part of life, an important part of life, but quarter-final here, it's like achievements on the wall. That's another tick in the box. "As long as things are working, and if, for the next 10 years I will be a top-50, 60 player in the world, that's totally fine for me," he said.
