Huawei, SMIC struggle to advance chips to 5-nm level, MateBook shows: report

Huawei Technologies continues to face challenges in advancing to the 5-nanometre chip manufacturing process, an analysis of its latest laptop hardware shows, underscoring the impact of US sanctions on the Chinese telecoms equipment giant.
Canadian research firm TechInsights found that the newly launched MateBook Fold Ultimate Design laptop features Huawei's Kirin X90 system-on-a-chip (SoC), which is manufactured by China's
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) using its 7-nm process node, according to a report published last week.
The finding dampens speculation that Huawei had made the leap to SMIC's 5-nm process, for which production is difficult to scale because of US sanctions on the sale of the most advanced chipmaking equipment to Chinese fabrication plants. The report comes nearly two years after TechInsights identified that Huawei was using SMIC's 7-nm process for the Kirin chips in its latest smartphones, starting with the Mate 60 Pro.
Unveiled in May, the new MateBook Fold is Huawei's first laptop with a foldable display, aimed at competing with similar offerings from
Lenovo Group and HP. It runs on Huawei's proprietary HarmonyOS operating system, as the company pushes for self-reliance in both hardware and software.

Huawei's slow progress in securing 5-nm chips would mean the company is 'multiple generations behind' its US rivals such as
Apple , according to the report. Apple's M-series chips have been using
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) 3-nm process for the past two years.

[The content of this article has been produced by our advertising partner.] The Institute of Philanthropy (IoP) and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust have approved a donation of HK$150 million1 to support the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), with The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) as the strategic partner, in launching the three-year Nurturing Future InnoTech Talent Project. A launch ceremony for the project, which aims to nurture a pool of talented youngsters with a passion for innovation and technology (I&T), was held on 3 June at the China Soong Ching Ling Science and Technology Cultural Exchange Center in Beijing. Officiating guests included Li Bin, Chairperson of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation; Lester Huang, IoP Chairman and Trustee of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust; Shen Beili, Vice Chairperson of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation; Nong Rong, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council; Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, IoP Director and CEO of The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Zhang Jiming, Vice Chairperson of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation; and Kenneth Chen, President of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Unlike existing youth exchange programmes, participants will undergo a year-long systematic training journey co-created with leading industry and academic partners focusing on four key themes: artificial intelligence, aerospace and engineering technology, robotics and new energy. The training will have three intensity levels, incorporating activities such as exchange visits, master classes, I&T education toolkit workshops, guidance by Mainland industry experts and in-depth incubation bootcamps. It aims to progressively enhance participants' interest in I&T, equip them with the ability to apply I&T knowledge into solving real-world problems and identify talented students to participate in national and international exchanges and competitions, such as the Soong Ching Ling Award for Children's Invention.

At the turn of the century, global innovation followed a Western script. Silicon Valley dominated the world in innovation. Europe exported standards and governance. Asia, in contrast, was cast as the manufacturer, assembler and consumer. But the global innovation order is shifting. According to the latest Edelman Trust Barometer, change is under way not only in technical capability but also in public sentiment. In China, 72 per cent of people trust artificial intelligence (AI), compared to 32 per cent in the United States and 28 per cent in the United Kingdom. Similar patterns hold across India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand as developing Asian markets consistently outperform Western and developed peers on public trust in innovation. This matters as without trust, even the most advanced technologies stall. Where trust is high, adoption accelerates, institutional alignment strengthens and public-private collaboration deepens. This serves as a powerful catalyst, especially for a country like China, whose innovation strategy is tightly interwoven with national development goals and the self-sufficiency mission . These dynamics play out against a broader philosophical divergence in how innovation is governed. Broadly speaking, two models dominate the innovation landscape. The first is the 'permissionless' model, which gave Silicon Valley its mojo. It champions speed, risk-taking and deregulation, based on the belief that innovation should be free to develop without prior approval. Although this laissez-faire approach has produced some of the most valuable technology companies globally, recent years have also seen such companies face accusations of acting against the public's best interests, sparking debates on their influence and societal role.

The American economy has outperformed others by relying on a sort of secret, magic 'sauce', but Washington's tariff and immigration policies are threatening to shift the outlook, according to leading US scholars attending the 'Summer Davos' in China. At the gathering, formally known as the World Economic Forum's 16th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, they collectively took stock of the US economy and debated whether it would be China or the US that most advances the frontier of tech and innovation. In one discussion on Tuesday, panellists such as former World Trade Organization chief economist Robert Koopman and Harvard professor of government Graham Allison took a look back at the US from where they sat in Tianjin, and they discussed the outlook for potential developments in the face of Washington's policy changes. Explaining that America's special concoction has several important ingredients, experts speculated that the US might be ditching key components, and that China may be advancing more quickly. 'Sectors have been able to get the capital and the workers they need, and it drives productivity growth in the US. You add immigration to that … It creates a nice magic sauce,' Koopman said. That sauce also includes higher education, according to Paul Gruenwald, chief economist at S&P Global Ratings.
