Sethubandhanam: An exhibition that captures how art binds three generations of a family
'You can see, along with a few paintings from my series Sisterhood, there are also a few works that admire the architecture of Jaipur,' he adds.
His most recent works — an unfinished series — are also displayed at the exhibition. Drawing inspiration from Operation Sindoor, the series explores women and the cultural practice of wearing sindoor (vermillion). In the charcoal works, the sindoor stands out in bright red.
The other side of the hall is slightly muted — beautifully so. Resplendent with the flowing beauty of watercolours, Shalini's works are a nostalgic trip. Stories of childhood.
'My father always used to talk about Wadakkanchery in Thrissur. His stories were about the people, the serene life of those days, and the temple festival. I tried recreating them,' she smiles.
Memories are at the core of her works — her old family home (tharavadu) just before it was demolished, her aunts, her father's kalan kuda (crook-handle umbrella), the hills welcoming a roaring rain...
'That's what I love to paint — exploring the beauty and the melancholy of my memories, tales I heard, and the nature around us. However, I have also started experimenting nowadays,' she says, pointing to her most recent works — a bangle market, the familiar yet unfamiliar scene of a temple, and so on.
The exhibition is striking in its simplicity, be it the way the works are arranged or the way they were chosen. 'I wanted it to feel intimate, close to heart, just like a family. It's not a curated or elaborate show. But it's ours, created, selected and exhibited by us,' says Shalini.
And Sethubandhanam succeeds in that. 'It was our father who suggested holding this exhibition. In 2018, when we were all together at our home, he just expressed — why not? However, in 2020, my parents died within 19 days, putting a stop to all these plans. It was a hard time for us,' says Shalini.
None of the artists in the family, including Balasubramanian, ever learnt painting professionally. Everyone began their art journey purely out of interest, and continues out of passion.

Kapur's family and Shalini's family are close friends. She was introduced to them after her marriage to Sanjay Passi. 'He was somebody who was full of life. He was very enthusiastic about things he did, whether it was his business or playing polo.... He was somebody a lot of people looked up to as a role model,' says Shalini. Recalling her last interaction with Sunjay and Priya, Shalini revealed that they had congratulated her for the success of Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives. She added that they were happy to see her holding up for Delhi in the series. Talking about his untimely demise, as per certain reports, it is believed that Sunjay, who was playing Polo in the U.K., accidentally swallowed a bee. He was stung in the throat, which might have led to his sudden heart attack. He was immediately given medical assistance. However, despite efforts to revive him, he passed away. Sunjay Kapur is survived by his current wife, Priya Sachdev, and their son, Azarius Kapur. Priya and Sunjay met through common friends as they were both a part of Delhi's high-society circle. The couple had started dating while Kapur's divorce proceedings were going on with Karisma Kapoor. They finally got married in 2017 and welcomed their son in 2018.

Shalini Passi is left reeling in shock after learning of the sudden death of her close friend, Sunjay Kapur, who succumbed to a heart attack while playing polo. "The news of Sunjay's death is sad and shocking. It makes us realise the frivolity of our life and everything that we take so seriously... In a moment everything is gone,' Shalini tells us. Shalini reveals that she would often meet up with Sunjay and his wife Priya Sachdev whenever they were in Delhi. 'Sunjay's family and our family are close friends.... I have known him and his family since I got married. He was somebody who was full of life. He was very enthusiastic about things he did, whether it was his business or playing polo.... According to a report by India Today, he had a heart attack while playing polo and passed away in the UK. He was 53. Suhel Seth was one of the first ones to confirm the death. He posted a condolence message on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, 'Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur : he passed away earlier today in England: a terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues @sonacomstar …Om Shanti". Later, Vivek Vikram Singh, Managing Director & Group CEO at Sona Comstar, broke the silence on Sunjay's death on LinkedIn. He wrote, 'It is an extraordinarily painful duty for me to confirm that our Chairman, and my best friend in this world, Sunjay Kapur has passed away yesterday in the UK. Sunjay lived a remarkable life and was loved by all those who really knew him. While a formal statement from the company will follow, he was the closest thing to a brother I had in this world and the hole his demise has left in my life can never be filled. May God give his wife Priya, and all his four children strength in this difficult time. Om Shanti'. It is believed that Sunjoy swallowed a bee while playing polo. The bee reportedly stung him, which triggered a heart attack. However, more information about his death is awaited. His family is yet to release an official statement on the same. Sunjay was previously married to actor Karisma Kapoor. He got married to Karisma in 2003, and got divorced in 2016. He shares two kids – a daughter and a son – with Karisma. Sunjay later remarried Priya Sachdev, with whom he has a son. He was also co-parenting Priya's daughter Safira, from her previous marriage.
