India's PC market grows 13% in Q1 2025, tablet shipments slide amid market realignment

India's PC market (excluding tablets) recorded 13% year-on-year growth in Q1 2025, reaching 3.3 million units, according to the latest research from Canalys, now part of Omdia.
The growth was primarily fuelled by a robust 21% surge in notebook shipments, which hit 2.4 million units, while desktop shipments fell 3%, totaling 9,06,000 units.
Notebooks continue to serve as the backbone of India's digital transformation, driven by evolving hybrid work models and rising productivity needs across both consumer and business segments.
In contrast, tablet shipments fell sharply, declining 24% year-on-year to 1.03 million units, reflecting a market correction after pandemic-driven highs and delayed institutional demand.
Market Outlook
Looking ahead, the Indian PC market is expected to grow 6% in 2025, surpassing 15 million units. Tablet shipments, however, are forecasted to contract by 8%. Growth momentum is expected to pick up in 2026, driven by device refresh cycles and increasing demand for AI-ready infrastructure.
AI and Premium PCs Gaining Traction
AI-capable notebooks saw explosive growth of 253% year-on-year, albeit from a small base, as enterprises and consumers begin embracing AI as a core computing feature. Meanwhile, premium notebooks (priced above $1,000) posted 49% growth, reflecting rising demand for high-performance, multi-purpose devices.
'Enterprises increasingly view AI as a core feature, while consumers are turning to premium PCs for their multi-use value,' said Ashweej Aithal, senior analyst at Canalys.

Brihaspathi Tech raises $10M, bags MSRTC deal; ready for IPO

Brihaspathi Technologies Limited, a Hyderabad-based leader in AI-powered surveillance and security solutions, has raised $10 million in fresh funding from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and other strategic partners. The company also announced a major project win from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and confirmed plans to go public in the next financial year. The latest funding round will support the development of a 72,000 sq. ft. CCTV manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, expected to be operational by the end of the current fiscal. It will also facilitate the recruitment of over 400 new employees and bolster the company's mission to scale its 'Made-in-India' AI surveillance technologies. 'Our expansion is entering a transformative phase,' said Rajasekhar Papolu, Managing Director of Brihaspathi Technologies. 'This investment accelerates the rollout of our new manufacturing plant and positions us for substantial growth across domestic and global markets.' In a key milestone, Brihaspathi has been awarded a comprehensive AI-enabled CCTV surveillance project by MSRTC. The deployment will span the transport corporation's entire network, enhancing public safety infrastructure and reaffirming Brihaspathi's strong track record with government and institutional clients. The company has already deployed over 1.2 million CCTV cameras across India. Notable projects include surveillance for the Border Security Force (BSF), election monitoring for the Election Commission of India, AI-based classroom monitoring, and wildlife surveillance. A standout achievement was the deployment of 64,000 CCTV cameras across 19 states in a single day for NEET examination monitoring. Brihaspathi is targeting a 30 per cent revenue increase in FY 2025–26, fueled by growing demand for smart surveillance solutions across sectors such as education, public safety, and transport in both urban and rural areas. It is the first Indian company in the security surveillance space to attract FII participation—marking a strategic inflection point in the industry. The company plans to use proceeds from its upcoming IPO in FY 2026–27 to expand R&D, boost manufacturing capacity, and drive innovation in AI-integrated surveillance.

Tata Plans ₹500cr Trust for Families of Crash Victims

Tata Sons , the holding company of the Tata Group, has sought board approvals to set up a trust that will extend financial support to the families of the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. At an interim board meeting Thursday, chairman N Chandrasekaran apprised the board of the proposed trust structure, multiple sources told ET. Approvals have been sought for an estimated ₹500-crore allocation to the entity, said one of the sources cited above. Tata Sons had earlier considered setting up separate trusts — one for families of Indians and the other for foreign nationals who died in the crash. According to sources, the funds will be used for compensation payouts to the families of the 271 victims, medical care, and renovation of the affected medical school, where several facilities were gutted by the smouldering fuselage of the ill-fated aircraft that fell from the skies moments after take-off. The rest of the corpus will be earmarked for the long-term needs of the affected families. The trust, which is expected to be registered soon, will support both Indian citizens and foreign nationals, including several British passengers on board the flight. The initiative is being led by PB Balaji, group CFO of Tata Motors, who brings extensive experience in regulatory, financial, and corporate governance matters. The trust will also include individuals from outside the Tata Group to ensure robust governance and compliance, sources said. Tata Trusts is also likely to contribute to the fund. The board meeting was attended by Tata Trust nominees Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, and Vijay Singh. There are significant legal complexities related to claims from the crash, sources added. Tata Sons did not comment. PB Balaji is overseeing the framework and implementation of the trusts to ensure they remain compliant, transparent, and sensitive to the specific legal and cultural contexts of the affected families. The trust will be structured to provide sustained financial support to immediate family members, covering essentials such as children's education, healthcare, and daily living expenses. This goes beyond a one-time ex-gratia payment. The approach echoes the Tata Group's response to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, when a trust was set up to offer long-term financial and emotional support to employees and their families of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, operated by the Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company Ltd.

JSW Paints to buy Akzo Nobel India for Rs 9000 cr, announcement today

Mumbai: JSW Paints has agreed to acquire Akzo Nobel's India business, valuing the company at Rs 12,000 crore (approximately $1.1 billion). This will make the paint-maker the fourth-largest in the now highly competitive domestic paints market, said people in the know. Ending months of negotiations, JSW has agreed to pick up 75% stake in the Akzo Nobel India for Rs 9,000 crore, a 17.4% discount to Thurday price. A formal announcement is due before market opens today. ET in its May 26th edition was the first to report that JSW had agreed for the billion dollar acquisition – its largest so far and had entered in 'exclusive negotiations.' JSW and Akzo were not immediately available for comment. The company helmed by Parth Jindal – has trumped bids from a consortium of Indigo Paints and Advent International, and adhesive manufacturer Pidilite Industries , as it sought to fortify its presence in the industrial paints segment , where it will now be the second-largest after Kansai Nerolac India. Live Events Announcement of the acquisition will trigger an open offer for a 26% stake to be purchased from minority shareholders of the company. Depending on the success of the open offer – price will be in accordance to the Sebi formula based on Thursday closing price – JSW will buy proportionate shares from Akzo. It will not cross the 75% threshold, which means the Dutch company can potentially retain a small stake. On Thursday, Akzo Nobel shares closed at Rs Rs 3,213/share on BSE. Its current market capitalisation is Rs 14,632 crore, down 10.5% year to hitting a lifetime high of Rs 4,649/share in October last year, its shares have since seen correction, and are down nearly a third from their peak. Akzo Nobel India, which sells under the 'Dulux' brand in India, has completed seven decades of operations in the country, and currently has a market capitalisation of Rs 14,524 crore. Subdued demand conditions for the industry also weighed on the company's share prices as the sector saw annual demand fall for the first time in nearly three years amid higher competitive intensity. Akzo Nobel India has about a 7% market share in India currently. While JSW Paints, launched in 2019, was among the earliest conglomerates to foray in the paints sector, the company has not been able to garner substantial market share over the years. Five years after its launch, the company posted its first operating profit in fiscal 2024, on a revenue of Rs 2,000 crore. AkzoNobel had announced plans to review its business operations in the Indian subcontinent in October 2024. In February, Akzo Nobel India hived off and agreed to sell its powder coatings business—its most profitable stream that contributes 12-14% of sales--to its Dutch parents. That took the shine off the deal for several potential suitors The Aditya Birla Group's 'Birla Opus' meanwhile, commands a high single-digit market share in about a year since launching its operations in 2024. It is targeting a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore in three years of its operations. Currently pegged at around Rs 80,000 – Rs 90,000 crore, the Indian paint industry is expected to clock in a 10-12% growth in volumes over the next few years, led by an impetus on housing and higher discretionary incomes. As compared to paint companies which were stepping into the Indian market a few years back, the recent years have seen conglomerates enter the space.
