Pet owner drags dog chained to mototcycle
SUNGAI PETANI: A pet owner is believed to have cruelly chained a dog to his motorcycle and dragged it to get rid of it, on grounds that he no longer wanted to keep the animal after four months.
In the outrageous incident in Bandar Puteri Jaya near here yesterday evening, the man's inhumane act was stopped by another man who witnessed the cruelty. Additionally, a woman recorded the incident and later uploaded the footage on social media site Facebook.
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said his department had received a police report regarding the incident.
'Initial investigations found that the dog was not dead but injured, and it was sent to an animal clinic for treatment.
'We have opened an investigation under Section 428 of the Penal Code (maiming an animal) and we are also referring this case to the veterinary office,' he said in a media statement today.
He added that efforts are being made to identify the suspect who will be detained to assist in the investigation for an act of cruelty to animals.

KUALA MUDA: Police have arrested the elderly man seen dragging a dog behind his motorcycle in a video that recently went viral on social media. The 82-year-old suspect was detained in front of a house in Bandar Puteri Jaya, Sungai Petani, at 8pm on Sunday and brought to the police station for further investigation. Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said preliminary investigations found that the man suffers from dementia and admitted to dragging his own pet dog . "However, the elderly man could not recall why he did so," he said in a statement yesterday. Hanyan said the suspect only became aware of his actions after being stopped by the public during the incident. Police have seized the man's motorcycle and a white helmet as evidence. The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming an animal. If convicted, the offence carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both. Police also confirmed that the dog, which sustained injuries, was taken to a veterinary clinic by the social media user who uploaded the video and is currently receiving treatment. The dog will be handed over to the Veterinary Services Department once treatment is completed. Hanyan said the suspect, who has no criminal record and tested negative for drugs, has been released on police bail due to his age and medical condition. Investigations are ongoing. It was reported that a 48-second video showed bystanders confronting the elderly man, who was seen dragging the dog chained to his motorcycle.

Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added.
