Why Conference League final referee Peljto was banned for 6 matches this season
Irfan Peljto will referee the Europa Conference League final between Chelsea and Real Betis on Wednesday night after an eventful season so far.
Bosnia's top ref will become the first from his country to referee a major UEFA club competition final when he takes charge in Wroclaw, Poland.
The 40-year-old has been refereeing internationally since 2015 and he handled seven Champions League games this season, most notably the first leg of the quarter-final between Arsenal and Real Madrid.
However, this season he was also banned for six games in the Bosnian Premijer Liga thanks to a number of errors in a single game.
The clash between Zrinjski Mostar and Borac Banja Luka in September ended 1-1 but the referee's performance earned a scathing review from the powers that be.

A Bosnian FA statement pointed out three notable errors, explaining: 'In the 25th minute, the referee, although very well positioned and with a clear view of the incident, failed to recognise an obvious foul and award a penalty kick to FK Borac.
'In the 26th minute, the referee, although well positioned, failed to award a direct free kick for the away team after a clear foul which led to a goal for the home team
'In the 90th+5 minute, the referee failed to award a clear penalty kick for Zrinjski too.'
Both Peljto and the VAR officials for the game were suspended for six games in Bosnia and he did not referee a Premijer Liga game again until November 3.
The ban did not extend beyond Bosnia, though, as Peljto took charge of Champions League games and a UEFA Nations League match during that gap between Bosnian league games.
Speaking of his pride of being asked to officiate the final, he paid tribute to his assistants who he called the 'wings' to his 'engine' during a match.
'We are living a dream,' he told UEFA.com. 'To receive the call was very emotional. It's an honour not only for my career, but to bring the flag of my small country under the European spotlight is a very proud moment.
'It is also not just a moment for me but also for my team, Senad Ibrišimbegović and Davor Beljo.
'I am the engine, but these guys are my wings and we all have to work together to be successful.
'I hope it is also a moment for the future of referees in Bosnia and Herzegovina, that young referees have this positive perspective on refereeing, and that we have created a path for them. More Trending
'We will work hard and give everything we can on the night to make sure that it's a success. We will be completely focused, and afterwards it will be nice to reflect on a special occasion for all of us.'
Of the Chelsea vs Real Betis final he added: 'They are huge clubs with big histories, and of course a lot of supporters. They are two top teams with fantastic players, so we also need to be prepared.
'We always say that every match is like a final, no matter what, as if it will be the last in your career.
'As referees, we receive a lot of support from UEFA, with mental, tactical and physical preparation. There is a lot to understand about the approach of each team, and individual players, and these sides have two different styles.'

Bright posted a picture on Instagram on Thursday showing her left knee bandaged accompanied by the caption: 'Successful op. Road to recovery begins.' An update on Millie Bright. — (C)helsea FC Women 🏆🏆🏆 (@ChelseaFCW) June 5, 2025 The 31-year-old was the latest big name to rule herself out of Sarina Wiegman's squad, with Mary Earps and Fran Kirby both surprisingly calling time on their international careers. Win fans over and dismantle Celtic – Russell Martin has work to do at Rangers
The former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager takes over from Philippe Clement, who departed in February and was replaced by interim boss Barry Ferguson. The appointment of a new boss comes following the confirmation of the takeover by an American consortium of Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises while Kevin Thelwell recently officially joined the Light Blues from Everton as the new sporting director. It's all change at Ibrox and, here, the PA news agency looks at the in-tray awaiting Martin who has to quickly get his side ready for July's Champions League qualifiers. ✍️ Our new Head Coach, Russell Martin. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 There has been a mood of disgruntlement among many Rangers fans before and since the confirmation of Martin as the new man in the hotseat. Rangers supporters are unhappy with his performance in the Premier League, where he was sacked by Southampton after a horror start to the season, after bringing them up through the play-offs. There is the perception that Martin was too dogmatic in his possession-based style of play and paid the price in the English top flight. He is already under severe and unprecedented pressure to hit the ground running. There's plenty of work to be done to overhaul Rangers' squad which ended up trophyless last season, albeit reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Rangers confirmed the departures of Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun and Tom Lawrence with their contracts set to expire. Loanees Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Rafael Fernandes have also left the club while players like Robin Propper, Nedim Bajrami, Ben Davies, Kieran Dowall – the latter two who spent last season at loan at Birmingham – are expected to depart. Midfielder Lyall Cameron will arrive from Dundee but he will not be alone. Arguably, a new goalkeeper, right-back, left-back, two centre-backs, two wingers, a number 10 and a striker is required. Of course, much will depend on the style favoured by Martin and how much money is made available but the Light Blues will have a new look next season. Midfielder Nicolas Raskin is arguably the club's biggest asset following a terrific season during which he broke into the Belgium national side. The 24-year-old, who signed from Standard Liege in January 2023 for a reported fee of around £1.3million has two years left on his contract. Rangers fans remain disgruntled about players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos who were allowed to run down their deals and leave for nothing. Enigmatic Cyriel Dessers has often been a frustrating figure since signing from Cremonese in 2023 but ended up top scorer in the Premiership last season with 18 goals while he netted 29 times for Rangers in total, taking his tally over two seasons to 51. Rangers fans appear split on whether the Nigeria international, contracted to 2027, should stay or go. But how much would it cost to replace him with a striker who guarantees the same goal return? Martin may just have walked in the door but he will be expected to win silverware this season with Celtic dominating Scottish football. Rangers fans watched their Old Firm rivals clinch their 13th league title in 14 seasons – albeit the Light Blues had a better head-to-head in league games – and only a Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen on penalties denied the Hoops a sixth domestic treble in nine years. It will be down to Martin to change that direction of travel. 💙 — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 The appointment of Martin dragged on and Rangers are facing a race against time for next season. The Light Blues will have to go through three rounds of qualifying in order to reach the league phase of the Champions League, the first of which is July 22-23. Rangers return for pre-season training on June 23 and, somehow, Martin needs to assemble a squad to hit the ground running.

Eberechi Eze ‘trusting it will work out' over Crystal Palace's European hopes
Palace qualified for Europe for the first time in their history by winning the FA Cup last month, but their place is under threat because of UEFA rules surround multi-club ownership. John Textor holds a 43 per cent stake in Palace through his company Eagle Football and he is also the owner of French club Lyon, who qualified for the Europa League with a sixth-placed finish in Ligue 1. 😏 — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) May 19, 2025 A decision is expected soon and Eze, who is with England for their World Cup qualifier against Andorra and friendly with Senegal, is optimistic. 'I really hope that Palace do get the reward because of what it took to actually achieve that,' Eze told reporters. 'It would be a huge shame if that was not the case but I'm trusting that it will work out in the end. 'It should work itself out because there's players who have worked to be in this position. 'There are fans who have been with the team throughout the whole season and experienced everything.' Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah is backing Thomas Tuchel to bring a 'winning culture' to England. A week to remember for @TrevohChalobah ❤️ — England (@England) June 3, 2025 The 25-year-old defender has received his maiden call-up for Tuchel's squad, which is another slice of recognition by the German. Chalobah said: 'He's the one who gave me my Chelsea debut. 'It's been good moments shared with him. He's a very tough manager. And I think that's what us players need going into the World Cup next year, and obviously in these games, just to build us up. 'He's a very good coach. He wants to win. He's a winner, you know? And he's seen that Chelsea, he's won, and he wants to bring that same winning culture here.'
