Guntur Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu instructs officials to tackle possible rain-related issues
In view of the India Meteorological Department's forecast of heavy rainfall, Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu on Saturday (May 31, 2025) directed officials to implement precautionary measures to prevent public inconvenience across the city.
The Commissioner announced that a 24/7 helpline (08632-345103) has been set up at the GMC Call Centre to receive complaints from citizens regarding rain-related issues. Special staff have been assigned to ensure round-the-clock response and coordination.

To avoid any disruption owing to rainfall, Commissioner Srinivasulu instructed GMC officials to work in close coordination. He urged residents to promptly report issues such as drinking water disruptions, water stagnation, fallen trees, or blocked roads to the helpline for immediate action.
Horticulture Department staff have been kept on standby to clear fallen trees and the Commissioner emphasised that complaints received through the call centre must be addressed without delay. In anticipation of potential power outages, he directed engineering officials to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply by arranging backup generators and coordinating with the Electricity Department.
Furthermore, he instructed the Chief Medical Health Officer (CMHO) to oversee timely removal of waste that accumulates at mesh filters where minor drains join main drains. Sanitation workers have been tasked with keeping these areas clear to prevent blockages.
Highlighting safety concerns due to high winds, the Commissioner also directed the City Planner to identify and immediately remove damaged hoardings and loose banners in various parts of the city.
Commissioner Srinivasulu reiterated that the municipal administration is fully prepared to handle any rain-related emergencies and appealed to the public to cooperate and make use of the GMC helpline for quick resolution of grievances. The city witnessed rain as expected on Friday (May 30, 2025), but there was no rain on Saturday till noon (May 31, 2025).

200 dead as Nigerian town submerged by floods, rescue efforts stalled
The death toll from devastating flooding in a market town in Nigeria's north-central state of Niger rose to at least 200 on Sunday, a local official said. Torrents of predawn rainfall early Thursday unleashed the devastating flood on Mokwa, nearly 380 km (236 miles) west of Abuja and a major trading and transportation hub where northern Nigerian farmers sell beans, onions and other food to traders from the south. The deputy chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Musa Kimboku, confirmed the updated fatality count to The Associated Press on Sunday. He said rescue operations have been called off, as authorities no longer believe there are any survivors. To prevent the outbreak of disease, officials are currently exhuming bodies buried beneath the rubble, Kimboku added. On Saturday, the spokesperson for the Niger State emergency service, Ibrahim Audu Husseini, said an additional 11 people were injured and more than 3,000 people were displaced. At least 500 households across three communities were affected by the sudden and intense flood that built rapidly in about five hours, leaving roofs barely visible and surviving residents waist-deep in water, trying to salvage what they could and rescue others. Husseini added that two roads were washed away and two bridges collapsed. In a statement on Friday night, President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences and said he had directed the activation of an emergency response to support victims and 'accelerate' recovery. Flooding is common during Nigeria's wet season. IMD issues red alert in Tripura; Over 10,000 shifted to safer locations amid torrential rainfall
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 1 (ANI): Over 10,000 people have been shifted to safer locations across Tripura as torrential monsoon rains battered the state over the past 48 hours, officials said on Sunday. Triggered by intense moisture incursion, the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has disrupted connectivity, inundated low-lying areas, and forced thousands into relief camps, even as authorities brace for more downpours in the coming days. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala, has issued a red alert across all districts of Tripura after incessant monsoon rains battered the state over the past 48 hours. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, intensified by strong moisture incursion, has severely disrupted connectivity and forced thousands into relief camps. In a release issued by the IMD, active monsoon conditions are forecasted to persist, with a high likelihood of further heavy rains today and tomorrow. In response, state authorities have mobilised rescue teams and activated emergency protocols. Bodhjung Nagar in West Tripura recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 198.5 mm, followed by Kailashahar in Unakoti (192.2 mm), Jirania in West Tripura (175.5 mm), and Agartala (140 mm). A total of 14 rescue teams--11 in West Tripura and 3 in Unakoti--comprising personnel from NDRF, SDRF, Assam Rifles, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Bharat Scouts, and Aapda Mitra volunteers have been deployed. Sixty relief camps have been established across West Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, and North Tripura, currently sheltering approximately 2,800 families and over 10,600 people. Numerous roads in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, and West Tripura were temporarily blocked due to landslides and fallen trees. Quick response units from SDRF, the Forest Department, and PWD have cleared many of the affected routes. Preliminary reports show that 201 houses have been damaged, with 92 severely and 109 partially damaged, mostly in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, and North Tripura. The Howrah River in Agartala reached 10.91 meters at 5 PM, crossing the danger level, although it has shown a receding trend over the past hour after remaining stagnant since morning. In Agartala city, stormwater drainage systems comprising 17 pump houses effectively cleared water stagnation within 2 to 3 hours despite high-intensity rainfall in a short period. Tripura Chief Minister, along with senior officials including the MP (Rajya Sabha), Mayor of Agartala, Revenue Secretary, DM and SP of West Tripura, visited several affected areas and relief camps including those at Chandrapur, Pratapgarh English Medium School, Vivekananda School, Pragati School, Tulsibati School, and B. R. Ambedkar School. Authorities have advised citizens to stay calm, avoid venturing near rivers and low-lying areas, and follow instructions from local administrations. The state government continues to work in close coordination with all departments to ensure relief, rehabilitation, and risk mitigation efforts are carried out efficiently and effectively. (ANI)
