Unko Maui's bringing island-inspired burgers to Deco District
Unko Maui's, a food truck known for its island-inspired bites, is setting down roots with a new brick-and-mortar location in the Deco District.
The latest: The restaurant takes over the former Fredericksburg Road home of Deco Pizzeria, which closed last year.
The grand opening is from noon-8pm Saturday.
Dig in: The menu features unique burgers, including a twist on Loco Moco — a classic island dish — along with options featuring teriyaki chicken and pineapple.
It'll also have a dessert bar for guests to build custom ice cream orders.
The menu ranges from $5 for an a la carte burger to $13 for a burger, side and a drink.
The vibe: Guests can look forward to events like Aloha Fridays, complete with hula performances during the summer.
While the restaurant will be open until 1am, it will not serve alcohol.
"We really like to focus on creating a family-friendly environment," owner Mike Suarez tells Axios.
Zoom out: Unko Maui's is a companion restaurant of Maui's on Main, a popular downtown-adjacent spot that debuted exactly one year earlier.
What they're saying: Unko Maui's aims to strike a balance between quality and affordability.
"With prices on everything being so high now, we want to provide affordable meals so people leave full and happy," Suarez says.

This tucked-away restaurant, "That Indian Place", has excellent food and will adjust to your spice preferences. I ordered the butter chicken (mild) and the chicken sagwala (mild), along with some garlic naan bread. The local atmosphere and outdoor dining patio really made this place stand out as one of my favorite spots to eat throughout the whole trip. It sounds interesting, but trust me once you try it, you'll want to order it time and time again. The ocean views from this restaurant also set the scene for a nice meal. This laid-back, down-to-earth island provides numerous options for fresh, local seafood, including mahimahi, ahi tuna, and ono. The island also has many traditional Hawaiian plates to try. I highly recommend trying at least one classic Hawaiian dish, such as the Loco Moco, during your visit. You'll also find spam musubi almost everywhere, another classic food in Kauai. Exclusive: Google wants to help cities build AI strategies
Google is releasing a playbook on Friday to help mayors across the country adopt city-wide AI strategies, per an announcement shared exclusively with Axios. Why it matters: Cities are approaching the technology wildly differently and with varying levels of resources, interest and need. But the "AI divide" — like the "digital divide" that came before it with internet access — is projected to deepen tech access disparities. "Building Your City's AI Strategy," released in partnership with the United States Conference of Mayors, is meant to serve as a framework for mayors and other municipal leaders to assess and implement AI. What's inside: The guide has chapters on identifying staff to participate in an "AI workshop," conducting surveys on AI usage and needs, and drafting an AI strategy document. The survey asks questions like how staff are currently using AI tools and which areas of city services could use AI the most. The guide states that AI offers cities "significant advantages" and "can automate certain tasks while freeing up city staff for complex, human-centric work." What they're saying: "Whatever problem you've been dealing with that you've inherited from your predecessors, that you can't figure out the way to fix, AI is the once in a generation tool that gives you a shot at fixing it," Cris Turner, vice president of government affairs at Google, told Axios. By the numbers: 96% of 100 mayors across the globe surveyed by Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2023 said they were interested in using generative AI, but only 2% surveyed were actively implementing it and 69% said they were exploring it. The bottom line: Companies like Google depend on people using their generative AI products for profit. But more users help the models get better, Turner noted.

Churchill's Pub not reopening yet despite online buzz
This week has been an emotional roller coaster for fans of Churchill's Pub, who were led to believe the long-shuttered dive bar was reopening this weekend after a five-year closure. It's not — but a rep for the new owner tells Axios they'll have more to say when reopening "details are finalized." Why it matters: As more of Miami's classic spots close down, the return of Churchill's would mark a rare reversal of fortune for locals who miss the old Miami. Yes, but: Little is known about the new owner, who bought Churchill's in a forced sale last year amid foreclosure lawsuits, or his plans for the Little Haiti bar. Zoom in: The buzz around a potential reopening began Tuesday, when a local music promoter made a surprise announcement on Instagram about a " grand reopening party" Saturday. Some fans couldn't believe it, with one commenting, "Is this a joke?" "Wutttt," Miami electro-pop group Afrobeta commented. "No joke," promoter Dig Under Rock replied. Artists mentioned in the concert flyer were also promoting the show online Wednesday. Plans soon changed when Dig Under Rock announced a "change of venue" to The Club in North Miami. "Don't shoot the messenger," said the Instagram. Friction point: The switch led to frustration and bemusement from jaded Churchill's fans, who may remember when the pub's Instagram page tricked some into thinking it was being turned into a Chili's. "Did you guys just troll the reopening of [Churchill's] for publicity? Even though it kinda stings, hats off to you, all publicity is good publicity," the lead singer of local metal band Prophets Of The Dark Side commented. "Corny," another comment read. What they're saying: In a statement to Axios, Dig Under Rock said the concert "was originally booked at Churchill's but Churchill's isn't quite ready to reopen .... Churchill's will hopefully reopen in a couple of weeks." David Siqueiros, the communications director for Churchill's, confirmed to Axios Saturday isn't the day. "We truly appreciate the passion and enthusiasm from the Churchill's community — it's a testament to how much this place means to so many," he said. Siqueiros told Axios fans can sign up for updates at which currently states "We are back!" and "Opening soon." Flashback: Churchill's, which first opened in 1979, closed in 2020 and has been embroiled in legal disputes among its previous owners, the bar's ex-manager and lenders.
