Santander issues urgent WhatsApp warning to all customers
Between 2023 and 2025, UK victims lost £226,744 to these scams, according to Action Fraud.
The latest scam, which has been doing the rounds for some time, is an impersonation scam.
Impersonation scammers do not always pose as children – sometimes they pretend to be friends, and sometimes they claim to be parents.

'Hi mum,' the first message starts, 'I've lost my phone.' Chris Ainsley, Santander head of fraud risk management, says the scams are evolving at 'breakneck speed'.
He says: 'We're hearing of instances where AI voice impersonation technology is being used to create WhatsApp and SMS voice notes, making the scam seem ever more realistic.' Scam texts can be forwarded to 7726, and WhatsApp messages can be reported via the app.
Experts advise verifying requests for money by contacting the supposed sender directly via a known phone number, and to avoid transferring money to unfamiliar accounts.
Hannah Bingle, Yorkshire Building Society Financial Crime Awareness Specialist, explains what to do if you receive a 'hi mum' message. Hannah says: "Scams where the sender pretends to be a loved one can be really unsettling.

"If you receive a message claiming to be someone you know using a new number, don't take it at face value. Try to call them on their existing number – you can quickly find out if the real person knows about the messages.
"If you're still not sure, you can ask something the genuine person would know but a scammer couldn't guess. Something simple like where you last met, the name of a pet or someone you both know.
"Don't be rushed into sending anything. A real family member or friend wouldn't mind you checking their details before handing over your money or information."

Boy, 15, in court charged with attempted murder after teen 'stabbed' in Glasgow
The youngster appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court today. A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after another teenager the same age was found seriously injured in Glasgow. The alleged victim was found seriously injured in Glasgow last Friday. The 15-year-old was found hurt in Denbeck Street, in the city's Shettleston area, at around 10.30pm on May 29, 2025. He was taken to the city's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and has since been discharged. The 15-year-old suspect was charged with attempted murder when he appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday. The boy from Glasgow, who cannot be named for legal reasons, did not enter a plea. The case against him was continued for prosecutors to investigate further and he was released on bail. Emergency services raced to the alleged stabbing and the teen was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to serious injuries. He has since been discharged. Investigations established that four individuals, all dressed in dark clothing, were seen fleeing the area and heading towards Shettleston Road and then onto Wellshot Road.

Lockerbie bombing suspect trial delayed until next year
The case is now scheduled for next April. The trial of the man accused of making the Lockerbie bomb - the worst terrorist attack in UK history - has been delayed. Abu Agila Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi was due to go on trial last month. But the case against the pensioner, who is known as Masud, was postponed due to how complex it is, and his poor health. It is now scheduled to go ahead in April next year. The new date for the case, which is to take place before a jury in Washington, was chosen at the request of the defence and prosecution teams lined up to conduct the trial. The BBC reports Masud has denied priming the explosive device which brought down Pan Am flight 103 on 21 December 1988, killing 270 people. The explosion killed 259 passengers and crew and a further 11 people in the Dumfries and Galloway town when wreckage of the Boeing 747 fell on their homes. It remains the deadliest terror attack in the history of the United Kingdom. Masud, who is in his early 70s, is described as a joint citizen of Libya and Tunisia. In a joint status report to the US district court for the District of Columbia last month, both parties referred to the "complex, international nature" of evidence in the case, adding that a pre-trial schedule would be "atypical". Lawyers also requested an early deadline for motions to "suppress the defendant's statement," presumed to be an alleged confession Masud made while in jail in Libya in 2012. The claim, which is said to be of "importance to the [US] government's case," alleges that Masud admitted working for the Libyan intelligence service and confessed to building the device which brought down the aircraft. It is also alleged he named two accomplices, Abdelbasset Al Megrahi and Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah. Megrahi was convicted of murdering the 270 victims and died in Tripoli in 2012 after being freed on compassionate grounds by the Scottish government. Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah, his co-accused in the trial at the Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands, was found not guilty. Scottish and US prosecutors first named Masud as a suspect in the case in 2015 following the collapse of the Gaddafi regime in Libya. He was charged five years later by then-US attorney general William Barr with the destruction of an aircraft resulting in death. Masud was taken into US custody in 2022 after being removed from his home by an armed militia.

Five arrested after police swarm industrial building over 'possible cannabis cultivation'
The men were aged between 17 and 50 years old. Five men have been arrested after police swarmed on an industrial building in Greenock earlier today. Officers from Police Scotland received a report of a "possible cannabis cultivation" at the former tobacco warehouse on the corner of Clarence Street and Hood Street in the Inverclyde town. Multiple police vehicles arrived at the scene at around 11.15am on Thursday, June 5. The men, aged 17, 23, 26, 38 and 50 were later arrested. Enquiries into the incident are still ongoing. It is not yet known whether drugs were recovered from the premises. Images from the scene show police vans and cars parked along the street, with Clarence Street seemingly closed off by a police car blocking the road at each end. Several uniformed officers were seen standing guard outside the building and speaking to locals. A charity based in the building, RIG Arts, commented on a social media post on the incident reassuring people they were not affected. They said: "RIG Arts remained open during the situation in the building today and we will be operating as usual. There is a police presence at the Tobacco Warehouse but this is not related to our studio.
