Kabir Bedi on open marriage with first wife Protima, growing close to Parveen Babi: ‘Somebody has an affair, then someone else has an affair'

Veteran actor Kabir Bedi, who once made headlines for his unconventional open marriage with his first wife, Protima Gupta, recently opened up in an interview with Filmfare about how turbulent that relationship eventually became. 'See, when you talk about us having an open marriage, it's not like we married and we had an open marriage,' he said. 'We did try the traditional model for a long time. But at times, what happens is somebody has an affair, then someone else has an affair, and then the problem of outside relationships comes into the marriage. Egos take over, you become possessive, and what not. And the fact that it does upset you, despite you being an advocate of free love… The fact is, it's very hard for an open marriage to succeed.'
Kabir revealed that the decision to have an open marriage came only later, as an attempt to salvage what was already falling apart. 'In our case, it was adopted at the end of the marriage because there was no other way to keep the marriage together. We tried that, and it failed.' He also recalled a pivotal moment when Protima left him and the children to pursue a life in dance, moving abruptly to learn Odissi. 'All I could say was, 'If that's what your spirit tells you, then take that flight and go.'' Kabir added, 'I said I would look after the kids.' It was around that time that he grew closer to actress Parveen Babi, which further complicated matters. 'It became another upheaval as I left home, which was very difficult and painful. But it was inevitable, given the state of our marriage at that time, it wasn't just working.'

Kabir also spoke about the tensions between Protima and Parveen. 'Parveen was always bothered by Protima because she believed that Protima wanted to get back together with me, and she was very certain of that,' he said. 'So anything to do with meeting Protima caused terrible scenes. But I was like, I have to meet Protima. I cannot not meet her. I have children with her. I have to see the children. I have to talk to her about the children.'
He further clarified that Parveen did not take on a parental role. 'There were times, when we got together, Protima had to go out, and I had to look after the children. But it was not like Parveen looked after the children,' he said. 'Sure, the children would visit her and talk to her. But I wanted time alone with them as well. So it was a difficult situation, not easy to handle. But I dealt with it. In the middle of a career, dealing with emotions, dealing with the needs of the children, creates a huge strain, a huge pressure. But that's what we created, and that's what we had to live with and do.'

Parveen Babi banished Kabir Bedi a year before her death; Mahesh Bhatt saw her worst mood swings: ‘You also think I'm mad'

Late actor Parveen Babi's life story remains one of the most tragic tales to come out of the Hindi film industry. In a recent interaction, actor Kabir Bedi, who was in a brief relationship with Parveen, spoke about witnessing the early stages of her mental health struggles. He also recalled seeing Parveen just a year before her death in 2005. During an interaction with Filmfare, Kabir admitted that Parveen's biggest fear was people finding out about her mental health issues when she was the biggest star in the country, as she feared it would end her career. He said, 'This was her biggest fear that if people found out that she has any mental instability, the industry would stop taking her. Can you imagine from her point of view having so much beauty and talent and films being offered to you but trying to conceal your mental problem from everybody, because if you let them know, they will drop you like a hot potato.' Kabir Bedi revealed that he persuaded Parveen Babi to seek help while they were in London, but the actress refused to heed his advice. He recalled, 'I advised Parveen to see someone in London because there were best people to treat her there and also she was away from all this, but she wouldn't hear of it. She didn't like the pressure that I was putting on her and, at the same time, her film Amar Akbar Anthony in India became a huge hit. She decided to return to India and went on to do many more films, but battling through the most terrible problems all the while. About that period… Mahesh Bhatt would know more about it because he was with her.' For the unversed, Parveen Babi started dating filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt after she parted ways with Kabir Bedi. Talking about working with Parveen while being in a relationship with her, Kabir said, 'She was very professional our relationship never entered the set. She had mood swings but they weren't as bad as what Mahesh saw later on. Mahesh saw the worst of it.' After Parveen Babi and Kabir Bedi parted ways, the latter was villainised and blamed for their breakup, with many claiming it triggered Parveen's mental instability. Speaking about the same and why he didn't defend himself at that time, Kabir shared, 'I was demonised but I thought that I could either clear up the misunderstanding and make her look bad or just keep quiet and let her get the sympathy and get the roles so that she can reestablish herself and her career. I spoke about it five years later at the Filmfare.' The Kismat actor also recalled meeting Parveen just a year before her death. He shared, 'I met her a year before she passed away. She was laying beside the pool, sunning herself and she said, 'Oh, Kabir.' She was embarassed to see me, she had changed a lot. She told me, 'I'm fine but people think I'm mad.' I told her, 'You have made accusations against people and naturally they will have an opinion.' She looked at me and said, 'You also think I'm mad. You are one of them. I don't want to see you again. Please leave.' I wished her well and left. I was sorry to see her in that state. But she had a flat and she was looked after, she was working as an interior designer.'

This man made Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Kabir Bedi superstars, died in extreme poverty, name was..., Amitabh Bachchan was his... The Hindi film industry has given us numerous evergreen heroes, who have entertained us throughout their careers with impeccable work. However, how can one forget this man who played a pivotal part in building the careers of some of the most prominent stars including, Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Kabir Bedi, as well as, placing his faith in Amitabh Bachchan. We are talking about none other than the legendary producer, director, writer and actor OP Ralhan who made and starred in several hit movies from 1960s to 1980s. He initially started his career as an actor, but soon transitioned to making films like Phool Aur Patthar, Talash, Bande Haath, Hulchul and more. OP Ralhan introduced several new talents in his lifetime. His one of the biggest hits Phool Aur Patthar catapulted Dharmendra to success, because of his iconic shirtless scene in the movie. Following that, Dharmendra gained the title of Bollywood's He-Man, and began receiving opportunities from every leading banner. With Zeenat Aman too, the actress who became a star after Dev Anand's Hare Rama Hare Krishna, was launched by OP Ralhan in his film Hulchul . Kabir Bedi, who was too launched in the same film as Zeenat, once recalled some fond memories working with Ralhan. He revealed how he refused to share the script with him when he cast him as an actor. 'Arre, mujhe story puchega? Sharm nahi aati? Mane Dharmendra ko star banaya hai. Phool Aur Patthar dekhi hai? Mujhse story maangega? Sign kar. (You will ask me for a story? Don't you have any shame? I turned Dharmendra into a star. Have you seen Phool Aur Patthar? Just sign).' Kabir laughed and recalled. In the same conversation with Filmfare, Kabir recalled OP Ralhan going through a distressful financial time towards the end of his last days. Ralhan has been an instrumental figure in Amitabh Bachchan's career too. During those days, Big B was praised for his punctuality, as many superstars were popular for arriving late to work, which used to discourage filmmakers for signing them. One of the reasons why Amitabh Bachchan make sure to be on time at work was probably a lesson that he learnt when Ralhan 'screamed' at him in front of everyone. The filmmaker, who was very particular about timings, once cancelled the shoot because Big B arrived 30 minutes late. Bachchan once shared in his blog, 'Landed up half an hour late for the shoot at RK Studios for 'Bandhe Haath' .. OP Ralhan the director screamed reprimanded me and shut shop .. shoot cancelled and announced in the open to many listening on .. embarrassed beyond .. early lessons learnt.' After a prolonged illness, OP Ralhan passed away in 1999, from cardiac arrest at the age of 74.
